Looking for adivce on a helmet ballast, please. Are they worthwhile and work well? What type the long slim ones or tall and wide?
Was looking at the OSE NSW that acceptes the m2000. Any experience or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Using on opps cor with wilcox mount and a 14.

Thanks

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

I found they didn't really help me with a pvs-15 on an airframe, but they did help on a nonballistic ops core I had. With the heavier helmets the difference is negligible imho.

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

Thanks, i appreciate the feedback. I should clarify, non ballistic opps core.

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

If you are wearing the helmet for any length of time you will find it much more comfortable with ballast. I have two PT hemet set ups which are non ballistic and they both work well with balance, otherwise they get front heavy fast. And my NV system is PVS-14 on both. I use the longer system. Less Bulky that way.

The system I use is EOG, explosiveopsgear.com. A pouch with 6 bars, and velcro backing.http://www.explosiveopsgear.com/catalog/item/5995070/7540310.htm Heavier or lighter by removing the bars. I use three bars with the PVS-14. Got the helmet, NV mounts and ballast from modarmory.com and am very satisfied with the product, pricing and service. Huntler is a sponsor on thyis site.

Simple answer is-you need the balance, regardless of if it ballistic or not.

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

A counter weight will make your helmet more comfortable to wear. It will allow your to counter-balance the NVD and, makes it where you don't have to over-tighten your OCC dial. Most users compensate this way and, it gets very uncomfortable over time.

The OSE NSW is a good way to go; especially if you are running an M2000. I ran this setup in the Army. Since I now use a Manta Strobe, I am a big fan of the EOG Admin Pouch. It allows you to custom tailor your ballast with something that is USEFUL!! The last thing I want to wear is utterly, useless lead!! I fill mine with batteries. I know guys that throw full stripper clips in there, and I have even seen some guys put a velcro-backed breaching shell (shotgun) holders, too. Whatever works for you. Bottom line is, pick one that fits what you want to carry and, make it something useful.

If you want to take a look at any of those items, take a look at www.tnvc.com

Hope that helps!

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

I use the EOG on both my ANVIS 9 rigs

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

I carry my USGI 3X Mag on the back for counterweight and also a camera bag full of batteries:

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

Easy to make a counter-weight for the over hanging PVS14 .
this one is just a sewn pouch that is attached to the back . Filed with ( Flat Lead Wheel weights ). The flat wheel weights are nice & soft, flat & easy stacking to fill a pouch . Also the Lead wafers break-off in squares to easy stack & make the ballast any weight you want .

Great Posts-thanks everyone I appreciate the intel.

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

For everyone who is running a ballast set up on a Ballistic helmet, who is operationally active, i.e. deployed overseas. Whatever set up you chose, pick on that you can easily get the weights in and out of with out ripping the whole thing off every morning as the sun comes up. Also chose a place inside your gear to put the counterweights and do so every time so you can easily get them loaded back up when you have to remount your NVDs as darkness approaches. Its always good to get as much weight off of your Helmet as possible when you don't need to festoon the thing with every accessory under the sun (no pun intended).

Remember all of this stuff is supposed to help. Make your gear work for you.

With something like a Bump Helmet that you are only running at night for just viewing and hunting, it isn't a huge deal to be able to remove your weights unless you are using your base jump for other activities. My counterweights on my bump helmets stay mounted all the time.

Just some food for thought.

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

Agreed. Keep your system flexible.

Check out the mini-chemlight holder: http://tnvc.com/shop/eog-mini-chemlight-holder/

I use it to hold my batteries, in my pouch. Keeps them stable, separated and, immediately accessible. It will hold one AA or two CR123 batteries in each sleeve (or mini-chemlights). If you choose to carry lead or, need the extra ballast weight, egg-shaped lead fishing weights can be inserted, too.

Also, for those of you without a pouch, it is velcro backed and can just be secured onto the back of your helmet, all by it's lonesome. When you don't need the ballast, move it to your kit or, stow it in a pocket.

Works great!

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

i did see that and was planning on picking one up. but was it intended to mount to your helmet with chemlights? seems like it would be kinda awkward having 4" chemlights on your hat

and not to go off on too much of a tangent but what's the shelf life on chemlights after you take htem out of the foil? since mfg warns to leave them in the package until you're ready for use

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

Don't know what the intention was. I guess, with Velcro, it could be mounted wherever you would like. Some of our guys are running them on their sleeves, some on their armor, some on their packs.

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

These little Photon 11mW 850nm IR micro lights are also extremely handy to Velcro to your helmet, they will light up a 50'X50' area very nicely with no bloom and if you are out hunting and nail a hog, you can drop them on the ground lighting up your trail back out again....very highly recommended. I normally have 5-6 of them ready to use.

What kind of Battery life are you getting out of these?

Re: Helmet Ballast Advice

20 Hours is not bad at all. Back before Photon offered an IR version, I bought a bunch of these. God this was years ago. I changed out the visible diodes with IR 850 NM diodes. I even KG Gunkoted them tan, what a huge pain in the ass that was! I can't find that thread on TOS anymore. Musta disappeared.

Anyway I was getting about 16 hours off of the Diodes I had selected. I knew Photon eventually made these so I never revisited this project.

Thanks for reminding me of how handy these little guys are. I will have to pick some up again ! ! !
