Alright, everyone and their deaf/dumb dog knows the Hogue factory stock on the SPS is no good. Better stocks are everywhere in every shape, size, and color. My main goal is to replace the factory stock with one that has aluminum block bedding and a free float barrel. Not asking much, huh? Well, the catch is I'm 5'10" with a 6'5" wingspan and sorta huge hands. I feel cramped behind the gun and the factory Hogue grip allows me to get my finger all the way to the second knuckle of my trigger finger when I aquire a firm grip. It's very uncomfortable and unnatural feeling to place the pad of my finger on the trigger and maintain some form of a grip. So will a palm swell fix my problem? Who else has had this problem and what were your solutions? Will a longer LOP help? I'm a state employee so I don't exactly have a lot of money to invest in an expensive stock, but I'm willing to spend some on a quality stock. Please help.!

As far as the fit and finish for you behind the rifle the only real good way for me in the past has to try some out.

My 2 cents worth is check out the Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist A5. It is a great stock, adj LOP, adj comb, and adj butt. the best part is that it is a well built stock with a budget friendly price.

I have a B&C Tactical Medalist A5 on my SPS tactical and I love it.

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

I have the same problem except for the fact that I am 6'2". As stated above, B&C makes a good stock and you can't go wrong with them. When u buy a stock just make sure that you have a method of extending the LOP!! Every gun that I buy the first thing I do is order an adjustable stock or take it to my Gunsmith to add a stock extension.

Not only will you be much more comfortable, but when the gun fits you you will shoot a whole lot better too!!

Good Luck!

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

Lop will help alot.. as will a bigger palm swell. A good option for a modular system is mcree precision. No bedding required, totally adjustable, converts to dbm, uses Ar style pistol grip.

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

Thank you all for your input.! I am trying to stay with a traditional looking stock, so no AICS or McRee. I like the A5, but it looks sorta weird to me..I love the adjustability of it, though. I'll be putting a Triad Tactical stock pack on whatever i get, so the adjustable cheek piece isn't a big issue. I like the wide, rounded foregrip of the BC M24. It only has a palm swell though, no vertical grip..Is there a happy medium anywhere?

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

Take a look at the Choate Tactical stock. I have one on a sps varmit and love it. I know some give choate a hard time, but i dont think you will find a stock as good for the money. If you are mil / le give them a call and they might help you out a bunch. I dont care how big of a paw you have it will not be to big for their grip.

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

My biggest problem is deciding between a vertical grip vs. a regular grip. I definitely need a palm swell, though. I guess I'll never know if i like the vertical grip if i don't get one, huh?

Exactly!! Go checkout some local gun shops and see if they have any rifles with vertical grips that they'd let you fondle. That may give you a better feel for what you'd prefer. Good luck.

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

My guess is you will like the vertical grip..may feel weird at first but it definetly grows on you. I just sent funds on an A5 and already have a mcree. I'll let you know what I think about it. Figured I would try the koolaid..gonna be hard to beat those mcrees though. It is inletted for mtu contour. This is where a mcree is more modular. If I don't like mtu contour and switch barrels it won't look to good in the A5. But in a mcree its no problem.

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

i had a Bell & Carlson and i was very dissatisfied with the fit and finnish.
i went with a KRG whiskey 3 stock and never looked back.

Yes, and Both.

Palm swell will help some with trigger finger placement comfort. And, I proper length of pull will also help with comfort and proper placement. Should help you shoot a little better too.

B&C will make your length of pull to whatever you need it to be.

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

Another vote here for B&C. I think they have some of the best bang-for-the-buck stocks out there.

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

Thank you all. I thought I had mentioned this earlier, but after reviewing my posts i guess i didn't. I don't want a chassis system. The look drives me crazy. They might be capable of extreme accuracy, but I just can't stand it, lol. I'm sorta leaning toward the B&C A2. Anyone have one they can give me their opinion?

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

I have similar problems 6' 5" with an 6' 6" arms span, ended up with a mcmillan A5 with adj LOP and cheek. if your not bothered about the adj cheek piece they do not adj variants.

The grip is great once you get used to the angle - try shooting a "thumb up" grip if you have large hands

I had the fully adj. model and it was nice.

Nice rifle! I did consider the M24 stock, and still am. But I'm trying to obtain a stock on a budget which will still allow me to buy the supplies i need to reload my own ammo. I'm still leaning toward the B&C A2 based on it's reviews and pricce.

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

I put a B&C BCS 1000 on mine. Got it from Iron Brigade Armory. Great stock

Do you have any pics of it mounted? Can you tell me more about your experience with that stock? It looks great!

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

I found me a LTR stock for cheap to hold me over until I get a McRee.

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

HS Precision with a palm swell would probably work well. I had one on my AAC-SD and was a great stock but I'm short and have smaller hands and really did not like the palm swell. I imagine it would be a perfect fit for a larger hand.

Re: New stock for R700 SPS Tactical, with a catch.....

You might want to reconsider the McRee. I would think you find the fit your after and not brake the bank.

I just checked out the McRee stocks again. They do look very, very nice. I still haven't put a new stock on my rifle, so I'm still looking around. I saw the H-S Precision M24 and nearly fell in love. Has anyone used this stock? Any horror stories?

You got some serious Gorillaitis, j/k bud. The Choate is a great buy, you can add spacers with no problem, hell, just call them direct they will probably do it for you at a very fair price. I have 2 Choate tacticals and a Mcrees, its nice too if you want a magazine you cant go wrong. You could get the Choate machined for bottom metal also, it would be about 200+ l;ess than the Mcrees.

It may be above your price point but take a look at the Manners stocks. If you see one you like call them up. They will send you one to try out. You just have to pay shipping both ways. It gives you a chance to actually handle the stock to see how it fits you.

I have had three bell carlson A2 stocks and loved everyone. I dont have the wingspan your talking about though. The stocks are built sturdy and a sps varmint will bolt right in and shoot 1/2" groups with no bedding. I bought the dicks sporting goods special and bolted it into one and it was amazing. Check out redhawk rifles

I too am large framed and tall and the only stocks that fit right are either thumb hole or vertical grip. Length of pull becomes less of an issue for me when I can get my thumb away from my face and nose. The Boyds Varmint thumbhole is not a traditional stock but at $100 it can't be beat for the amount of comfort it affords.

I want to thank you all for everything you've suggested. Every single response was researched and compared to what my original choice. The look of the M24 stock by HS is exactly what I am looking for, though. Is there anyone out there that has one, and what is your opinion of it? Please continue with all your ongoing support and advice. As always, God Bless.
