Re: 308 deer/elk bullet suggestions

If you buy factory, look at the Barnes Votex 165/8 gn. It has proved to be quite accurate for the guys that I shoot with. If you roll your own, either a Barnes ttsx or Nosler Accubonds on 165/168gns. I you do your part and keep thing logical and ethical, they will more than handily do their part. It will be more important for the penetration on the elk than the deer.

+1 on the Partition. Never had one fail either.

Re: 308 deer/elk bullet suggestions

For whitetails I load Speer 130 gr. HP's. I've taken deer from 30 yards out to just over 400 with it. When 130's hit, they will just punch in and turn the boiler room into lumpy jello. Most of the time the fragments will not even penetrate through the opposing ribcage.

To each his own. I happen to like having the chest cavity spill out once I open up the deer's diaphram. Over penetration and blowing fist sized chunks out the other side of the deer is not my thing. Accurate quick killing shot placement is.

Re: 308 deer/elk bullet suggestions

Loaded up some 180 gr Speer spbt bullets with RL-17 @ 47.5 gr
where the best group was in Federal 308 match cases using 210M primers, shooting from a 22" barrel with a 1/10 twist the 2742fps has shot well in three 308 so far.
Have used the bullet for several years for both elk and mule deer....

Re: 308 deer/elk bullet suggestions

Barnes TSX
Berger hunting VLD
Nosler Partition/Accubond
Hornady Interbond
Sierra Game King
(not in any particular order)

Take your pick they will all put your target in the dirt if you do your part. There is no magic bullet that can substitute for poor shot placement....

Take your time, know your DOPE, wait for the right shot, and the animal will go down.
