Issues after bedding

So I've been reading on here for quite some time, but this is my first post so go easy on me. I recently bedding my .308 r700 and am very happy with it. However, I noticed that now the bolt will cycle even with the safety on (still has the X-Mark pro). I'm not sure if this is a necessarily a bad thing (the safety still prevents the bolt from firing when the safety is on) but I'm wondering if maybe something happened when i reinstalled the trigger or if it has to do with the bedding. Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Issues after bedding

Great thank you. Yeah I've got a few old remington hunting rifles that have the bolt lock and had this rifle apart for so long that I had forgotten whether or not it would cycle. Thanks very much for the help!

Re: Issues after bedding

yeah no kidding, was that a relief. New question, how do I know if I need longer action screws? The old ones still engage the threads but not to the extent they did before bedding. Should I just get longer action screws to be safe?

Re: Issues after bedding

A couple threads is all you need for proper holding power. If you get longer screws, after installation make sure you check your action to make sure they don't impede it's function. If they do, you'll have to grind them down a little...and you'll probably be right back where you started. Good luck.

Re: Issues after bedding

The current standard is the threads need to engage at a min depth equal to the diameter of the fastner.

Re: Issues after bedding

The two screws I just pulled out of my R700's action (stock bottom metal and hogue stock) were 2 different lengths, I can measure them for you in the morning if no one gets back to you with the lengths.

Re: Issues after bedding

Well I know the length of my action screws, I'm just wondering how far the threads need to engage in the action. I just bedded my action so it sits a little higher than it used to

Re: Issues after bedding

After bedding my R700 the stock screws would engage 2 full turns but thats it. For piece of mind I ordered the longer replacement screws available through Brownells. You will have to cut those down & grind them to the length you need but as long as you have a dremel it is really easy. It beats worrying about it every time you go to the range.

Re: Issues after bedding

Yeah I think that's what I'm going to do just to be safe. How did you measure to cut the front screw since it is hidden by the action?

Re: Issues after bedding

The way I do it is to install the bolt and then screw in your new action screw until it just touches the bolt lug. Remove the bolt and screw the action screw the rest of the way in while counting how many rotations. The number of rotations beyond touching the bolt lugs is the amount of threads I cut off.
