Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

hi with a 284 and H4831 the powder i have always used start with 54gr and a 175gr MatchKing or 175gr Berger and work from there 54gr is a great starting load and has been accurate in every 284 we have built i am sure you will be happy just get Lapua 284 cases neck them up and start shooting the case is so well ballanced it does not seem to matter what primer you use i hses CCI standard match and mag aswell as fed standard, standard match and mag match and all of them would have the same average velocity it is just a realy well ballanced case.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

i'm right there with wild bill on powder and charge weight. i run 54.5 grains of h4831sc, winchester brass, 175 smk seated to 3.1" oal and a br2 primer. i am around 2830 fps with a 27" barrel. it is very accurate and works in all conditions i have shot in from 110* to well bellow freezing.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

54.5 H4831SC in necked-up Lapua brass with a BR2 primer and 180VLDs to the lands is a good place to start:
http://www.6mmbr.com/7mm284.html

Just remember that what shoots best for you at 100 won't necessarily shoot the best at 1000.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

My rifle should be done this week. I am really excited to go shoot. Any more loads I should give a try???

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Just picked up a 284... Can not find any brass. Is everbody necking up 6.5x284 brass? Does any body know where to find some? Thanks, Javy.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Here is my final load work up.
Hot load. I started at 51 grs.

Lapua brass neck up
Br2 primers
RL-17 powder 54.8 grs
180 JLKs
Coal 3.177

32" Brux barrel 9 twist 1.350 straight. Reamer made to my specs. Gun weight 21.8 pds.

High 3073
low 3069
Avg 3071
ES 4
Sd 2.1

Shot today and confirm data at 600 yards. The come ups was 9 moa. Shoots like a house on fire.

I have one more to work on load development. I hope it is as good as this one.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Anybody have any new data for the 284? I have a barrel on the way now and am looking for some data to stock up on components. I decided to build on a SA as this is a hunting rifle and all I was looking for was apprx 150 fps faster than what the 7-08 could give me. I had a SA so I am going with it. I will be feeding from Alpha Mags so I can seat out to 2.985" Really hoping I can get the 162 A-max up around 2950+ Plan to do the first round of tests with RL17 and Alliant's new 2000MR.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

52.0 RE17. Lapua brass necked-up to 7mm, 180JLK VLD, CCI BR2. At the lands (3.116 OAL with a .139 Freebore) it gives me 2840fps from a 25" bbl at 70F. As accurate as any of my H4831SC loads, but with 65fps more velocity.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

I was using 49.0 grains of RL17 with a SIE 175 in mine, till I switched to the 7mm Saum

We are just finishing up a second build for another BV shooter, he plans on using R-17 so we can compare apples to apples. Only difference will be powder, his barrel is a 28" Kreiger, and he is running a FTE break instead of a can for now.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Lapua 6.5-284, necked-up, then full-length sized
Berger 180gr VLD PN: 28405
Reloder 17 (RE17 / RL17) & CCI BR2 primer
COAL ~3.14"

50.5gr - 2866fps
50.0gr - 2841fps, 2852fps, 2874fps on 3 different sessions (avg 2855fps)

Long-action AICS 2.0. Accurate Mag 300 Win magazine holds 6rds nicely.

I also loaded up some Berger 180gr Hybrid Target (PN: 28407) @ ~3.19" COAL, 50 / 50.5 / 51gr RL17 & Winchester 284 brass but I haven't shot them yet.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

I started having sticky bolt lift and some shiny spots on my brass with the 51gr load. Backed off to 50.5gr, and saw it there as well.

I ran a Boresnake through it, and that seemed to help. Later I thoroughly cleaned the barrel and chamber. That seemed to help AND tightened up my groups.

I think I might have a little sizing wax left on my brass. I wiped-down some loaded rounds with acetone and I'm going to clean the barrel and chamber again and see what happens.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

I still haven't figured out what's going on. I'll have a couple rounds that are fine, then one with sticky bolt lift and shiny spots on the brass.

