I just picked up a a Savage model 12 F-class rifle and had it fitted with a 28" Kreiger barrel, 8.5 twist. The chamber was cut with a standard .284 winchester reamer. I am shooting 180 gr Bergers and I have to seat them further into the case than I would like to fit the chamber. Seating the bullet with an OAL of 3.011" (or 3.305" measured from the ogive with a Hornady comparator) puts if .015" into the lands.

I am considering having the throat lengthened. Can anyone suggest what the ideal COAL should be for this set-up?

Thanks for any help that you can offer!

My F-Class rig in .284 has .220 Freebore for the 180's....keeps me above the neck shoulder junction.

Which 180gr? The VLD or the Hybrid? The Hybrid needs a lot less throat to keep the bullet shank above the neck/shoulder junction.

IMO .220 works for VLD's, .188 works better for the Hybrids.
