Weapons sales by the United States tripled in 2011 to a record high, pumped up by $33.4 billion in sales to Saudi Arabia, but the international arms market is not likely to continue growing, according to a comprehensive new congressional report.

The United States sold $66.3 billion of weapons overseas in 2011, accounting for nearly 78 percent of all global arms sales, which rose to $85.3 billion in 2011, the highest level seen since 2004. The previous U.S. record was set in 2008, when arms sales reached $38.2 billion, measured in 2011 dollars.

“The extraordinary total value of U.S. weapons orders in 2011 distorts the current picture of the global arms trade market,” said the report by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service, calling $66.3 billion in U.S. arms sales “a clear outlier figure.”

While Washington remained the world’s leading arms supplier, nearly all other major suppliers, except France, saw declines in 2011, according to the annual report prepared for Congress.

France signed arms sales valued at $4.4 billion in 2011, up from $1.8 billion a year earlier, but Russia, the world’s number two arms dealer, saw its sales nearly halved to $4.8 billion in 2011. The four major European suppliers -- France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy -- saw their collective market share drop to 7.2 percent in 2011 from 12.2 percent a year earlier.

Saudi Arabia was the biggest arms buyer among developing countries, concluding $33.7 billion in weapons deals in 2011, followed by India with purchases of $6.9 billion and the United Arab Emirates with $4.5 billion.

Total annual global arms sales ranged between $42 billion and $67 billion in the period from 2004 to 2011, reaching a cumulative total of $467.9 billion in that 8-year period.

A weaker global economy, the European financial crisis and the slow international recovery from the recession of 2008 have dampened demand for new weapons, with many countries putting off or scaling back their purchases, the report found.

The report said some countries were focused more heavily on upgrading existing systems and support services, which remained “a rather lucrative” sector for weapons suppliers Washington, for instance, generates a steady stream of orders for upgrades, spare parts, ammunition and support services from year to year, even when it does not conclude big deals for new weapons systems, the report said.

Concerns about Iran continued to fuel arms sales to the Middle East and especially Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, but India, Taiwan and other Asian countries were important arms buyers as well, said the report, written by Richard Grimmett and Paul Kerr.

The report predicted increasingly intense competition between European nations and the United States for a small number of global orders in coming years.

It also noted that developing countries were demanding greater cost offsets in their arms contracts, access to more advanced technology and provisions allowing them to produce some weapons at home.

Key U.S. weapons sales in 2011 included:

- $33.4 billion to Saudi Arabia for 84 Boeing Co F-15 fighters, dozens of helicopters built by Boeing and Sikorsky Aircraft, a unit of United Technologies Corp,

- $3.49 billion for Lockheed Martin Corp’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, an advanced missile shield, to the United Arab Emirates, and $940 million for 16 Chinook helicopters built by Boeing,

- $1.4 billion for 18 F-16 fighter jets built by Lockheed Martin,

- a $4.1 billion agreement with India for 10 C-17 transport planes built by Boeing,

- and a $2 billion order by Taiwan for Patriot antimissile batteries.

Re: Please enjoy this war with Iran.

Personally, I think all the saber rattling and declarations of wartime readiness are playing directly into Iran's hands.

Iran wants to use a bomb. That could be difficult. But it doesn't need to be.

Everyone expects Isreal to attack, but that's not needed for the war to start, either.

Iran could set off a nuke within their own territory; then blame Isreal and appeal to their Muslim bretheren to eliminate Isreal on their behalf.

And they could.

...And the camel turned and said to the scorpion, "But why did you do that? Now we'll both die..."

Remember where it is that we're talking about.

I can't help but laugh at the guys that came on here and started preaching in favor of the Palestinians and how Israel came and stole their land. If you really think that how about you get off your fat ass and give your house/land back to the first Native American you come across. If not... Shut your mouth and quit being a hypocrite. At least they have history there.

