Does it matter if I buy 5.56 or .223 ammo?

New guy to the AR...When you guys buy ammo for some fun shooting (as opposed to precision groupings), does it matter if you buy 5.56 or .223? The rifle is a Noveske with a 20" varmint barrel.

If it is a 556 barrel, no problem. If it is a 223, which I doubt, stay with 223.

You can shoot both on those barrels. Haven't tried the 223's out of mines though.

you should be fine with Noveske to shoot both 5.56 and .223, just going foward be sure to check your barrels... .223 wylde is great for shooting both and a lot of barrel manufacturers offer it, so if you ever build look into it...

Will a .223 Wylde barrel give you any problems in regards to reloading?

Grey, whichever is cheaper/availible.
Bobby, nope.

If you have a .223 barrel you can only shoot .223. Both of the case dimensions on the outside are exactly the same except the brass on the 5.56 on the INSIDE is thicker and loaded hotter. Also a the throat on a 5.56 barrel is different then a .223 barrel. Shoot what ever is cheaper. But dont shoot steel. I use to shoot steel ammo (tula, wolf) but all it does is wear out my feed lips and my extractors. plus its really dirty because the steel doesnt expand in the barrel like brass does so carbon get behind it.

Your fine shooting either in a 5.56 or Wylde chamber.

With the steel:
I shoot it without any problems. Sure it's dirtier and less accurate, but it's cheap. The steel they use is a mild steel, which is soft compared to the other components. Wearing out feed lips: mags can be had for $10 a piece or less. The amount of $$$ you save shooting steel would far outway the mags you could supposedly go through.

Congrats on the Noveske,
Your AR has a Wylde Chamber that allows both the use of 5.56 and .223 without causing any issues. If you require further confirmation on ammo types ect. check the owners manual or give Noveske customer service a call. Some companies will state in thier manuals what ammo will work best, what wont and why as well as if it would void the warranty if used. Enjoy
