Just picked a Mosin from a buddy who needed cash badly so I grabbed it for 75.00.
Now I'm trying to figure out what it's worth, what do the markings tell me etc....
Let me know if there are any key markings or anything I should look for that would help me understand exactly what I have.

Thanks in advance
Derrick

Re: Mosin Nagant help

I would move your post to the vintage forum. There are some folks who can tell you if you post a picture of the markings.

Odds are, the gun is worth $75, but they are cheap and fun to shoot.

These links are to id and rarity of the MN rifles. If he sold it for $75 its more than likely a rearsenaled Tula or Izhevsk 91/30, The most common is the Izhevsk, round receiver war time 1935-1944. Most of the "Izzy" rounds go for $79 online and $10 more for the Tula, with shipping they are about the same as Big 5 prices, $99-$179.

The website will help you id, if you have an "ex-sniper", or a carbine (M44, M38, M53, M91/59), these start at about $149-$175)

Either way, $75 is a pretty fair price(considering you dont hav e to pay shipping or transfer fee), especially if it is in original condition ,with the sling, bayonet, and the tools it came with.

If it has been sporterized or bubba'd, it is worth about a balogna sandwich and a cup of kool-aid, Fried balogna if its a Tula.

+1 to the other comments. However, you also have to understand that when people are telling you that $75 is a fair or "market" price, that's probably not a perfectly clear assessment, since most will wholesale for around $79-$99. Many of the people who collect them will have a C&R FFL and can purchase them at that price. In a retail setting, they usually sell for more. Around here, it's $129-$159, with the occasional sale price of $99, if you happen to luck out. It depends on your locale.

Get some good pics and post them in the vintage section, or PM me. Then we can figure out exactly what you have. In any case, I think you probably did very well.

Re: Mosin Nagant help

I picked up one up here in Utah - retail was $99.00. If you're really looking to make some money, clean out all the 70 year-old Russian cosmolene, strip the linseed-oil finish, and refinish the stock and really bring out the beauty in that old Russki wood!

I refinished my stock, coated it in a water-proof polymer coating and sold it for around $175. I may have gotten lucky with the sale, but it was a fun project nonetheless.
