So I've got this Remington 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD in an AICS 1.5 stock, with Burris XTR medium rings.

It's been lightly used, so I figured this seems like the way to do it:

Check barrel, get it clean re: Mail Call Monday: Precision Rifle Cleaning

Check torque on action screws, verify 53 in-lbs.

Position scope and rings. Torque rings onto scope base at 65 in-lbs.

(Came across some recommendations in my research to lightly sand the interior of the rings for a better grip on the scope... thoughts?)

Level rifle, then level scope, secure scope, torque screws to 20 in-lbs. (Bought a couple of mini levels to do this bit)

Go to range, attempt to hit target.

I would not sand anything. If you are going to lap them, then use the correct tool and compound. 20 in-lbs is plenty to hold a scope, if you hand sand, you run the risk of marring your scope body.

Re: Setting up a new(ish) bolt gun

Setting up the scope has been the hardest part. I've been fiddling with it forever, trying to find the optimal positioning based on where I naturally get a cheekweld on the stock.

Re: Setting up a new(ish) bolt gun

Question: Does anyone know the specs on the screws that secure the cheekpiece? I'd like to put in thumbscrews, but it seems simpler to pick some up at the hardware store instead of paying $30 for ones with AI stamped on them.
