Looking for savage action?

I am wanting to start a new build as my .308 is almost finished. I want to build a .223 off of a savage or stevens action? Is there any place that sells just the action and trigger? I know about the target action and think that is just highway robbery! Plus I want more than one shot at a time. Thank you guys for any help!

Re: Looking for savage action?

For new actions and barrels this is the place to get them. Sometimes you can find complete used Savage or Stevens guns at Cabela's pretty reasonable but with more shooters discovering how well they shoot they are getting harder to find for a bargain price.

We bought two new Model 11 actions from him along with two Shilen Select Match barrels and are pleased with the service.

Re: Looking for savage action?

Also you do realize that there is Savage target actions that are repeaters. If I remember right the single shot ones are 3 bolts and they do not have the greatest stock selection. From what I have been told you have to get one through a savage dealer and have them order one. Otherwise I run my regular small shank Savage 10 and it shoots bug holes. People underestimate the accuracy of savage. Good luck to you.

Re: Looking for savage action?

This is great information, we are making a new design in our shop and I was forced to buy new rifles and discard the barrels. I am sure that being able to source the receivers will be much more affordable than buying complete rifles.

Re: Looking for savage action?

Since you think the target actions are over priced. You might as well just buy a complete rifle and sell the stuff you don't need.

You won't find a new action for cheaper then you can get a Stevens rifle and for a tiny bit more you can buy a Savage and get the Accu-trigger.

Re: Looking for savage action?

We are basing our builds on the savage action with accu trigger. I just do not like the fact that I have to buy complete rifles for the actions.

Re: Looking for savage action?

Alright guys thank you! I think I will be sending Jim Briggs an email shortly. Also I did not know that the target actions came in a repeater and not just the single shot, forgive my stupidity....I still believe it is over priced when you can purchase an entire Stevens 200 for under that price. Thank you guys!

Re: Looking for savage action?

Jim is TERRIBLE at responding to email...you are much better served calling him.

Part of the reason he's TERRIBLE at responding to email is 1. he's busy as hell and 2. he provides fantastic customer service over the phone.

Seriously, call him...if you don't get him, try again; leave a message and he WILL call you back.

Another option is to scour gun forums for used actions; they come available quite regularly here, SavageShooters (have to pay for classifieds access), 24hourcampfire, LRH, etc. Also, sometimes you can find good deals on Gunbroker; last year I bought two very lightly used complete Model 11s with Accutrigger for $300 each + shipping.

Re: Looking for savage action?

I understand your feelings concerning the prices of the target actions. However, even if you go the Stevens route for your build, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

One of the absolute smoothest actions I have ever had was a Stevens 200 in .308WIN. Super smooth, and locked up tight. I wish I still had it in fact.

Good deals can be had all over everywhere, you just have to be patient and look. Jim is an excellent person to deal with as well. I have had nothing but great service from Northland.

I currently have a .308 built off of a Stevens action and I love it! I was thinking today that instead of a new rifle build I need to buy some gear (rangefinder, shooting mat, tripod, etc. ) so this project may be put on the back burner

+100 on getting a hold of Jim at NSS. You must call him though and make sure you have some time to talk because Jim will reel ya in. Set a price limit for yourself because Jim's also a great salesman and if your not careful you'll end up with more than you planned on.

Re: Looking for savage action?

i shot my busses rifle with an accu-trigger. i personally didn't like it. of course i had gloves on at the time due to it being 25 degrees out so maybe thats why. my buddy eventually switched it out for an after market. some people love them. maybe if i shot it under different conditions i would too.

I always change out my springs for the Accutrigger. I basically turn mine into a target trigger, and I absolutely love the things!! It is seriously the best factory trigger out there to play with. Once you get used to them, you will love them!!

Re: Looking for savage action?

There is a repeater target action that Jim Briggs sells. My friend bought one and it has no problems floating a 30 inch bull barrel. It is significantly more rigid.
