1 Piece Bolt - RH, SA, Lapua BF, .699 OD

??
lap bolt face not same as 308 right?

Re: PTG One-Piece Fluted Bolt With Handle ?

Just to replace a bolt that is working fine? I don't feel it's worth it. At the time of rebarreling and receiver trueing, then I feel it's worth getting the monolithic bolt. I personally wouldn't get the flutes and would stick with a Remington extractor on a standard bolt face.

Re: PTG One-Piece Fluted Bolt With Handle ?

We make any size you need.

Dave-

You really ought to update your profile and signature for the folks that might not know you...

Dave,
Can we get the exact size we need at the special price, or is that only for the odds and ends type pieces at your shop?

Re: PTG One-Piece Fluted Bolt With Handle ?

Specials are bolts that we made for folks and they never paid for them for one reason or another. We are almost out of the few we had. The custom size bolts are priced on the site. Thanks Dave

Re: PTG One-Piece Fluted Bolt With Handle ?

I am new to this site. can you tell me where PTG's site is located. Cannot seem to find it.

Re: PTG One-Piece Fluted Bolt With Handle ?

I feel that they are worth the extra coin. I bought one but I wasn't just replacing an old bolt. Does it really add anything that the standard bolt doesn't?......no, but it sure looks sexy

Straight.
It gives you more knuckle clearance for running a big bolt knob.
As nice as the swept back angled handles look, they are not as nice to use once you screw a big 'ol badger knob on them...

The fluting, NO.

But, swapping out the bolt for a larger diameter one certainly improves the fit of the bolt in the receiver, especially if you are having the receiver bore punched out to 0.705" as part of the truing work.

Re: PTG One-Piece Fluted Bolt With Handle ?

wouldnt fluting = less surface area drag on the bolt? not to mention a place for the dirt to go over draging on the bolt?...

In both cases any improvement would be so minimal that it would be hard to notice a difference. Bolt fluting is mainly aesthetic.

there's probably REALLY close to the same amount of contact radius between the bolt body and receiver bore with a smooth or fluted bolt. i doubt that does anything for you as far as reducing drag. i have found many fluted bolts to be "grabby" though while cycling.

as far as giving dirt a place to go, dirt has to be introduced into the bearing surface between the bolt and receiver bore for it to cause a problem. if you have say .005"-.007" of clearance between the two parts, not much dirt is going to find it's way into it on a clean, dry bolt. any dirt that collects on the bolt body will be wiped off of a smooth body when cycled. now when you cut flutes, you give "shelves" that could allow much larger dirt particles to gather and get wedged between the bolt and receiver bore.

until someone can prove otherwise, i feel fluted bolt bodies at the ejection port area on a two lug remington style action is for cosmetic reasons only. i'd really love for someone to prove me wrong though but i don't think it's going to happen.

Re: PTG One-Piece Fluted Bolt With Handle ?

The thing I hate about fluted bolts is that some people leave sharp edges on the edge of the flutes and then they shave the side of the case that's in the magazine and pressed up against the bolt while you are rotating the bolt closed.

Re: PTG One-Piece Fluted Bolt With Handle ?

Even just going a couple thousandths over the standard bolt diameter takes a little slop out of it. I ordered mine at .699 and its a dream

A typical 700 receiver will be around 0.702" bore size.
The typical 700 bolt is around 0.696" diameter.

So, if you are fitting a new bolt WITHOUT punching the receiver to 0.705" with the gre-tan raceway reamer, then 0.699" is a very good bolt diameter to use.

Re: PTG One-Piece Fluted Bolt With Handle ?

Do you always open up your raceway? Whats the advatages? More uniform? Tolerances?

The gre-tan reamer allows you to open up the receiver to be straight 0.705" instead of a taper as many factory guns are.
Once the reamer is through, you leave it in the receiver and use the pilot end of it to dial-in the receiver for truing.
Now you know you are running on the centerline of the bore for your truing cuts.
The actual diameter of the bolt raceway does not matter if you ordering an oversized bolt or putting sleeves on the existing bolt to remove the play.
At that point, you can setup the clearances that you want.
I just order new bolts from PTG.
It's easier than sleeving a bolt and it also gives me the ability to tighten up the extraction cam clearance as I am attaching the bolt handle to the bolt body.
