Any body own one? I can get a really good deal on a 4-16x50 model and would like to know more about them.

Judging on features alone without knowing your intended use, and this is just my opinion, for the price, there are many other options out there with better features. Such as; better reticles, mil/mil adjustments, and illumination.
Never had the desire to use one (the Nikon), so I cant speak for the quality.
But for that price...I (personally) would look at Vortex, SWFA, Leupold, Weaver, Bushnell...

MWM--I agree with some of your statements. I have (or still) own(ed) Nikon Monarchs, Buckmasters, Prostaff, a dedicated Nikon turkey scope and a Nikon Slughunter model. IMHO, Nikon is a fine product for it's intended use. I have owned Leupold, Vortex and various Bushnell scopes too. Nikon is definately a "niche" scope in the fact the manufacturer hasn't jumped on the present FFP craze and produced new models in the last few years. The tactical model in the OP hasn't changed for years. I have had the opportunity to shoot one and if given a chance at a second hand scope, I would certainly pick it up. It isn't a Nightforce, S&B, IOR or Premier, but it doesn't pretend to be one. Optics are what you can afford. I would love to own a "premium high end" scope, but I cannot rationalize the cost. I didn't mean to "p**s" on your parade or offend anyone, but optics are best suited not only to your individual needs and especially your own budget. Just my .02$

I have a couple of the older 2.5-10 "tactical" pre X and had a 4-16 not to long ago. They are solid scopes. Just have not kept up with the times, Mil with MOA adjustments. Glass in the ones I have had has been as good or better than the Mk4's I have had. They have always tracked and held there zero.

I taught BRM in the Army for 15 years, but we all know that an M-16A1 does not come with a scope. But I recently bought a custom 308 and put this scope on it and it ROCKS! I've read all the post on FFL's and Matching turrets and I can see where that would be useful. But military and LE snipers have been using SFP and non matching turrets for years and killin' everything in sight. So if you like the scope buy it, you won't be sorry. If you want a scope with FFP and matching turrets buy it, you won't be sorry. I will admit that I am printing everything I can find on how to use the reticle, But like I say "I'm not a scope guy", but I will figure it out and when I do I expect to hear lots of "Pings" at the range and put lots of back strap in the freezer.

Gonna be a casual target shooter and deer hunting rifle. Not concerned with matching turrets/reticle. retail: 1399.00. My wifes price through photography business she works at.....$892.00 shipped. 36% off retail= SOLD! cant shoot more than 200 yds where I hunt anyway.

For your purposes I would ask her if she can get a Zeiss Conquest at a discount. It will have glass as nice as scopes twice the money.

I had a few of these..... Paid 450-550.00 for them used. For that price they are worth it. Better scopes can be had for the same money. Vortex and weaver are putting out a great product for under 1k.

I have the Monarch X 4-16x50 with MilDot and have had tracking problems since I've bought it three years ago. Bought it new in an auction through eBay so that could be the problem but still uncertain. From what is says on paper the scope is fantastic, it has everything a distance shooter needs on a budget. I will be selling my Monarch though and looking into the Zeiss conquest line, probably the 6-24x50 Rapid Z 1000.

I have the Monarch and The Monarch X in 4-16 both with MIL DOT. Hrndymax send it back if there is an issue they will repair it. I have my X mounted on a custom 10/22 that I shoot out to 200yds. I have never had any issues with tracking for return to zero. Clear glass but yes they are expensive. I have the Conquest as well on my 17 and its another great scope. My only complaint with the Conquest is the turrets. Aside from that the glass is pretty hard to beat. Either way you go both are a great choice.

They aren't bad scopes but they aren't worth $892. For that price there are much better options as others pointed out. I would do a little more reasearch before you make a mistake you will probably regret. I can tell you that you will never be able to resell a moa/duplex nikon for anywhere close to what you paid for it, you would probably be lucky to get $500-600 out of it.

True Nikons for some reason never sell used. An old Leupold is gone in minutes. Weird.

It doesn't so much have to do with brand as it does features of the scope. Leupold may hold it's value a little better than a nikon over all but a leupold "tactical" scope with moa knobs and duplex reticle would still drop like a rock in resale too, a moa/mil leupold wouldn't be a whole lot better but it would hold a little more. Right now the demand is mil/mil scope. If you watch the market you will notice a lot of the high end stuff that is in high demand will sell for their new prices or more if you bought it at the right time. At most they drop 10% in value, even the low to middle price range mil/mil scopes drop 20% at most. MOA/MOA scopes hold their value decently too but not as well as mil/mil and they also don't sell as well.

I have sent out the scope once before and they did a collimation adjustment and still hasn't performed. I know Vortex scopes are nice for their price but I am still very unsure of buying a scope manufactured OR assembled overseas, unless of course it is German glass.
