Re: favorite caliber

Well with my NCstar ACOG equipped slingshot shooting high-grade airsoft BBs I can usually hit a watermellon at 1,000 yards all day long.

Re: favorite caliber

yes mike seriously im getting in to long rang and was just wondering no need to be a ass

Re: favorite caliber

300 win mag is a great choice considering cost of ammo ballistics etc..260rem if you wanna go smaller.

Re: favorite caliber

For efficiency and economy, a fast twist 223 throated for long high BC bullets can teach you a lot. But in most cases this would be a custom (or heavily modified factory) build so…

For the beginner I’d go with either a 308 (if you don’t reload or don’t care to) or a 243 (if you reload or wish to start) and the Remington SPS Varmint is a good starting platform… just change out the stock once you start to get serious.

Re: favorite caliber

Grayson, there are many cartridges out there that can perform well in long range, if you want to get into long range shooting, we need to know something about your preferences, and how far you will be shooting, then we can recommend a cartridge that would best fit your needs.

For general purposes, 300WM/WSM will perform well out to very long distances.

Re: favorite caliber

Depends on what you consider 'long range'. I'd go with .308 Win
and 6.5 Creedmore for up to and including 1000 yds. 338 LM for beyond.
You'll see 300WM thrown in cause they are bad ass.

Re: favorite caliber

as a generic answer, get a 308 and shoot factory match ammo until YOU figure out what YOU need. someone else's favorite may or may not be the best choice for you.

Actually there is a need to be an ass. It's a stupid question, one usually reserved for the likes of trolls whose sole purpose is to bump up their thread count; which I'm not convinced isn't your goal.

Next, can you ask a more broad, ambiguous question? No, you can't because you've already done that. Can you be more specific? What is long range shooting to you? How far do you want to go? What current range do you have? What is your budget? What is your experience? On and on and on. So try doing a little research and then come and ask an intelligent question and you'll get an intelligent response.

Finally, you may want to tone down the name calling because next time you want to fire off your pie hole and call me an ass your tenure here will be finished.

Re: favorite caliber

well when you're new here it's best to try to learn as much as you can and be as specific as possible when asking new questions so that people can actually help you out.

after about 3 minutes of using the Snipershide search engine by google (located on the right side of every page between the shout box and the photo gallery pictures)

Here are a few links that I came up with that talk about long range calibers but a little more in depth that you can read..

Re: favorite caliber

I really like to shoot my TRG in 338 but the 10/22 is far cheaper and shooting it out to 100+ yards is a blast and very cheap to do.. "Favorite" caliber encompasses a lot of territory and a lot of personal preference...

That's not very nice, nor welcoming.

I will tell you that these guys see these kind of post at least twice a week if not more. So yeah they may seem like asses but you have to look at from their end! All these new people posting the same questions all the time.

Also as some mentioned what is long range to YOU? Some people think 500 yards is long range. There are tons of guys on here that shoot at 1000 like you may at 100!

This is the correct way your question should have been asked!

Hello I'm new here and wanting to get into long range shooting. I'm just wondering what your guys favorite caliber for ranges up to ___ for a new shooter?

Again some will say they love the 338LM so you go out and buy one thinking well since the guys on the hide love it so much it must be good. And then you end up wasting you money, ammo, and barrel only shooting at 300 yards when you could have done that with a .223. Get the point?

Re: favorite caliber

For the reloading cost and the great ballistics so far I am in for the .260... I know there are better, there always is, but I like the tight groups and nice recoil...

Good Luck!!
