Re: Looking to start some matches
Good job on taking this on bro. There aren't enough people willing to step up.
I would be happy to share how we do things if you are interested. We are running a UKD match this Saturday in fact.
The most difficult thing is to find a scoring system that lets the super-ninja distinguish himself, but still lets Joe Schmuckatelli (the regular guys who pay for it all) still put points on the scoreboard.
For instance, we would have a stage where a shooter has to break a colored balloon at 400 yards. They may use up to 5 rounds. The scoring would be:
75 points for the hit
5 points for each unfired round
So the ninja hits it first round and gets a 95 (I keep all stages at ~100 points)
The greenhorn takes 5 rounds to hit it, but he does, and gets 75. They know they aren't going to win, but they want to HIT the target.
The IMPORTANT thing is, the greenhorn will come back again. If you send them home with a page full of zeroes, they won't.
Ninja's like it because the scores at the top are always VERY tight. They cannot slack off at all.
Stages are actually pretty easy to come up with. The talent of a match director begins to show when you have stages that flow quickly and smoothly from one to the other, and the down time in between is very short. Think about the order of stages, how they reset, and what targets they use.
...Overlap targets from one stage to another. Double their usefulness.
...Arrange stages fired on paper in between steel ones. Get everyone shooting at the same time on these. Coordinate paper target changes such that multiple stages are changed at once. If you go cold, the use of that time has to be maximized.
Shooters want challenging stages that represent the skill sets used by LE and Military snipers.
Keep the atmosphere friendly and inclusive.
The best way to improve your match once you get off the ground is to listen carefully to the shooters' suggestions. Remember - they are paying to be there.
