Ok guys, I'd like to build my rifle but rather than posting up questions every other day I'm going to put it to ya's like this. You've got a savage model 10 chambered in .308 you want to use as a starting platform. If you can do whatever you wanted to it what would YOU do?

Here's mine..

Re: Savage model 10 in .308 build questions

What I would do with that rifle is different than what YOU would do.

The most important question to ask yourself is "What do I want the rifle to be?"

Long range paper/steel puncher?
Lightweight hunting rig?
Short-barreled truck gun?
Multipurpose do-all "practical rifle"?
Dedicated benchrest rifle?

What caliber do you want it to be? Do you want to keep it a 308 or switch to a 6/6.5/7mm? Do you reload, or want a caliber you can buy factory ammo anywhere?

If that Model 10 were my only centerfire, and I needed/desired a single "do-all" rifle that utilized factory ammo, here is what *I* would do.

Manners MCS-T, 90% carbon, CDI DBM
Criterion 22" light varmint contour prefit barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor
Weaver 20MOA base, Burris 30mm XTR low rings, Weaver 3-15x50 EMDR

YMMV, caveat emptor, etc...

Re: Savage model 10 in .308 build questions

Krieger Rem Varmint Contour 1-8 twist
Chambered in 6.5 creedmoor
Holland Muzzle Brake
Heavy duty recoil lug from sharp shooter supply
Mcmillian A5 stock
CDI Bottom Metal
Warne or talley 1 piece base with 20 moa
Burris extreme tactical rings, lows
Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP

This is what I would do. Would be an extremely accurate rifle that is still very packable without any recoil.

Hahaha ^ he raced to that one coldbore! Hollowpoint, ill chip in when i get home and not on my cell phone.

Re: Savage model 10 in .308 build questions

Everyone is going to have a different opinion. BoilerUP had a good point "what do YOU want the rifle to be and be able to do?" Once you answer that you can move forward and decide on the parts you need.

If you want I could take the gun off your hands so it won't be a hassle

Re: Savage model 10 in .308 build questions

...I would give it to me for a very low price.

In all seriousness, you can do whatever the hell you want with it. It's a Savage, the AR15 of the bolt action world. If you tell us what YOU want out of it, we can help you work out the specifics of a build, if you'd like.

And to answer your question in less smart-ass form, I have a Savage build pending right now. That's what I'd do to it. McMillan A5 stock, 6XC heavy weight barrel. Look for my thread for specifics.

Re: Savage model 10 in .308 build questions

I guess knowing what I intend to do with it would help.. lol. Well I intend on using it as a hunting rifle during open season. BUT during the off season I'd like to get into doing some long range shooting. My club just opened the range up from 150 yrds to 600 yrds so that'll be my max distance for now.

Multipurpose rifle...got it.

Now that the use is defined, the next questions are:
1. Do you reload?
2. Even if you do reload, is widely available factory ammo a requirement or simply a bonus?
3. What's your budget?

Funds permitting, I'd build such a rifle exactly as I described upthread.

If funds DONT permit that, I'd substitute in a Weaver GS Tactical 3-10x40 optic and 1" XTR low rings which will still serve you well in a multipurpose role.

If you wanted to stay 308, you could skip the Criterion and instead buy a ER Shaw 20" threaded barrel from Midway.

You could omit the CDI DBM and run the rifle with the blind magazine, just as it is from the factory.

And if a Manners or McMillan stock is too rich for your blood, you could use a Bell & Carlson Duramaxx (assuming your short action is staggerfeed with 4.27" bolt spacing...out of luck if its 4.4" centerfeed).

Re: Savage model 10 in .308 build questions

Ok as of now I do not reload so keeping with the .308 makes ammo readily available and "fairly" cheap. As for my budget, I intend to prob do a lil at a time so thats not a majoe concern. However I don't plan on sinking 5k into it that's for sure. I definitely want a nice stock and optics though

Re: Savage model 10 in .308 build questions

First thing I would do is up-grade to One piece picatinney rail and quality rings. I would also get a better scope, probably a SS 10x42, with mil turrets. Then I would shoot and ask questions, and shoot some more. Maybe get behind a few different stocks at the range to see if you like one better than the rest. See about taking a precision rifle course, or sign up for the online course here. Read...Shoot! See what you like, try it, sell it... Try something else... It is a game that will not ever end, you will always be up-grading, but it's a lot of fun!

Ya, he had like 80 post's in 2.5 days, he got a 10 day vacation. But he told me he does have something to sell.

+1 shoot the piss out of it for now and learn your basics!

Then after the above mods are done I would do stock first, bottom metal, and then a new barrel in a 6.5 Creedmoor.

308 is fine for the ranges you have now.

But start looking at getting into reloading! It will give to twice the trigger time as buy factory loads plus opens you up to more calibers.

Re: Savage model 10 in .308 build questions

If it were me . . .

I'd start by swapping out the barrel for a varmint contour. While you're swapping barrels, replace the factory recoil lug with one from Sharp Shooter Supply. I'd put a conservative sniper-style stock on it since you'll be hunting with it. Bed the action once you get the stock. One-piece base and quality rings. SWFA SS 3-9 or 10X to top it all off.

Re: Savage model 10 in .308 build questions

How does it shoot as is??

I can't tell what scope that is, but it looks cheesy.

Buy a good scope and mounting arrangement, and shoot it.
If it doesn't shoot so good, stick a criterion barrel in 308 on it, and shoot it.

That is all.

Re: Savage model 10 in .308 build questions

Honestly I haven't put one round through it yet. I picked it up used for $300 and then I noticed the stock had cracked between the two action screws. So that being said I didn't want to chance anything and ripped it apart. I definitely need to replace the stock but anything else is just a bonus at this point.
