It must be the week of dumb questions for me...

For you guys with bolt guns that run magazines, what's your preferred size? ...5 or 10 rounds? I just got my McRee last week and I need to order a couple mags.

Re: Magazine size?

It all really depends on what your application will be, are you going to be using it for hunting, target or a tactical rifle competition? For me I usualy use a 5 round magazine while hunting, but use higher volume magazines for targets/tactical rifle competitions. Also, magazine consideration should taken into account on what caliber your running with. Hope this helps.

Re: Magazine size?

I would have one two 5rd mags and several 10rd.

The 5rd mag allows a relatively flush, unencumbered bottom when that is appropriate and ammunition volume (as with hunting) is not at a premium.

When you need more ammo, you're probably going to want multiple mags of it.

Re: Magazine size?

It's a .308 and will be exclusively target shooting, for now. I was worried that 10 round might be too long and get in the way on a bench or when shooting prone. On the other hand, I like the idea of not having to reload as often.

Re: Magazine size?

With your situation, I would buy 1-2 5 round magazines for the lower profile as stated above or hunting if you choose; then also have a couple 10 round magazines for the additional ammunition volume they provide when target shooting. They shouldn't get in the way when shooting in the prone or on a bench.

Re: Magazine size?

I agree with the above, I have two 5 rounders and two 10 rounders with me most of the time for my bolt gun. I highly recommend spending the coin and buying Accuracy International Chassis System magazines and skipping the others.

Re: Magazine size?

When I bought my GAP Rock 18 months ago I ordered two each of the 5 and 10 round magazines. I have only used the 5 round magazines. One round at a time for slow fire. With the 10 round I starting rushing and lost the accuracy. I keep them with me just in case.

Re: Magazine size?

How about the 10rd Alpha mags? They're shorter than AICS 10rd mags, but longer than the AICS 5rd mags? Seems like the best of both worlds to me.

Re: Magazine size?

I prefer the Alpha mags myself. But with the issues everyone is having lately with customer service and delivery with them I will probably switch to AICS or McRee.

Re: Magazine size?

Definitely keep a 5 round mag handy. I took a precision rifle course recently, and the 10 rounder makes it hard to get into good low prone positions with bags, or when shooting off walls or other awkward stuff.

Re: Magazine size?

I run one 5 rounder and two 10 rounder, never needed more than that and single loading is pretty fast too if need be.

Well, I can't speak for everyone else, but I ordered two mags (.308 Type 2) last Thursday night. I got them in the mail via USPS Priority the following Monday (yesterday). I did not get a ship notice, though, so I was surprised when they showed up in my mailbox.
