A friend of mine asked me if I knew of any companies that actually make all stainless steel trigger units for Savages because he wants to keep his rifle on his sailboat and is concerned about corrosion.

Are there any companies that make an all stainless steel adjustable trigger unit for Savages?

Savage stainless steel accutriggers are not fully stainless steel.

Re: All Stainless Steel Trigger Unit?

Probably not but can't say for sure.

Practically live in the sea though, but on land too as long as there you're close to the sea and the air is salty corrosion is still a bitch.
Have some shotguns that have been exposed to salt water allot.
The corrosion is not bad though still.

Cerakote on all exposed metal parts, is a good start, as stainless steel corrodes quite badly too.

Never put the gun away if it has been exposed to salt water, clean it if used and pull a patch with some suiting oil through the barrel always.
I usually clean off all metal with a moist piece of cloth, to get away the salt, dry it off, let it hang for some hours to dry up properly and apply oil before i store them away.
The triggers i usually apply a type of crc to.

So if he takes the time to take care of his gun properly corrosion should not be a problem.

As for storage get something that's properly waterproof, a padded rifle case would be the best, been enough at sea to see how vibration and force from waves can affect bolts and screws etc.

Re: All Stainless Steel Trigger Unit?

I could be wrong but I thought that stainless is too soft for trigger engagement surfaces. He could probaly take the trigger components and have them melonited or something like that. From what I understand that's pretty resistent to corrosion. Gotta remember that oil is a guns best friend, well right behind me and ammo.

Re: All Stainless Steel Trigger Unit?

I've always heard to not oil the trigger group...just to clean with lighter fluid fwiw.

Re: All Stainless Steel Trigger Unit?

I would make an exception in this case

Have you ever oiled a Savage trigger?

Re: All Stainless Steel Trigger Unit?

Well i use lighter fluid to clean the triggers.
Have also heard tat you should not use anything else for triggers,
But still get a bit of crc witch is meant for electronics, done this for the last 15 years on some weapons and i have not found it harmful at least.
I do not own a Savage though.

Quite clearly if you expose you're weapon to salt water, it will naturally find it's way into the trigger too sometimes, and if it gets to dry up i do not trust a bit of lighter fluid to remove it, and if the internals of you're trigger starts rusting you will experience problems sooner or later.

Re: All Stainless Steel Trigger Unit?

I would use a light oil, and keep the gun in a breatheable padded case. Boyt makes some nice ones. For oil I would use Gunzilla or M-Pro 7.
