I have an artifical right shoulder, so it is tough to single load, mostly because when I drop a round in on top of the mag it sits a hair lower then the ramp so the metaplate slams into the ramp and changes my seating. The rifle load perfect from the magazine! I had seen some followers sold but they do not work with the Apha mags.

Any suggestions.

These guys supposedly sell SLEDs for AI mag wells... but their 'cart' has been broken for a few years so you'll have to call.

Otherwise... for AR-15 mags you can find a 'tray' that fits in the top of the magazine itself, as you mentioned. You may have to find an imaginative machinist to take one of those and scale it up to fit an AI mag. It may also require some creative modification with bondo or jb weld to get it so it points the bullet right into the chamber - I had a 40X repeater like that some time back.

Re: Need help single loading for F Class

Conversely, instead of simply dropping the round on the top of the mag, give it a flick with your index finger to get it at least part way into the chamber. This way when you close the bolt, it will simply (and gently) move it the rest of the way into the chamber.

I do this on any F-Class style rifle I'm using, single shot or not, as I use a relatively light neck tension on my loaded rounds (.00175-ish), and I'd rather not bash up the noses of the bullets as they are transferred to the chamber by the bolt.

Hope this helps,

Darrell

Re: Need help single loading for F Class

I have problems with my 80 - 90 grn bullets single loading my AR without screwing up my position.

My Mann device wont load anything with out jamming.

Both load well from the mag but the longer bullets (80 - 90 grains) wont fit in the mag but you can tuck the rear of the case into the mag. and both load quite well.

I don't like poking the round in the chamber until the last instant before I shoot cuase I don't want the hot camber/barrel to heat up my round any more then it has to.

The worse for single loading is my M1A. They have to be poked down the mag. I never got a M1 Thumb from a M1, but have gotten many from M1As and M14s, trying to get the round in the mag while looking through the spotting scope.

Re: Need help single loading for F Class

I am assuming that the rifle in question is a bolt gun.

If you can, thumb the round down into the mag and feed from it. The follower and mag lips are designed to raise the bullet tip into better alignment for feeding as the bolt strips out the round.

If that's not an option, pushing the round partway into the chamber will ease feeding while minimizing heat transfer from rifle to cartridge. That way, you can hold off closing the bolt until wind, etc., will allow for a better shot.

If the rifle is a semi; it's important for safety reasons to always ensure that the bolt must strip the round from the magazine as it moves into battery. Otherise it moves faster, and goes fast enough to risk a slamfire.

If the ejection port is too small (AR?), you may need to consider using a bunch of magazines, each loaded with a single round. Or; Match Directors may grant the request of a physically challenged shooter with permission to use (a) magazine(s) loaded with multiple rounds.

BTW, I do not understand why somebody hasn't come up with an AR with an enlarged ejection port that allows reasonable access to slide a single round into the top of the magazine. I imagine such a modification could be greatly appreciated.

The other option for a bolt gun is to get a right bolt left port action. A fellow shooter just got that setup this yr and says it's great. He feels it's far easier to hold position feeding with his left hand.
