What kind of accuracy(or lack thereof)can I expect from shooting 62gr.tracers from an ar-15 with a 16 in,1-9 twist barrel?I've got a bunch and would like to play with them, but inaccurate rounds aren't any fun.

    Re: shooting tracers

I got my dope on some 147gners for my 7.62 and they were consistent enough I was doing pretty decent on targets @ 1K with them.

    Re: shooting tracers

When I've shot them out of my 1:9 16" AR I've gotten probably about 3MOA out of them, I was shooting for fun offhand not accuracy/groups. Watch out for dry conditions over the whole area, I've had the phospherous charge has come out and fly off in random directions before both in flight and after impact.

    I am the one shooting

    Re: shooting tracers

I've burned all of the hair off of my legs and got burns around my ankles with them.

That said, most are fairly consistent. A few do strange things.

    Re: shooting tracers

1-9 will not properly stabilize the 62 grain tracers.
The 1-7 twist barrel was specified because the 62 grain tracers are so long.
If you want to shoot tracers, pick up some of the older 55 grain ones.

    Re: shooting tracers

Roger that. A 62gr NATO tracer is a very long projectile, since it doesn't have the same density as lead.

They are the reason behind 1/7 twist as stated above, which is really for some of the 80gr and longer VLD-type pills with long bearing surfaces.

If you live anywhere out West, it's best to avoid shooting them out in dry conditions. Utah had at least 5 large brush fires started by shooters this year, resulting in loss of people's homes, evacuations of certain neighborhoods, and $$$$ damage.

Almost every belt-fed weapon range session in the military during dry months resulted in range fires, some of which included loss of life by foreign nationals who tried to fight one particular fire in the hills/mountains of Korea.

    Re: shooting tracers

5.56 tracers are next to worthless in bright daylight. 7.62 puts off a much brighter trace.
Here is a vid I made shooting nasty Talon 7.62 trace.

    Re: shooting tracers

Thanks for the info fellas.I'll usually try just about anything once, but there is no sense wasting ammo.I'll either try to trade what I have or get a 1-7 twist barreled upper.

    Re: shooting tracers

Be sure the range you're shooting them at allows them. None of the ranges around here, indoors or outdoors, allow them. Outdoor ranges I can understand, we dont want any more grass fires.