As for the Biblical Apocalypse comment... If you see Israel move in and demolish the Dome of the Rock and start rebuilding Solomon's Temple it's time to start praying.

And that's all I got to say 'bout that.

Love it.

I have a similar reaction to people who drive around with all those bumper stickers on the back of their car with pro-environment [you really know anyone who is ANTI-environment?] pro-green, anti "big oil", pro-windpower, etc.

I want to make up a small placard I can hold up for them to read "Get out and walk!"

The "Coexist" stickers are funnier. I mean, how DO you "coexist" with a culture/political system that mandates killing you if you don't comply?

Hahahaha You have a very valid point, although I would advocate praying BEFORE the two D-11 Bulldozers ( I have heard that they have two ready and waiting for that day but I cannot confirm that.)move in to level the dome of the rock. I would probably say they have way more equipment ready to flatten stuff than just those two.

I have heard that the Israelis have parts and peices built in sections for the temple. They have had many other things already made.

Re: Please enjoy this war with Iran.

The other night I was with some folks at dinner. For those interested in such details, it was at the Black Eyed Pea in Castle Rock, CO. Either way, we're sitting there eating and this family with a gang of kids comes in, sits down, and proceeds to talk amongst themselves (next to our table). We could not place the language. It sounded slightly like Arabic, but wasn't. I guessed Hebrew and it turns out I was correct.

Talked with the family a little bit, learned they were from Tel Aviv and were flying out the next morning to go back home after a vacation in Canada and the US.

I concluded the conversation with, "I can't wait until the IDF glasses Iran".

I stand by that statement. Bomb them into the century of their mindset.

Iran has unequivocally declared they wish to destroy Israel and Israelis with it (and by default, many "Palestinians"). Iran wants total war. Iran needs to go. I could care less what most Israelis want. A child doesn't want the pain of the needle but is far less enthusiastic about the polio once they have it without the pain of the needle.

Middle-Eastern armies are a massive joke.

Should be interesting to see what the climate is in a month or two; particularly during Austere Challenge 12...

Barring some divine intervention, Iran's leadership needs to have an "accident", Sicilian style, before there is a whole new plain of black glass and newly vacated Persian gulf waterfront real estate.

There is no reasoning with them and their intentions are plain. Only idiots and people forced to dig their own graves ignore such peril.

And that peril extends to us no matter how much we try to gutlessly distance ourselves from Israel.

Re: Please enjoy this war with Iran.

You admit that you could "care less" what Israelis think, but want to nuke Iran?

I don't get your enthusiasm for a nuclear exchange, as if that "solution" makes things anything but worse in the long run.

FYI, the polio vaccine is the LEADING cause of polio and polio-related paralysis worldwide, I'd suggest a better analogy.

And how many tens of thousands of people are dying of Polio today compared to 60 years ago?

I love your chutzpah, but sorry to burst your bubble.

"From 1980 through 1999, there were 162 confirmed cases of paralytic polio reported. Of the 162 cases, eight cases were acquired outside the United States and imported... The remaining 154 cases were vaccine-associated paralytic polio (VAPP) caused by live oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV).”

The authors note that while India was polio-free in 2011, in the same year, there were 47500 cases of NPAFP. While data from India’s National Polio Surveillance Project showed NPAFP rate increased in proportion to the number of polio vaccine doses received, independent studies showed that children identified with NPAFP “were at more than twice the risk of dying than those with wild polio infection.”

According to their report, nationally, the NPAFP rate is now twelve times higher than expected. In the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar — which have pulse polio rounds nearly every month — the NPAFP rate is <span style="font-weight: bold">25 and 35 fold higher</span> than the international norms.

How about this for my Chutzpah; I have two daughters and both of them were immunized for a variety of diseases to include polio, MMR, DTP, Hepatitis and a few others that Mrs. Q was on top of. We tend to avoid voodoo and other hogwash in our home and thus far the dividends have been positive.

