I have an R700 I am trying to mount a PH 3-15 on. I locked the rifle down on a bench rest, screwed down a Seekin's 20 moa scope base and checked level.

Without getting in to every little detail, I was wondering on something. I got some beautiful Seekin's 4/6 rings in the mail and they came with a cute little alan wrench.

I don't have a torque wrench here. I mounted my scope using that alan wrench and attempted to zero my rifle. I shot 1/2 a box off and took the rifle home before giving up on zeroing. I took off took the rings and noticed there is a slight dent in something. I can't tell if it's the finish or the actual scope itself. Either way I can tell it's nothing major. Barely noticeable by eye.

Here is my situation / option's:

The loco'al smith here in town wants $40 for 15 minutes tops of work. Maybe he has a 1 hour min. of work either way i'm not paying that.

I can't find a damn torque wrench anywhere that is available in inch lbs. I have called and driven to several places with no luck.

I am sure someone is going to toss some food at me in here and hope they do. But I am not going to shoot this rifle anymore until it's mounted propperly. I am obviously doing something wrong when using that alan key. I have pretty strong hands and I problably tightened down the one side to much and created that pinch point.

I guess it's good I didn't shoot much more than I did. I suppose that little dent/blemish could be a lot worse than it actually is.

Insight appreciated,
-Ms

Your Seekings rings shouldve came with a Torx wrench, and you dont need a torque wrench either, just snug them up and youre good to go. Can you post a pic of this ding in your scope? Mounting a scope is really childs play, just did one yesterday matter of fact.

Re: Scope mounting help

It can't be that easy because I managed to screw it up.

Yes I will get the camera out and snap one or two shots. Hopefully it's nothing more than a deep scope ring mark.

I will post the picture's up in about an hour. I am runnin to cal-ranch to grab a kit for this job.

Thanks,
-Ms

Here are the image's I thought I would post. I'm visiting Dad and he's laughing at me. Problably not worthy of calling it a dent. But better safe than sorry and get the opinion's of professional's.

Thanks much,

Re: Scope mounting help

Bummer about the ring marks. When using the allen/torx key, rule of thumb is to use the shorter end between the thumb and index finger and you should be good-to-go. Cranking with the long end, well , you already know.

As for torque wrench, they carry them at Sportsmans Warehouse.

Re: Scope mounting help

You can get a weaver or a FAT wheeler wrench from Amazon. If you have a Prime account, you can get them without any shipping costs directly from Amazon. They cost ~ $40. Cough up the money. I whined a bit about having to get one, but I've ended up using it many, many times; not just on scopes, but on my mini-chassis too. I think it's an essential tool.

Re: Scope mounting help

I have never seen indentations like that before and I crank them down pretty tight. Maybe there is something wrong with your rings to cause a bite like that in those areas, almost like the rings were undersized.

Re: Scope mounting help

That kind of looks like you might have the wrong size rings for your scope. I've fully cranked down rings before and it didn't leave marks like that.

The torx wrench they send you is adequate just use the small part as your leverage handle. As tight as you can turn it using the small end will give you very close to 15 inch/lbs of torque.

Re: Scope mounting help

Just go by an automotive shop and ask one of the mechs if you can borrow a torque wrench for a couple of minutes.

Carry on 6 pack of regular beer and one six pack of light, that way you're covered.
