Best barrel length for AE Mk111 308

I just picked up a AE Mk111 in 308 and it has a 24" barrel. I'm thinking of cutting it down to 20" and threading it for a can. 24" with a can makes it pretty long. I have a TRG 22 with a 20" barrel and see no problems with that length but some people smarter than I have said you need that extra 4" when you're trying to get to 1000 yards. Thoughts?
Thanks,

20" will probably get you there, being in Colorado doesn't hurt.

I'd personally think about 22", it's a good compromise.

No matter what length you choose the more important factor in getting to 1,000 will be the bullets you choose. Push some high BC 155's fast and the little bit of barrel length won't make that big of a difference.

Thanks, yea, I didn't even think of the thinner air up here and we usually shoot at 7500 feet,

I'm running a factory 24" w/AI brake on my MkIII folder and it's perfect IMHO. Granted, I haven't fired it at long range yet. However, keep in mind - you can always cut excess barrel off, but, you can't add it back on. Try it with the 24" first before machining down (if you decide to do that?). You may in fact end up keeping the 24" barrel.

20" will easily get you to 1000 at your elevation. You will probably only lose 50-75 fps by going from 24'' to 20" in 308.

I had mine cut to 20" to use with my suppressor. My opinion on it was: The point of this combination is to be handy and fun for practice and training. If I want to chase ballistics I'll shoot 243 or 260 with a longer barrel and a brake. And that's exactly what I did, I had a 243 barrel at 24" that I ran with a brake when I wanted to take it seriously. You have an AI, barrels are easy... it just takes money!

G'day fellas,
So should I order the 20" with brake or the 24" without brake from AI.
Not sure if you can get the 24" with a break in the Mk111
Cheers

I ordered my 24" from Mile High, they threaded and installed FTE brake for me. Great work, forget price, but hey-I was buying that rifle so it didn't matter. I would split the difference maybe and have them cut to 22" and run with it.

If you're getting the 2.0 Folder and going to Pack/Carrying it around a lot then I'd go with the 20" with Brake/Can. It's just so nice to have a shorter package rifle sometimes. If it's going to be a Fixed Stock and Range/Bench gun then I'd go 22" or just stay with 24" threaded. Either way the FPS you'd be losing is so minimal that it's not worth mentioning.
