Re: 16-18 inch shorty rifles

Lots of great ideas here. My short rifles are AR's but I can see one of those 18" 308's happening.

Re: 16-18 inch shorty rifles

Thought I would share.......my Model 7 in 308. Sporting a 700 vls bbl I purchased off of a fellow hide member and had shortened to 16", rethreaded for can, and set back for a tight chamber. B&C ultra light stock and Nikon M-223 glass. She is holding MOA thru 400 so far with loads previously developed for my LTR. Happy to say the least. I really hoped she would weigh in lighter than 10.4 all up, but as usual I was wrong...

Re: 16-18 inch shorty rifles

This has been one of my favorite threads to check out since I joined. I will have one to post in here in the near future. Mine is at Accurate Ordnance getting chopped and threaded now. Will be a 18" Rem700 308 in a Manners T5 with Mini Chassis. Look forward to getting it back, heavy fingering then shooting. Can't wait

I am putting together a 16" build and this is pretty much exactly what I'm going for. Is it 16" or 18"? and what are the specs? Either way, it looks great...Well done!!!

It looks like an MPI but I'm not sure. I have an MPI custom tactical stock for an R700 long action that looks pretty much Identical but so many stock manufacturers are building forends with that same basic footprint, it's hard to tell

Re: 16-18 inch shorty rifles

JerseyMike,

If your going with the 178 bthp's try McCourt Munitions. He loaded some for my 17.5" Surgeon and they run 2560-2580 out of my gun. They are very accurate and I made a first round hit just the other day at 775 yards on a 11"x12" plate.

I love your build, it's very similar to mine. I went with an M24 profile though but I'm switching to a 6.5 Creedmoor and medium Palma barrel.
Is you stock inletted for an m24/m40 contour. It doesn't look bad at all, Im looking just to see what mine will look like when I go from my m24 contour to the medium palma.

Pusher,

I just loaded up some 178s and 175smks, both shoot equally well with both bullets less than a half min at 100Y. First time i shot it i had flyers in all my groups, a closer inspection revealed the top of the barrel was striking the bottom of the EFR dur to barrel whip. Took a file to it and now it shoots freakin perfect. First round hit on a shoot n see at 300 y, 10 inch plate at 400 and 480. Ive got the 178s going 2560 with 43.5 of varget with no pressure at all. Yup the channel was for an m40 contour

Re: 16-18 inch shorty rifles

Just finished this up - still haven't shot it since I cerakoted it a few days ago.

2012-07-21214139.jpg

-Rem 700P .308 rebarreled and cut to 18" by Southern Precision Rifles (they were a pleasure to work with).
-McRee chassis (using both AICS and Alpha mags)
-Nightforce 3.5-15x50 mil/mil HS ZS MLR
-Harris 9-13 swivel leg notch
-TIS quick cuff QR

This is the first time I've had a .308 this short. I've got a few brakes to try out to see if the recoil reduction is worth the noise. Hoping to get a suppressor for it if I can swing it (seems to be a big PITA).

Re: 16-18 inch shorty rifles

Love it. What make of barrel did you go with?

Planning something similar soon.

Creepy similar actually; Scope, barrel length, and chassis all exactly the same. Bipods and supressor are the only real difference. Mind sharing some MVs and load recipes when you can?

Re: 16-18 inch shorty rifles

Obermeyer stainless barrel, Remington varmint profile. My load recipes are simple - Black Hills 168gr AMAX is our duty ammo. Our barrier round is the Federal Tactical Bonded Tip 168 gr. Unless we change duty ammo, it will never shoot anything different.

I'll try to remember to bring the chronograph out the next time I get to the range (Tues). I'm interested in seeing what I'm getting out of this combo too. I'm practicing being patient, since we won't be setting up our "long" range course again until September. All I have at our PD range is 200.

Alan - 1st off I am very envious and have to admit, hate you a little because you rifle is set up pretty much like I hope mine will be when I get done and wish I would have instead of spending it how I did
grin.gif

On the Brevis - have you compared it much to other cans in .223?

I bought a YHM 7.62 QD can years ago when I didn't know much about cans and wish something like the Brevis was out. I am seriously considering making the Brevis my next can and was curious how much suppression I am going to be giving up. To me if it's not much, the OAL and Weight savings will definitely trump loss in suppression.

Thanks

Re: 16-18 inch shorty rifles

Ive shot a handfull of .223 cans the only side by side comparison ive done was next to a Gemtech Trek. I dont know all the specs on the trek, i never really researched it, the brevis was equally as quiet with out plugs in.

edit to add
although i have never weighed my brevis compact, its supposed to come in around 16oz

Savage 10FP-5R-SR .308 cut back to 18" sitting in a JP Enterprise chassis, Leupold Mk4 rings, Badger 20MOA rail, accu-shot mono-pod, Atlas bipod, YHM QD muzzle brake for the YHM Phantom 762 and Nightforce NXS 12-42x56. It's my do all "gerber tool" rifle. I need some bolt fluting and bolt knob work done and she'll project complete.

Re: 16-18 inch shorty rifles

BravoSector1,

Nice rig! Love the look of the stock. Pretty cool you have a Savage 10FP in the 5R 308 version. Increasingly, they seem to be pretty scare on sales boards like GB, here, or GA. What is your typical group size at 100 with your loads (factory or handloads)? Taken it out to 1000 yet? Thanks for sharing the pic.
