Krylon Paint Job

Hello everyone!

I'm looking to do a krylon spray paint job on my AR15, and just had a few questions.

First, I'll be painting the barrel, I don't see that being a problem but how will that hold up to the heat, if I do some rapid firing or something on the range? I'm sure it will be fine but just curious.

Second, is there anything really important I need to make sure is sealed off from the paint, I know the magwell and obviously close the dust cover, and tape the flash hider. But anything else? The little pin holes on some parts of the lower like where the forward assist is?

And last, I have an eotech and I'm still deciding on how to cover the lenses. The only thing I can really think of is just putting masking tape over the lenses, I just wanted to be sure it will not get through on the glass some how. Anyone have any tips or techniques on that?

Also I am still deciding on colors! Feel free post pics of personal pieces plz! And colors used and in which order

I can use all the tips I can get!
Thanks!

Re: Krylon Paint Job

Degrease with acetone, if you want, I didn't, mine's still hanging on. Insert a mag, close the dust cover, stuff a cotton ball or ear plug in the end of the bore and spray, don't spray directly up into the FCG, incidental spray won't effect anything. Mask you Eotech lenses, use a couple layers if you're worried, if any gets thru acetone will remove it. If you get paint towards the chamber end of the barrel it will discolor from heat, and it will probably smoke a little the first couple times, its under the handgaurds and doesn't matter, the muzzle end is not likely to get that hot. I didn't do anything special on mine. There's a bunch of threads on here to give you motivation.

Re: Krylon Paint Job

Noveske N6 painted yesterday, no prep other than wiping the outside of the receiver with the bottom of the dirty t-shirt I had on. Sprayed a solid coat of Khaki, misted black and green over it. Tuned out just fine.

Brownells Alumihide on this one, I like the Krylon better.

Thanks for the info beef

And I love the .308 robbf. I want mine to look like that.

Re: Krylon Paint Job

I wipe everything down with alcohol to remove oil, solvents, and any other counter productive film. Your paint will bubble and strip if not prepped properly. Multiple light coats over heavy coats are best. I also use a flat clear on parts that will not see heat but will see wear. Again multiple light coats. It can and will be very durable but will wear. The reason I like to paint everything is because when it comes time to change colors for the enviroment I'm in. I don't buy me gear to look at and admire. My weapons are used as weapons not safe queens. Like many guys here, I maintain them but drive them hard.

Re: Krylon Paint Job

Like what everyone else said:

Plug the bore. Use blue painter's tape to cover the parts you don't want painted--i.e. the optics. Insert a mag.

I used a dark base--of alternating green and brown (I think a lighter green would have contrasted better). Then I used a net and finished with a dusting of tan.

The paint won't burn off, even if the barrel gets really hot. I have noticed CLP may make the paint gummy and come off, though.

Good luck.

Re: Krylon Paint Job

Can you use acetone to take of previous coats of paint? I mean will it do a good job if it's within 24 hours? I'd like to redo my rifle bc I did not prep with acetone and I'd like put down a heavier base coat

Re: Krylon Paint Job

When I painted my AR I just closed the dust cover put a mag in and taped of the lenses of the scope and started painting.

Take the batteries out and use generic heavy duty pain stripper. Krylon comes off in sheets of smooth parts (for the most part) and the paint in between pic rails and other places is easily removed with a brush

Re: Krylon Paint Job

Step A:
Sprayed brake cleaner, and wiped everything down. Closed the dust cover, taped up the magwell. Stuffed cotton balls in the end of my scope, then closed the covers.

Step B: applied paint

Re: Krylon Paint Job

Man, I love spray painted guns. It kinda says IDGAF & I'm not a pu$$y. In the past, I have used rubbing alcohol or carb cleaner to strip/clean (if at all) then sprayed after taping over anything I didnt want paint on. There are some oil based spray paints out there & I prefer those. In the end, nothing is a big deal with spray paint because changes or touch ups are a rattle can away.

Re: Krylon Paint Job

I know exactly why you mean man. Hy spend 200 bucks for a pro to do it when you can spend 15 and get it done and still be able to make repairs and touch ups, or stipe it off and do it again. I like the beat up look they get after a while too. That's why I prefer spraypaint

Re: Krylon Paint Job

I think it's better to paint the gun yourself. That way you can change it easier than a more permanent baked on finish.

Krylon works great and holds up well. No problem with barrel heat.