It's no secret that some vaccines have an incidence of infection. It falls under the rubric of acceptable risk. Tragic for those infected of course but on the whole a far greater benefit accrues to the populations immunized. I can't speak to the problem in India with specifics but there is no arguing the benefits to the world of the polio vaccines.

A good friend of our family had Polio when he was a boy. His paralysis was limited to his right arm and he is still alive today. It isn't a "concept" for me.

I also believe we landed on the moon too.

Re: Please enjoy this war with Iran.

Putting aside your attempts at marginalization, it's obvious you lack all the facts.

Do some reading on the Polio Vaccine, and report back when you understand what's the real issue.

This is not blanket condemnation of all vaccines, which can show efficacy, just a statement of fact regarding their "safety."

Here's a reality check for you from a colleague of Sabin and Salk, hopefully it will awaken you from your slumber.

Kudos for the Moon Landing nonsense, but you'll have to do better than that attempt at distraction.

Re: Please enjoy this war with Iran.

No distractions from me. This is a thread discussing a coming war with Iran. You are the one who sought to demonstrate your superior intellect with a flailing attempt to dismantle CS's polio remark.

The facts are unequivocal that Polio is a remnant of what it once was and that is due to the vaccine. That a faulty vaccine or a policy of vaccination in another country may have seen an increase in the incidence of infection does not change the facts I have pointed out.

Your insistence on detracting from my position as being obtuse, ignorant or naive is laughable. Not at all unlike the condemnations you directed at the LEOs in the Empire State murderer thread!

It isn't difficult marginalizing the marginal; which in this case is a hijacking of the thread from it's subject matter. For my part in this, I apologize.

To get it back on track, I am all for immunizing Iran's leadership with Montag's polio vaccine.

The vast majority of the Iranian population are very pro-West and secular with no desire to destroy Jews, Americans or anything else other than the mullah assholes who rule the country with all the tools and methods of a vicious dictatorship.

When will you assholes realize Iran is a repressed country and not a nation with a homogenous will and viewpoint?

It's bitterly hilarious that the same backward fuckwits who suggest bombing Iran into the current century forgo the full might and freedom afforded them in this information age to learn more about the topic than can be written in large font, with a thick pencil on the left ass cheek of an ant.

Most Israelis don't share your enthusiasm for a nuclear exchange with Iran.</div></div>

Fuck those Israelis and anyone else who want's to 'glass Iran'. They're pig ignorant of the country, the people and see only the smallest aspect of it through the same lens of a biased media that they curse and spite for... only showing one aspect of the whole truth.

Then it's time for a little Persian Spring before their leaders get them glassed. They won't be allowed to acquire nukes and that is the reality of it.

*emotionally charged, yet fact-based, opinion rant which doesn't change a thing, as if the US Gov gives a crap what Jon Horton says...*

(now all may quote and agree; or, disagree, with a similarly emotionally charged, yet fact-based (well, maybe), rant which doesn't change anything)

Enjoy.

Feel free to point out where my facts are wrong. If expression of opinion changes nothing then what are you doing offering yours?

Meanwhile, in Israel...

Agreed. However they had better act soon against their leaders before they develop serviceable nukes. Remember you don't need a ballistic missile system to hit us. A Uhaul will work just fine. Hell just call FedEx or UPS. There will beat each other to a pulp to deliver it there on time. A nice dirty one let's say one or two kilotons delivered to Times Square. God is Great mother fuckers! BOOOM

http://www.haaretz.com/weekend/week-s-en...8941?block=true </div></div>Haaretz is left-wing. They have an agenda that's pure Bob Fisk, with whom I unknowingly crossed paths one cold spring day on the periphery of what he calls The Great War for Civilization. Off the top of my head:

In 1953 it was Christopher Woodhouse, Britain’s senior agent in “Operation Boot”, who under official cover as the information officer for the British Embassy helped overthrow Mossadeq, Iran’s only democratically elected prime minister. Bringing back the Shah was, according to a 79-year old Woodhouse who was interviewed in 1997, meant to postpone the inevitable after Mossadeq nationalized AIOC (later British Petroleum).

