Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

I've made an app called "Hide on the Range" that works with Chuck's IOTA (which is a scope attachment that lets you focus on a close distance - 10' or so). It simulates targets being at range precisely enough that it can be used to practice mil-dot ranging as well as just for dry fire. It does this by using the size of the screen and the distance of the screen from your eye.

It also has a timed dot drill based on lowlight's drill here on the hide.

It runs both in a web browser and on iOS devices, though I'm not putting it on the app store. I will be distributing it adhoc for testing however, the info is on my site. It's beta software.

I only took up long range shooting last year, and reading the hide plus signing up for the online training has made a huge difference in my shooting and my knowledge. I wanted to try to contribute something back so the app is free and will stay free. Hopefully some of you will find it useful.

I'm open to ideas, in the future I plan to add movers and maybe a bit of a situational simulation.

My site is misterouchie.com, go there to try the app. I also have some other stuff up related to mil-dot ranging.

The thread on Chuck's IOTA is here.

So we use this with our IOTA? Sweet!

I'll try to download this tommorow! Great idea!

The software I use supports it and I think it's a simple process, but I don't have an android device. If I get one or can borrow one then I'd definitely look into it.

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

I am not sure what I am doing wrong but I can't get the app to load.

Because of how I'm distributing it I have to add new people manually. I added today's folks you should be able to install it now.

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

I can look into developing it for android if you want. Pm me if interested.

How do I get added to the list so I can download it?

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

very cool.... just took a brief tour.... I will be using this and testing my ranging skills later this afternoon ... that will save me from the heat.

Thanks again

hah, I hear that. I was out shooting yesterday and absolutely dripping from the heat.

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

just signed up to testflight. going to install the android version on my A500 here shortly.

The display on the A500 is considerably sharper than my iPhone 3Gs so it should yield better results through the IOTA.

I just put up a new Android build that has auto-rotate enabled, that should take care of it. Does it run okay otherwise?

It runs smooth, but I have not gotten a chance to actually range estimate with it, so I can't comment on how accurate it is yet.

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

Just picked it up. Is running pretty smoothly on my iPhone 4s. Will return and repost if I can find anything else...

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

here is an issue that I've come across, and I don't know if its the program of my iPhone, but when I set it down in front of my rifle to start training, the phone will go to sleep after a minute or so. I know there must be a way to keep this from happening as movies and youtube clips don't allow the screen to time out when they are playing, I just don't know if it is something that can be fixed at the end-user level or if it is something that needs to be put into the programming.

I'll look into it and put up a new build when I get it sorted. Until then, you should be able to go into Settings/General/Auto-Lock and set it to 15 minutes or never to keep your iPhone from going to sleep.

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

I've had this for a couple of weeks and finally got at chance to play with it tonight. Great job putting this together. The timed dot drills are a real challenge. This is something that I couldn't do well by myself. Thanks for doing this. I see improvement in my future.

Cheers

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

i found one issue on the droid platform using a droid razr maxx

when ever i am in a drill or ukd i can not use the back button on screen or the phones to exit. the only way to revert back to the main screen of the app is by pressing the home key, then killing the app and re launching

other than that i think this app has some great potential its really neat with Chucks iota..

and i have a request if possible can you make an option to make the app be MOA instead of MILS

thanks for the cool app

Thanks for the bug report, I still don't have an Android device myself so I can't test it. Does the button seem to respond to a press but then does nothing, or is it like it's not getting pressed at all? Does the back button not work on the settings screen as well?

Has anyone else had the same problem?

MOA should be doable! I'll probably have time next week to work on it.

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

For some reason I am not able to get the web version to work on either FireFox or IE. I am running the latest version of both and installed the Unity Web Player. When I go to Unity their demos work fine.

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

hmm, I'll look into that. In the meantime if you want an exe build that you can just run on your PC let me know.

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

Darn, I thought things would be easy! Alright, I'll work on it and get back to you.

oh - make sure you clear your web cache so that the latest version gets loaded.

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

I forgot to include the data directory with the windows build (ug). Tested it and it's working on my Windows 7 machine:
http://misterouchie.com/hide-on-the-range.zip

With the webplayer it's just a embedding issue with the Wordpress plugin, haven't worked it out yet, however having it on its own page seems to works fine:
http://misterouchie.com/hide-on-the-range.html

edit: Okay the web browser version should be working in the original blog post now.

Worked for me in Firefox and IE just now. Looking forward to giving this a go. Also just signed up for flighttestapp.

Thanks for checking it out! You should be able to install the app on your iOS device now. I'm curious about how it works on a 5 and iOS 6...

Worked in Win7 and Firefox.

Thank you

Re: Hide on the range app for use with Chuck's IOTA

Ok. I'm a tool. Is this app ONLY or imobile devices iphone or will it work on my Mac laptop? I downloaded to my laptop. I think. And I'm getting nothing.

Unless I ended up downloading a SDK environment called Testflight? That wasn't my goal at all.

You should be able to run it in your browser via the Unity plugin. When you look at the page on the might it should prompt you to download and install it if you don't have it.

But I'll make a mac build for you that you can just run, hold on. : )
