I host a multigun match and a friend and I are looking to start some precision rifle matches. What rule do you guys use, scoring etc. We have access to a 420 yard range and I have an assortment of MGM steel targets. Never been to one of these matches and frankly have no clue of what is involved.

Get a hold of Vu here on the hide, he has been a great help to me in trying to get something started here in Billings.

Re: Looking to start some matches

Good job on taking this on bro. There aren't enough people willing to step up.

I would be happy to share how we do things if you are interested. We are running a UKD match this Saturday in fact.

The most difficult thing is to find a scoring system that lets the super-ninja distinguish himself, but still lets Joe Schmuckatelli (the regular guys who pay for it all) still put points on the scoreboard.

For instance, we would have a stage where a shooter has to break a colored balloon at 400 yards. They may use up to 5 rounds. The scoring would be:

75 points for the hit

5 points for each unfired round

So the ninja hits it first round and gets a 95 (I keep all stages at ~100 points)

The greenhorn takes 5 rounds to hit it, but he does, and gets 75. They know they aren't going to win, but they want to HIT the target.

The IMPORTANT thing is, the greenhorn will come back again. If you send them home with a page full of zeroes, they won't.

Ninja's like it because the scores at the top are always VERY tight. They cannot slack off at all.

Stages are actually pretty easy to come up with. The talent of a match director begins to show when you have stages that flow quickly and smoothly from one to the other, and the down time in between is very short. Think about the order of stages, how they reset, and what targets they use.

...Overlap targets from one stage to another. Double their usefulness.

...Arrange stages fired on paper in between steel ones. Get everyone shooting at the same time on these. Coordinate paper target changes such that multiple stages are changed at once. If you go cold, the use of that time has to be maximized.

Shooters want challenging stages that represent the skill sets used by LE and Military snipers.

Keep the atmosphere friendly and inclusive.

The best way to improve your match once you get off the ground is to listen carefully to the shooters' suggestions. Remember - they are paying to be there.

Re: Looking to start some matches

Go to the ICORE websie, they have tons of stages you can modify a bit to add rifles.

Also think about getting a Texas Star. They are a huge draw to get more shooters. Fun and challenging.

Re: Looking to start some matches

Get a hold of Tom Sarver at Thunder Valley... I started going there 3-4 yrs ago and was made to feel welcome right from the start.... I think his deal with having the newbie days is a real draw to get new shooters to show up....

Hit me up in PM with your email and I will forward you all of our match stuff. Tweak as needed to fit your range, needs, and safety protocols.

I'll be pretty busy for the next 40 days or so, but after TBRC I will gladly discuss anything you have questions on to give you an idea on how we do things out here. It's not a perfect system, but works well for us.

Guys, I have had the same thought, and feel there is a "market" for a field rifle match here in the Billings area.

I have talked a little with the YRC president about holding a match at on the silhouette range. It is going to take some time to ease the old guard into letting us shoot over & under barricades, out of cars, etc. These old guys have been shooting high power, benchrest, etc. on a square range for years and this not something that they have been exposed to.

Vu, has shared some great information with me and I feel that I am on the right track on getting something going.

Now here comes the fun part, my wife and I just had a baby boy a couple of months ago so I have put this on the back burner for now. If any of you want to help me out wit this that would be great. The time, money & resources are too much for just me to handle for something like this. My thought is to get the ground work in place before I start recruiting people.

If you guys are serious about helping getting something going please contact me via email by the address in my profile.

Re: Looking to start some matches

I've thought about doing the same thing at my local range. They currently have a "long range rifle shoot" but it is not exactly what I had in mind. Not wrong, just different. They shoot off of benches or prone to varying distances out to our maximum of 400 yards. Basically a cross between benchrest and tactical precision rifle.

My only hangup is how that will work on such a short range. We have berms set at standard distances, so UKD targets would be difficult--locals would have a distinct advantage. There's always the Know Your Limits stage, but I've struggled coming up with enough stages on a small range to make it worth the while.

Anyone else host monthly matches on small ranges? How do you get around some of these issues?

Re: Looking to start some matches

Easy peasy.

Get some smaller size steel poppers and use them at 200, 300 and 400Y. Have people hit them from a variety of different positions. Mix up paper and steel together at different distances. Shoot off barricades, off the posts, run a drag dummy drill... heartbreaker drills, shoot at some balloons....hostage/badguy targets, KIMS games, get a vehicle involved - shoot under, over and around it... shoot at playing cards hanging from a string....

You could run an extremely kickass match with 400Y and a few pieces of reactive or swingin' steel.
