Hi everyone I am new to this and I am looking to purchase a long range rifle. After reading different ballistics I have chosen the 300 win mag caliber. Now I need to choose the rifle. So far I have narrowed it down to the Tikka T3 Tactical, Howa Legacy Target Master, and the Remington 700 SPS Long Range model. Right now I have a Remington 700 ADL .308 and shoot at 300 yards. My spending on the rifle alone is $1000 max. I would really like to spend about $800 for the rifle so I have more for optics. I am buying the Leupold Mark 4 6.5x20x50. So if anyone has experience with these rifles please post. Also if you have suggestions on other rifles as well.

Re: What rifle to buy.

You don't need a magnum. Spend the money to do a PR class a Rifles Only and learn to shoot your .308 at 'long range'.

Re: What rifle to buy.

Before you jump to magnum, I would just start stretching out with your 308. Or maybe re-barrel to a 260 or 6.5 Creed. Unless you just want another rifle.

Re: What rifle to buy.

Out of the 3 you mentioned I would go Tikka, than Howa and finally Remington. I have 2 howas myself and both have been heavily modified. They both shoot great. I fondled a tikka at a gunstore and liked the fact that it came with the sako brake, a bipod, and a Burris scope. It looked like a real nice starter package. I handled the 20" and felt it was extremely light, I was not worried about any recoil though because of the effectiveness of the sako brake.

I agree with the other posters about dropping the magnum idea and sticking with a .308.

You also might want to think about putting a heavier profile barrel on your ADL .308 and shooting the crap out of that before you decide to go bigger.

Re: What rifle to buy.

You should take a look at the Remington 700 Sendero. They can be had for just a tad north of 1K. I have one in 7mag and it's a seriously accurate rifle. I did a quick search on gunbroker and found a bunch of them.

agreed on the comment about the savage. best bang for your buck. i shoot the 110BA in .300wm and love it, shoots much better than i can.

3 shot group 100yds 1st time to the range with it after initial zero. savage does a fine job with out of the box accuracy in my opinion.

Re: What rifle to buy.

Agreed that this gun (Savage 110)is a great value and in the 308 option gives you an even better buy. The ammo will be more available than the other choice. If your looking something that can get you out there 175 SMK's will do the trick. Another point I'd like to add is look around for glass out there besides leupold. I got a mark 2 mildot and its ok but Im now wanting something in FFP.

Re: What rifle to buy.

308's can go out pretty long. Why do you want a new rifle?

The Savage 300WM is good IMHO.

Re: What rifle to buy.

thanks for the comments. I will look into the savage. I wanted another rifle for heavy range shooting. I want to use my 308 for hunting. A friend of mine is trying to get me into hunting so I want a rifle for each purpose. I had thought about just buying a heavy barrel and making the platform I have now into the perfect rifle, but after adding up the price of all the things I wanted to change on the rifle I thought I would be better off buying a rifle with what I want already assembled. One thing I loved about the Tikka is the jeweled bolt and how smooth it is. Thanks again.
