Sidearms & Scatterguns All-around 9mm Handgun

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

I personally just picked up a Sig p229 for carry purposes but the 226 is right there with the best of them. I would have got a 226 of I wasn't carrying it. Anyways, I have a buddy who's a state trooper here in MA and his choice was the 226. Bought it, has put ~60,000 rounds +/- and other than routine DCOA, has had to do nothing more than replace the sear spring and recoil spring. Talk about reliable.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

From what i've seen the Glock is top dog in the pistol world for factory guns, plus if you can get it to feel right with all the aftermath stuff for it then you must have weird hands.

As for the list, the Sig 226 in terms of quality it tops the glock but the problem is it's expensive.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

Interesting Poll. I'm not surprised that many have found the Glock to be the go-to crisis weapon, despite all its ergonomic shortcomings.

I am a LEO with 17 years "on the job". I carried a Sig P229 for 11 years (over 30,000 rounds), kept it very clean and it was completely flawless. I practiced until I mastered the DA/SA trigger and regularly shot 250/250 with in on qualification courses. Amazing pistol. I've shot P226s and P220s with the same result. Accurate and very reliable. As with any pistol, you gotta practice till you master the trigger and controls.

About seven years ago I was issued a Glock 22. Hated the grip shape and angle. I worked with it and became proficient with the trigger. You can train almost anyone to master the Glock trigger (as long as it isn't the heavier NY trigger). The short reset on the Glock allows for accurate double taps. As a SWAT Operator for six years I shot the crap out of the Glock 22 and later a Glock 34. After standing on the shooting line with 40 other shooters, on a regular basis for years, everyone shooting issued Glock 34s, I have to say Glocks are highly reliable and very accurate. They are tough and durable and will shoot reliably in the snow, rain, heat, dust, mud and whatever you throw at them.

I've shot everything on the list and if faced with a SHTF situation, I would select the P226, if the Glock isn't an option. I'd be confident in either system under the worst circumstances.

As far as trigger reset being a myth, call me crazy but I'm pretty sure all simi auto pistols have a trigger reset. You train your muscle memory by practicing trigger reset in a safe training enviroment. That is, after pulling the trigger, you slowly allow your trigger finger to release the trigger just until the reset activates and then you pull it again. Once you've developed the muscle memory, you don't feel the reset. And yes, you should be double tapping fast enough to not feel the reset at all.

I'm curious to see how the M&P holds up over time. Seems promising and a big improvement over Glock ergos. Anything HK I've been exposed to has always been rock solid. I own a USP--solid performer.

Lots of good options, but I marked the Sig as my choice.

3rd Gen 19. Perfect for everyday carry.

About sums it up!

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

none of those are my first choice but for concealed carry, the gloack 19 is hard to beat, the beretta 92 is also on my 9mm list. I voted for the HP because everybody should have one anyway.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

another vote for g19 yeah i kno wit's not listed.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

Other than the terrible trigger, I really have been impressed with my Springfield XDM 5.25 Competition and a factory 19 round capacity is pretty nice especially with the option of a +2 baseplate.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

I voted for the sig p225 but the sig p225, smith wesson m&p, and the HK P30 would all be great. High powers are also great but I don't think they're as durable as the others. Actually any of them are great but for me I'd go with those three, you should go try them all or hold them in your local store.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

M&P only because a Glock 19 isn't on the list. Get a Glock 19, send it to bowie tactical concepts, robar, glockworx etc and make it exactly how you want it. You'll still be under 1K and you'll have a great custom gun that's exactly how you want it.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

I have sold all my Glocks as well, the M&P has been to S&W x2 since purchase and still kicks brass in face...need to spend some money on Apex to see if we can fix it. My wife and I have both gone to CZ's, most people I meet at the range and training events have never shot one and they seem dumbfounded after shooting mine...it is HEAVY but love it.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

I've heard great stuff about all these guns. And I believe it. I chose a G17. It's not pretty. And it's not the most accurate (neither am I) But I chose Glock for the same reason I have an AK. Loose tolerances=rock solid reliability in adverse conditions. I have a Remington 700 R5 milspec bull barrel for precision. And if I was gonna hunt with a pistol, I would get a Sig. But I like to have a pistol and a long gun that I can drop in the mud, blow it out, and it will fire.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

I sleep well knowing my glock 19 is by side. Once I got it back from David Bowie I couldn't stand not having my 17L done. So I fixed that problem

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

I'd have to go with the FN built Browning Hi Power Mk3. It has the bugs of the older generations worked out of it. No magazine disconnect and they throated the feed ramp to handle ammunition other than FMJ. It also seems to rest in the hand naturally. It's John M. Browning's finest pistol design. It's dead simple to strip and assemble and utterly reliable. If it fails, it's all steel so it makes a suitable bludgeon. I might be a tad biased though as I've had one on my hip all day, every day for the past six months.

Hmm. The Navy Seals apparently don't share your concern over the Sig's ability to do just this.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

Sig229 tactical. 20+1. My primary tactical handgun. But I voted for the 226

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

I'm going with the CZ 75 Shadow. Get one from CZ custom and you'll have one sweet blaster.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

Cz 75, I like the cz 75 phantom. Hard to beat 18plus 1. Accurate, factory night sights, fairly light even fully loaded.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

Smith and Wesson M&P gets my vote. I have a 9mm Pro Series. It's accurate, reliable and comfortable in my hand. Great pistol!

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

As with some of the others, I'm a Glock guy too but if I had to pick one of the above it would be the M&P. I really like the ergonomics of these pistols and if I wasn't so invested with the Glocks I would be a M&P fan. The guys I shoot with that shoot these guns win a lot.

Re: All-around 9mm Handgun

I have owned several glocks, xd's and xdm's. I just recently picked up a FNH-FNS 9 and really like it. It seems more comfortable in my hand than my other pistols, glock and xdms. Still getting used to the trigger. Its light weight, has high capacity and has factory installed night sights. It is my conceal carry gun. Would I choose it over the glock or xdm all the time. Not sure yet. I like them all and would trust them all to go bang every time. I would not by any means consider myself a great shot with a pistol. Its getting better with time. I can shoot the fns just as good as I can the glock, xdm. It is made in the USA as well. Just my two cents worth.
