Well I finally bit the bullet, and ponied up moeny for an actual nice scope. Got the Nightforce Nxs Np-R1 from Mile High (great customer service there) and mounted it on my Savage in the new XLR chassis (Thanks Kyle it works GREAT) and dragged myself out to the range. Now when I tried to focus it in, I had the eyepiece adjusted almost to falling off and I still couldn't make out the hash marks with any regularity. Sometimes I could see them, then sometimes I couldn't. I never had a problem with my Leupold VXIII mil dot, and it kinda wrecked my range trip. So here's the question.

1 did I do something wrong focusing the scope?

2 Should I look into getting a different reticle put in the scope, or is that just throwing money away?

Or should I just re mount my Leupold and shoot that?

I had a thorough eye exam, and my prescription hasn't changed. I'm just kinda stuck, I REALLY want to like this scope, but I can't see anything..

Sorry for the whining, but I'm just kind of bummed ATM

Re: Old eyes new scope

If you haven't already, try this: put the scope on the highest magnification and the parallax adjustment on infinity (all the way to the end of the dial, past the infinity mark if necessary). Then twist the focus ring out until it stops. Point the scope at the sky and look at the reticle for 1-2 seconds max. If the reticle is not crystal clear, turn the focus ring in one-half turn and look again. Keep doing this until the reticle is crystal clear and you've found your ideal focus. Remember, don't look at the reticle for more than a few seconds because your eyes will try and bring into focus an unfocused reticle.

Re: Old eyes new scope

I did the focus bit at a time while lined up on a white sheet. I'll give it another shot though. I did notice that if I looked through it too long it would suddenly focus for a hot second then be gone.. Weather permitting I'll get a second chance tomorrow.

Re: Old eyes new scope

mount it up for a propper and correct eyerelief, keeping it "neutral" for a light change of creeping up or slacking back on the stock withkeeping edge to edge clarity (no glance outs) minimal

set your parallax first then worry about the ocular (eyebell) adjustment.

while thought of for eye relief, it's mostly there to sharpen the reticle.

1. if the problem persists, ask the guy / gal next to you to take a look, tell what's happening so he / she can look for what you are describing. if so you may have a return in your near future.

2. don't drink so much coffee or mountain dew before hitting the range.

3. take the leupold with you, if it happens again on the NF, look through the leupold and see if the same thing happens.

4. if so, have you been checked for diabeties or high blood pressure lately?

Re: Old eyes new scope

Hang in there. Chances are it is you and not the glass. Also, I would never set a scope up wearing my glasses.

If all the above good advice won't work for you, wear that customer service number out at Nightforce.

That used to work for me too. Until the Mk 4s ran out of adjustment. Not to mention that the bottom part of the bifocals makes seeing up close so much easier. Besides eye protection is a real good idea.

Re: Old eyes new scope

yes, with my prescription, there is no way taking off my glasses will ever happen. I'd probably wonder why the rifle isn't going boom while squeezing a small branch i had near my mat.

Re: Old eyes new scope

Well folks, gotta say I feel kinda stupid. After trying everything that was suggested, and a few other ideas, I finally figured it out. The new glasses I got after my last exam are those trendy rectangle things. When I get behind the rifle, I don't get enough of a view through them, so I switched to my old frames with the big honkin lenses and lo and behold...... MARKS! I can see windage and everything. Thanks to everyone who gave me a little help.
