I am looking to see what type of accuracy - FPS I can expect from a 16" Remington LTR .308?

I shoot the 175 grn Black Hills/ SWAMMO... So if you can give me some feed back, I would GREATLY appreciate it.

accuracy will be just fine, same as longer barrels. As for velocity, you should get 2500 fps.

This is just from what i have read on this site as i don't own a 16" 308

Re: 16" .308 Bolt Guns - Accurracy

Long answer is it all depends on the barrel and twist. A shorter barrel should not affect accuracy in a negative way if the barrel twist and bullet weight match, so that there is enough length to stabilize the bullet once it exits the barrel.

It has been said that shorter barrels are more accurate than longer ones because they are stiffer and suffer less from movement caused by firing a round.

I think 16" might be too short of optimum velocity of the 308 for long distance shooting, 18" is better, 20-22" might be the best compromise of velocity and maneuverability.

Matt,
I'd be cautious about going straight to 16. Consider 18 first and then maybe 16. Won't 16 put you into the flutes? Also, what are you wanting to acheive that the 20" LTR cant do?

Jack,

You may be right on the flutes... Looking to make it more compact BUT NOT loosing any accuracy.

I was going to SBR the barreled action but after LONG debates and research the .308 begins to really suffer below 14"...

Soo... I am looking to make it a packable rifle... I am looking at the XLR folding chasis among others..

Re: 16" .308 Bolt Guns - Accurracy

Velocity, in my experience, will take a dive.
You will not have an effective range past 600 yards and the blast could be detrimental to accuracy.
I have owned 18.5 and 20 inch 308 rifles (and currently a LMTMWS 16") so I am basing my observations on that. I would consider the 308 semi in 16" configuration just strictly for the additional firepower.

Re: 16" .308 Bolt Guns - Accurracy

Damn it.... sooo maybe staying at 20" then.... Good thing its already threaded...

I have a 18" PSS built... its VERY accurate... but I have NOT stretched it too far to see what it does.

Re: 16" .308 Bolt Guns - Accurracy

My 18.5" gas gun licks ass at 700 yards, the furthest I've shot it to date. I wouldn't hesitate to do the same length in a bolt gun. Velocity may be down from a longer barrel but accuracy seems fine.

One of my pals has an OBR with a 16" barrel. Talk about some fierce muzzle blast! I much prefer the 20" barrel on my AW.

That's awesome, but will it lick ass at home in bed with the girlfriend????

Re: 16" .308 Bolt Guns - Accurracy

Matt....don't get down on the 16 inch barrel. I'm running a 16.5 inch barrel with 175 fed match (I also have tailored my handloads to match). I have no issue with accuracy out 700+ and have taken it out to 960 or so a time or two. I would assume it is for duty use as well...the barrel length makes it perfect for urban and vehicle hides and at that size will fit nicely in my wife's tennis and softball bags, great for moving unnoticed in plain clothes into a hide. Just my observations.

I get 303 British Ballistics (174 grains at about 2440 fps).

Actually I get slightly better performance but the 303 drop chart matches very well.

The 175s in my 16 inch carbine (AR format) gets between 2450 and 2500 (depending on lots of Black Hills ammo).

It also shoots 3/4 to 1/2 moa ( variable is me) out to about 400 meters (farthest I have shot that rifle).

Re: 16" .308 Bolt Guns - Accurracy

I Chopped and threaded my Savage 10FP to 16" I had it out to 718Yards last week. Worked just fine. I've taken a friends 16" OBR out to 890 before.

My Savage prefers the 168 FGMM. but thats my rig. YMMV.

Re: 16" .308 Bolt Guns - Accurracy

Accuracy will be fine. You will take a hit on velocity , but with the right bullet/load you should be able to shoot out to 1000+ with good results.
