I just bedded my .260. When it cured it popped loose perfect. The bedding job is good, but I have gotten devcon on several places on barrel and action. How can I remove this without missing it up? Thanks.....

Re: How to remove devcon from barreled action?

If it's not painted, get a brand new razor blade and slice it off or some acetone may soften it up.

If it's painted, you may have a problem.

Next time, use more release agent and clean it up before it's set up.

Re: How to remove devcon from barreled action?

Try freezing it. If that doesn't work try heat.

Re: How to remove devcon from barreled action?

Steel wool should take the Devcon off, but it won't harm metal finishes, including bluing. Try it in an inconspicuous area first though.

You are going to have trouble removing that and not hurting the finish. What type of finish did it get on?

WTF are you talking about? Steel wool eats blueing!

WD40 and a new sharp razor blade. Spray it let it sit for 10-15 seconds the carefully slice it off

Re: How to remove devcon from barreled action?

If you try the steel wool method make sure you use grade #0000. It won't hurt bluing but, I don't know if it will effect other coatings.

lol dont use steel wool. You'll ruin your metal finish and the Devcon will still be there smiling at you.

Use a razor blade. Scratch it slightly. Live and learn.

STEP AWAY from the steel wool. It won't do shit to the Devcon.

Credit cards make great scrapers. . .

If its coated try dilligent fingernail pickin.

On your next bedding project try ordering a can of mold release agent. Far better performance than the more commonly used home brew products.

+1. Using PAM to make homemade plastics is one thing, your rifle is another. Mold release and tape are your friends, and a razor blade when the bedding starts to set is the way to go.

Re: How to remove devcon from barreled action?

Chuck up a wire wheel in your grinder and go at it, that will remove it in short order. You can also use a welders chipping hammer, they work great for tempermental stuff stuck to steel.

Re: How to remove devcon from barreled action?

I've used fine steel wool to remove JB Weld from bluing many times with good results and absolutely no harm to bluing. I've also used a steel wire wheel to remove burnt on carbon without a scratch on the finish. How do you think red rust is carded off when you apply bluing? A toothbrush? I should mention I'm using actual steel wool, NOT synthetic steel wool. That stuff will tear through tool steel. Synthetic wool contains abrasive particles that are much harder than steel, probably alumina or something similar, so it's closer to sandpaper in that sense.

I apologize if I'm incorrect here, but my experience just does not jive with what you guys are saying. Granted, Devcon is probably a fair bit tougher than JB Weld, so I can't speak directly to how well that will remove. But fine steel wool shouldn't easily damage a quality bluing job.

Edit: Another method I've heard of is using a copper penny (1964 or older) to scrape the substance off. Of course, since copper is so soft, it shouldn't harm the finish.

Re: How to remove devcon from barreled action?

Heat works pretty well to soften cured epoxy. Start with an electric heat gun; if that doesn't do it, then gently apply a propane torch (those little "micro" butane torches also work for this).

I always save "room keys" from hotel visits for use as general-purpose scrapers.

I'm still awaiting the discovery of a synthetic material that properly mimics the human fingernail.

Heat softens epoxy and breaks the bond.
Mini butane torch works well for this as said.
I had a blob end up in the lug area when there was a void in the putty. Put the torch on it for a few seconds, it popped right off.