When I mask the lens on the scope, I cover them with cotton balls first, then use masking tape. That way if the tape gets loose or there is a small opening, the cotton balls will protect the lens from paint. On some scopes I use cotton balls and just close the Butler Creek lens cap and then paint. Never got paint on the lens.

Re: Krylon Paint Job

Do it yourself! Make it your own, it's cool to see the contrast of your own paint job next to other guy's.

Like said before, use acetone to clean off surface oil, use painters tape to cover anything you don't want painted (i covered my muzzle, magwell, trigger, under dust cover, scope turrets and under scope lens caps). I used Rustoleum Flat Black, Olive Drab/Green, and Khaki; $6/can at WallyWorld.

Here's my step by step:

With surfaces prepped and tape applied, ready for paint:

Next, sprayed on a few base coats of the Olive color:

For the first pattern, I cut some leafy branches off my tree, wove them together and zip-tied to have a stencil. Then I sprayed through the stencil with Khaki:

Last, I put a light mesh pattern with the Flat Black to even out all the colors. I used the plastic mesh sleeve you get when you order a new barrel:

To be honest with you, there's a hundred ways to skin this one. All above are nice looking guns, DIY garage jobs. Good luck!

Re: Krylon Paint Job

ear plugs work great for the muzzle.
and everything else that was said above. plus rubber gloves so when you touch it after prep it does not get oily from sweat.

Re: Krylon Paint Job

I stuff cotton balls, or cleaning patches over the lenses, then put masking or duct tape on top of that. The tape has always done it's job, but having something between the lens and tape makes me feel better.

Preventing anything from getting on the lens is far better than using acetone on a lens, as the acetone may remove any coating that the manufacturer puts on the lens.

Re: Krylon Paint Job

take the hood off the Eo-Tech with the 4 torx head screws and then wrap tape over the lenses, then put the hood back on and paint to your hearts content

Sick paintjob! What colors did you use for this pattern?

Re: Krylon Paint Job

Inspired by the rifles in this forum, does anyone know where I can buy Krylon Camouflage paint in the Portland, Oregon area?

Re: Krylon Paint Job

For anyone having the same problem. I only visited one Walmart in Portland (they do not carry spray paint at all!)

Home Depot does not have it, and requires ID in Portland to buy spray paint.

Do it Best, Portland does not have it but they can order it! They also have to lock up all their paints as per Portland law.

Auto Zone does not have it and also locks it spray paint up.

I did finally find Krylon camouflage at O'Reilly's Auto Parts, Portland, OR.

If you don't mind me asking, what stencil/sponge/pattern did you use for this? It looks great!

Thanks

Here is a write up I posted on another board about my how to.
PS. The orange on door on the ubr stock is not paint, but red carolina clay from a wet 2 day carbine class.

Here is an easy how to "camo your ________ using the sponge method"

I had a <span style="font-weight: bold">Wilson Combat TR </span>(<span style="font-style: italic">I've got $$$$$ to burn</span>)I've been eyeing for a while for a camo paint job. I decided today was the day

Here are the paints that were used during the painting WC-TR. They were picked up at the local Lowes Hardware, but can be found any place fine graffitii consumables are purchased.
6817739767_d987ea2447_z.jpg

The sponges I used came from Hobby Lobby. Lowes has them, but they are twice the cost, and come with half as many in the package.
Any crafting supply shop will have these. Mine cost $5.99.
6817739039_b45fa877fd_z.jpg

Before you paint your weapon, make sure the oil/grease is removed, as any painted over will come right back off. I suggest a run to your auto parts store and picking up non-chlorronated brake cleaner. The cheaper, the better. Do not use Carb cleaner as it contains a lubricant.

I started out by laying a base over the entire weapon in Rustoleum Khaki. It's shiny where it is wet. Once it cures, it will turn flat like the cans stated.
6817738117_5a74f79491_z.jpg

Using a paper plate(or fine china if you are a baller)spray your next paint of choice. I prefer to mix the darker colors and then go lighter. Keep in mind the color black in a natural enviroment is pretty rare. Just look in the woods for yorself. I prefer to use a brown, or green and then add black to it to get the grade of color I am looking for.
6817741267_c16720202c_z.jpg

The apply to the rifle. Again the image shows the paint shinny as it has not cured yet.
6817740639_6b8aee5e87_z.jpg

Once I get my darker layer down, I start mixing up the lighter colors to be added.

It doesn't get more tactical than a camo'd tennis racquet

Re: Krylon Paint Job

I like the idea of the sponge. If the gun original color is okay to use as base with the sponge easy to apply layers of different colors, giving natural appearance.
