I'm headed to Montana in November for an elk/ mule deer hunt. I'll be flying out and was wondering when you guys fly to and from a hunt how do you transport the meat? I won't be able to bring all of the meat home but still wanted to bring some home. The guide assures me that any meat I don't take will go to a local food bank or someone wanting/ needing the meat, but I want some for my freezer. Any suggestions?

Re: Transporting meat home

Killed an elk several years back in Wyoming, all said and done it was $1000 to get processed and shipped back. $500 for processing, and $500 for shipping. I did get some of the meat made into sausage and some into jerky, so this made it more expensive. If I had it to do over again, I would just get the steaks cut and buy a cooler and bring it back on the plane. I did not have a choice to fly it back with me last time due to killing on the last day of the hunt.

I hope this helps

Eddie

+1

Unless you drive (and that can be debated depending on distance/time etc.) it's the most cost effective, even if you have to buy 2 coolers.

I brought home a large amount (I don't remember how much) of Salmon in an aircraft approved insulated box, sold by the fishmongers at Pike Street Market. slipped right under the seat. That's the key, it has to fit, or go overhead. If you have time to freeze it, it will keep all the way home.
We live about 3 hours from our Elk Camp, so we take the bull to the local meat guy, he hangs it for a week, then butchers it. We have two large ice chests with us anyway, so they are empty on the way home. We stop in Burns on the way home, and fill up the chests. Can always run to Big R for another one if need be.

A buddy of mine does this when he goes to the coast fishing. Just pack it in regular or dry ice and tape it shut good.
