they made better bullets for magnum why not LR

Re: they made better bullets for magnum why not LR

I might be just having to do with the keel design of the skirt of the lead bullet in the LR round,

but I am just a simple man from the country side.

Re: they made better bullets for magnum why not LR

I saw a discussion about this recently enough (probably here on the hide). I think the general idea was that 22lr is just really a cheap, fun to shoot round. If you start putting ballistic tips on them then they become expensive to shoot. Besides if your going to be hunting then your better of getting yourself a 223/204 etc

Re: they made better bullets for magnum why not LR

This indeed has already been discussed. As the Swede has said the heeled bullet is one factor, another is cost, also the fact that you are dealing with a cartridge that does not lend itself well to many bullet weights. It is a weak designed case not suited to hot rodding. Most guns designed for the cartridge would probably have feeding issues, etc, I could go on and on.
Besides all that it is simply rediculous, like putting a 3 piece suit on a monkey.

Re: they made better bullets for magnum why not LR

that and the bullet is just going too darn slow to utilize a ballistic tipped bullet. it is just more accurate with the style bullet that is currently in use

Re: they made better bullets for magnum why not LR

Probably a combination of:

cost

the bullets would get long and not feed in many guns

if they weren't long, the tip wouldn't do anything

twist wouldn't stabilize a longer bullet anyway

1116 FPS

There are a variety of different types of .22 LR loads. They are often divided into four distinct categories, based on nominal velocity:
Subsonic, which also includes "target" or "match" loads, at nominal speeds below 1,100 ft/s (340 m/s).
Standard-velocity: 1,000–1,135 ft/s (300–346 m/s). Common velocities are around 1,125 ft/s (343 m/s).
High-velocity: 1,200–1,310 ft/s (370–400 m/s) per second.

+1 on that Chiller.

Hey, if you want wennie bump, get a 22mag

Besides, they do and always have made a better bullet, its called a match load..and it can quadruple (and more) the cost of shooting 22.
22 rf is actually pretty flexible for its cartridge design. You have everything from bread and butter to exotic options available. By the time you re-engineer a new rf bullet, you will have to engineer a new chamber, etc and down the road you go.

Re: they made better bullets for magnum why not LR

Pressure/velocity parameters pretty much eliminate any jacketed bullets.

There is quite a selection though. Snakeshot, RN, FP, HP, in 29-60gr options, subsonic to 1600-ish. Then there is stuff like the Triton quick-shok.

Re: they made better bullets for magnum why not LR

I'm not sure there are a lot of unexplored avenues of 22 rimfire development. It's already pretty versatile for what it is.

Re: they made better bullets for magnum why not LR

New guy here but a rimfire junkie none the less. Why would you need a ballistic tip 22lr. Will a CCI stinger not due the trick. Get you some wolf or standard plus shoot some one hole groups and be happy. Lipstick on a pig.