Here are some numbers from today. The sun was going down fast, so I'm not sure I can trust them. I was getting the little "*" on several readings.

First shots of the day:

50gr RL17
High - 2815
Low - 2769 (cold bore after cleaning)
ES - 46
M - 2798
SD - 18

Again:

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Michael,

4831SC really shines in my rifle, single digit ES/SD's. Give it a try. Using Winchester brass, gave up on necked up Lapua brass, developed severe donuts after 2-3 firings.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Yep, that's exactly where I'm headed (H4831sc).

I kind of waffled between the Lapua & Winchester. I wound up with 100+500 of Winchester 284 and then 100+500 of Lapua brass (two different lots of each).

I've got about 15lbs of RL17 left, so I was <span style="font-weight: bold">really</span> trying to make it work.
--

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

I have some H4350, so I tried that today.

50.7gr H4350, Berger 180gr Hybrid @ ~3.19", CCI BR2, Lapua brass. 30" barrel.

High - 2802
Low - 2792
ES - 10
M - 2796
SD - 4

20mph winds, gusting to 30mph, so I didn't even try and shoot any groups.
--

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Michael do you think about 53gr of H4350 will start to compress the load, and be pretty close to max?

H4831 SC and the 176 Cauterucio's 56gr is absolute max for my rifle, pressure shows on case head for sure with stiff bolt lift - One round was enough to call it
wink.gif
. Seated to about the same length. Pressure curve begins to show on the chrony around 55.5gr.

At 55gr I'm getting an average of 2805 for 10rds. in a 28" Benchmark barrel.

I'll tune this load down between 54.5gr and 55gr but looking to try H4350. Honestly mid to upper 2700-ish is perfectly acceptable and easier on the throat with these, if I wanted more velocity on demand with the heavies it's probably smarter to go with something like the 7 SAUM.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

What twist are you guys running in your .284's? I'm probably gonna run the Berger 180's and the 175smk's?? Thanks!!!

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

1:9 will work, though given the choice, I'd prefer a 1:8.5

Don't forget Berger is supposed to be coming out with a new 195gr 7mm bullet, which allegedly will require 1:8.5

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

In my rifle 53grs of 4350 would be over max, I start to get primers leaks and other hight pressure signs at 51.5 on some rounds so I backed mine off to 51.2 and it works great getting 2850+/-7 out of a 30.25 kreiger barrel with 180smk's. Much more consistant and accurate than r17 for me.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Finally got a good load for my rifle.

Rifle
Pierce short Action, 30inch Bartlien Barrel 1x9 twist, Eliseo RTS chassis.
I single load for F-open. My bullets are way to long for feed from AICS mag.

Win Brass/lightly neck turned
Berger 180 Hybrids
55.5g 4831SC
BR-2 Primer
Seated .05 out of the lands
With the Hornaday tool it measures: 3.536
2832 AV FPS
ES 14 SD 6

Groups averaged from .2 to .5 @100 yds.

I had no pressure signs. I also found that there was only about a .3g sweet spot (55.4 to 55.6). At 55.2 and 55. 8 the groups opened up quite a bit.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Well, I can finally add to this thread... I put 550(!!!!!) rounds through my first barrel before finally throwing in the towel. I damn near quit at 200, but it printed a group that showed promise...so I chased it around for another 100-150 rounds, almost quit, but then chased some other ideas.

That barrel sucked.

Fresh barrel is on, wouldn't print worse than 1/2-3/4 moa with anything, EXCEPT amaxs. Don't know WTF is up with those, but between 4 different 7mms, I've only had one barrel that would shoot them worth a shit. Bummer, cause they are a LOT of BC for the dollar.

So, when testing 162amax in your 284, load these 20 rounds and try them. If none of these group well, QUIT CHASING, and give up on them!