Known in the U.S. as ‘Operation Ajax’, Teddy’s grandson Kermit Roosevelt ran the CIA end of the operation, the goal of which was to delay the rise in power of Ayatollah Kashani (Khomeini’s predecessor) and prevent the new democracy from moving Iran into the Soviet sphere of influence. Iranians called it ‘moamara’: The Plot. Norman H. Schwartzkopf, father of the General made famous in the First Gulf War, was reportedly the emissary who persuaded the Shah to remain on the throne despite threats against him from forces loyal to Mossadeq.

Mossadeq’s overthrow, the result of British and U.S. ‘interference’, was seen by Iranian nationalists as a warning against ‘soft’ revolutions that continued to allow Iran to be open to the west. According to historians, installing the Shah awakened modern Iranian nationalism by cementing the view that the royal family was a puppet of imperialist powers. By 1960 the riots had begun. By mid 1963 Ayatollah Khomeini was publicly preaching against the legitimacy of the Shah’s rule. In 1964 Khomeini was exiled to Turkey. He left Turkey for Iraq and, from Najaf, began fomenting rebellion until Saddam Hussein was urged – by the same western powers – to deport him. Khomeini lived in Paris until his return to Iraq in 1979.

The liberal view – to which, having spent some time in the region I am not entirely opposed – is that the Shah’s regime was its’ own worst enemy. By the end of the 70’s there were regular bombings within Iran. By 1977 there were over three thousand known ‘political detainees’ in eighteen special jails constructed solely for the purpose of housing opponents of the regime. When the Red Cross was finally permitted inside some of these jails it recorded over one hundred and twenty deaths by torture. Prisoners were forced to drink bleach, shocked with electricity, severely beaten with sticks and iron rods, women raped using electrified cables and men sodomized. The scale and scope of the oppression was far greater, however: During ‘routine’ interrogation, prisoners had their fingers and hands shaved in a meat slicer, their arms amputated by saws while they watched, their bodies roasted over propane torches and their lower limbs dissolved in acid.

Khomeini’s regime, when it deposed the Shah, was no more tolerant. One month after the 1979 revolution over forty death sentences had been pronounced by the revolutionary courts. The population of the political jails grew four-fold. Then began the systematic elimination of the intelligencia and the looting of the homes and properties of the missing, the ‘disappeared’ and the dead. A few months later Khomeini crushed the Communists, killing and imprisoning them, too. To the list of punishments handed out for the first time by the Islamic state courts was the sentence of being stoned to death. Chief Justice Khalkhali, who sentenced prisoners of the revolution, was estimated to have personally sentenced more than eight thousand men and women to execution.

Seven years later, by the time the USS Stark was hit by two Exocet missiles mistakenly fired at it from an Iraqi Mirage fighter, the U.S., Kuwait and Saudi Arabia had already thrown their full logistical support behind Iraq in its war against Iran. Otherwise the U.S. executive and legislative branches would not have both blamed only Iran and never Iraq for the incident when they knew full-well that Iran did not directly cause it.

All tolled: In proper perspective, it was the 1991 war against Iraq that was the anomaly.

Possessing and using nuclear weapons are two entirely different issues.

Iran is a rational actor, they know fully well what any use of nuclear weapons means to their survival.

Strategically it makes perfect sense for Iran to want nukes, and it's more than likely they already have them.

Of all the nations who possess nuclear weapons, how many have employed them?

Why aren't you losing sleep over the fear of Pakistan turning Time Square to rubble?

They're hardly "friends" and have a substantial nuclear arsenal.

Exactly the same could have been said of Pre WW2 Germany . The average German did not want war with anyone but they got it right up the ass .
The Iranian people have allowed fanatics to stay in charge for a very long time so they will eventually get it also . You reap what you sow.
