Here are some pics of my YHM Mite Aluminum Monocore. This puppy had about 400 rounds on here before I threw her in the Tumbler. No need for chemicals. Just 4hrs and she looks like this!
I wrapped a piece of Duck Tape on the threads to protect them. All you need is a piece just big enough to cover them up.
I would say it is about 99.5% cleaned. Take note on the blast baffle and in between the rest of the baffles.

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

Thanks! This tumbler is freaking awesome!!! Im trying to think of what else I can put in there to clean.. Are you guys using your tumblers to clean other things besides brass?

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

I use mine on my AAC Element baffles when they need cleaning. When I went down to cleaning after every 300rounds I didn't have to scrape at all. Best way to clean a suppressor in my opinion.

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

it was pretty crudded up. no pics though. next time i go shoot it, ill take before and after pics.

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

Just got back from putting 350 rounds through my YHM Mite. Here are some pictures before it went into the STM Tumbler and the Dawn soap that I am using. When its done tumbling, Ill post the after pics!

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

Impressive.

Have you had any negative effects on any threads or contact faces? None appear in the photos, but you have a closer and more detailed view.

The corners where the anodizing is off, that is previous or recent?

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

No, I have not had any negative effects on any threads or contact faces. I simply wrap a piece of duck tape the same width as the threads around the threads. As far as the anodizing coming off. I think a little bit has to due with the Stainless Media.. To me, the anodizing doesnt do dick for the monocore but make it look all pretty. The stainless media cleans the entire unit..

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

Well, I guess I just found another reason to get one of these tumblers. How many pieces of 338LM brass can I do per load, that is the questions.

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

Not sure how many pieces. go to STM website, and I think they tell you on there..

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

Looks like around 30 pieces, give or take. Wish I had the coin, that 40lb looks awesome!

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

Be careful using stainless tumbling media.

It's ok to use sparingly and in certain extreme instances, but it will damage brass, metal parts, and anything else you throw in there. After a period of time you will lose thread crispness and even go out of spec! You'd be better off glass blasting than using stainless media. Glass is far less damaging to metals than stainless which is harder than most of the metals people choose to use it with.

How do I know this?

A buddy of mine was religious about using stainless media before he had problems with it in his loaded ammo. The longevity of his brass was suffering greatly! Instead of 5 or 6 loadings from new brass he was only getting 3 or 4 with using stainless media!

If you notice, after every cleaning, shine a flashlight on the 'dirty' water while you're pouring it out. You will see tiny flecks of brass flowing out with the dirty water!

That's the longevity of your brass going down the drain!

Stainless tumbling shot / media was originally designed for use in the machining and plating industry to clean up burred and blemished heavy metal parts. Someone got the wise idea to throw brass, a very soft metal, in with stainless media, and the 'fad' has caught on.

Not me. The internet and all of it's so called 'knowledge' can infect a larger amount of viewers as opposed to a decade ago.

All too often people follow the 'fad' instead of thinking it out!

If that's aluminum that you are cleaning ... I'd not do it too often! It WILL change the dimensions of the part over time. To put it into perspective ... it's the equivalent of using a sandblaster to clean your car!

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

I dont think I will have any issues with the threads. I wrap those suckers with duck tape. I doubt the media is hitting the tape hard enough to damage the threads. How much could the dimensions change over time? Yea, the the anodizing did come off a little bit, but if the dimensions do change, I dont see how it would affect the monocore in such a way that it would render it unsafe to use. Its not going to make the holes any bigger or smaller IMO.. I have not read anywhere on the net that dimensions have changed on a piece of AL for using stainless media? Do you have anything to back up your claim? I think we are both in the same boat with what "we think" might and might not happen when using stainless media. I guess the only way to tell is wait and see what happens over time

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

One thing I need to figure out is how in the world can I clean the inside of the tube itself? I see that there is either lead or carbon built up on the inside. When I go to screw in the monocore there is very very slight resistance..
Any ideas?

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

Flexhone(ball type) used with solvent(minerial spirts) at a slow speed(cordless drill) stay off threads. Just enough to remove the crud. Any tool used to excess can damage.. I think the negitive post twards ss media probally reflects misuse.(tumbleing to long)My guess the "tiny flex" of brass came from flash holes that were not deburred of jacket metal from seating the bullet

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

Whats this? Never heard of it. Where can I buy one?

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

Industrial supply house(Granger or MSC) most auto parts stores(limited sizes there)you want one slightly larger than the bore but not tight.

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

Yes thats the one Fredrick. I hone soft alloy bores on brake master cylinders every day you just stop when the crud is gone not damage base metal

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

Im not so sure I would want to use that on a AL tube. I can only imagine how much material that Flexhone takes away..

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

I have used a flexhone to clean up a chamber, I don't think I would use it on an aluminum tube. It works wonders on a tight chamber though.

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

If you are afraid if removing material(I never have) use a brass or nylon brush on a short cleaning rod wraped with scotch brite pad run on a cordless drill or by hand if you like with cleaner

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

i'm thinking about doing this, but should i be concerned about the possibly toxic water since it has lead in it? how do you dispose of the liquid? thanks!

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

As far as I know everybody using ss media pours the water down the drain. Even when cleaning brass heavy metals are present. I am on a septic tank so it remains in my back yard in the tank.Thing that make you go HMMMMM.

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

It either goes into the drain or the aquifer. You put more hazardous things down your drain with all the cleaning supplies etc.. When you get into certain chemicals, like the DIP (peroxide/vinegar), then yea, that shit is HAZMAT and must be disposed of properly.

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

lanfill, hazmat area.

Re: Very HAPPY with Stainless Tumbler!

You could try out some acrylic media in the wet tumbler (check out McMaster-Carr). It might be easier on the anodizing, but might take longer.