5 rounds of each:

162/51.5gr H4350 on the lands 162/51.5gr H4350 .040 off

162/55.5gr H4831sc on the lands 162/55.5gr H4831sc .040 off

If none of those absolutely hammer, give up. None of these are "hot" high pressure loads, but perform your own due diligence before firing them in your chamber.

Next up, my current load workup:

FN SPR (short action)
.317" neck, .088" free ore
Winny cases
29.25" (recoil lug to crown) 8.5 twist non-5R Krieger

54.8gr H4831sc
175smk
2.950" COAL (Casehead to meplat)

Using G1BC=.64 (Litz's BC) and MV of 2875fps lines up perfect at 600 yards, but haven't run them over the chrono.

This load bugholes at 200 yards, and printed a 1.5" group at 600.

Any charge of H4831sc under the 175smk gave 1/2+ moa groups, but 54.5 tightened up, 54.8 hammers, and 55.1 opened a bit.

55.7 or 56 seems to be nodal as well, but my primers begin cratering pretty good at 56.6, and the velocity at 54.8 seems damn fine, so I don't think I'm gonna push.

Now, trying to decide how much, if any to chop my barrel down...this is supposed to be a tactical rifle, not a belly bench rest f class rifle.

Just a followup note on this...

The 54.8gr loading absolutely grouped tigher than other charges +/- just .2gr.

I finished my 1 pound bottle of H4831sc and bought 3 more (of two different lot numbers), mixed them all together in an empty 8lb powder jug, and had to re-develop the load for sure.

The new "node" is 55gr rather than 54.8 - and it's the difference between 5/8 moa and a 3/8" bughole at 200 yards.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Nice to see the thread getting populated.

Update for mine,
I shot the first match with my .284 and was very impressed with the way the 180 hybrids bucked the wind. Well until I seen Ballards new 7mm (Ballard) shoot. That thing was like a damn rocket going out to the 1000 yard target.

I had very little vertical difference and didn't have to hold off near as much as I would for the 6.5 at 1k. I would say the recoil isn't bad either but the gun weight is 19.4 pounds, so that makes a bit of a difference.

I have around 350 rounds through the barrel. I did have to dial down some elevation at the match, I need to get it back over the crono and see if the barrel has sped up now that it's broke in.

I can say that overall I'm very very impressed with the .284. I just wish that berger wasn't so darn proud of the 180g hybrids.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Savage PTA, 30" Benchmark 3 groove 1:9 twist barrel, SAAMI chamber:

Lapua case, lightly turned to remove donut, annealed after every firing
Berger 180gr Hybrid
56.3gr H4831SC
Wolf LR Primer
0.001-0.0015" neck tension
0.030" jump (chamber throated to keep boattail junction just at/above neck-shoulder junction)
2870fps or so.

This is a warm load in my rifle, 57.0 is a max load in my gun and gives me heavy bolt lift.

Also, I have 1250 rounds through the barrel and have not changed seating depth. "Chasing the lands" made the guns shoot worse.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

SAC built 284 LA

52.7 grains of H4350 (as high as I could go before sticky bolt)
168 VLD (.317 G7) loaded 2.465 to the ogive
Lapua brass/Federal GMM primers
2885 fps *across 8 shots
ES: 23
SD: 9

sub 1/4 min at 100 yds

7.3 mils to 1000 yds

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

54.0gr H4831sc
175smk @ 2.950" COAL
28.25" Krieger

This seems to be a moderate load, bugholes @ 200 yards, and JBM is spot on out to at least 1220 yards using Litz BC and 2800fps.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

I settled on 52.5 grains of RE17 to push the 168 VLD up to 2935 fps. This gave me the best velocities (ES/SD) without stressing the brass too much. I was running H4350 but could not get to 2900 fps (2885) without over-pressure and 58.8 grains of 4831sc really stressed the brass. I am going to try the 180 VLD's in October.
