Hello all, I just joined the forum.. I used to shoot quite a bit, and want to get back into long range target/medium range deer hunting again..

I just ordered a Savage Model 12 LRP in 260, I've wanted a 260 for a long time. Love the BC of the 6.5 bullet. The Savage, on paper, impresses me. I've read good things on the rifle also, and for the money I had budgeted to spend, it looked like the best choice. I'll be receiving it in early October..

I'm putting my Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14X40 glass on top and a Harris Bipod.

Down the road I plan on putting the Burris Eliminater 3 on it, believing I can kill two birds with one stone, having a rangefinder plus a 16X scope in one unit..

I'm ordering some Lapua brass and Berger VLD 140gr target and 140gr hunting bullets for loading also..

Anybody have any opinions, or suggestions for pulling the best performance from this set up? I've seen some posts that were dated, just curious if there are any more people who have used this rifle, or scope, or any new info that anybody would like to comment on...

Thanks,
Mike

Scrap the idea of a rangefinding riflescope. You'll quickly realize it does nothing well.

For a LR scope, you want something with large target turrets, matching turret adjustment and reticle (MOA-MOA or MIL-MIL), and repeatable tracking.

If you want to spend $1500 on an optic, look at the SWFA super sniper 5-20x or Bushnell HDMR 3.5-21x.

You made a good choice on the rifle

Re: Savage Model 12 LRP 260 Remington

Ive got the 6.5creedmoor LRP, its a great shooter. Loves 140 Amax's and H4350. (the load printd on Hornadys box is the best shooting one Ive found.). It shoots so well, I picked up one in .243 that I got a good deal on.

Its a little nose heavy, so once this barrel is gone a Varmit contour is in order.

A cheek rest and lots of ammo should be all you need. I put a Karsten on mine.

Good luck.

Re: Savage Model 12 LRP 260 Remington

I agree about the rangefinding scope...doesn't seem like a great choice. If 5-600$ is your scope budget right now I would check into the Vortex Viper HS 5-15x40 at MidwayUSA. I have one and it is a great scope for the money (I got it for $400 on sale). Also might check into the SWFA 3-9 scope.

Or if you have the $1500 budget the scopes mentioned above are great scopes for sure!

Other than that welcome to the forums! Lots of great info on here!

Re: Savage Model 12 LRP 260 Remington

Thanks for the input guys. Much appreciated. I've been watching Sportsman channel and seen the ads for that Burris. I had heard good things from the company, but I don't know anybody who have tried that scope. I thought the concept was pretty cool, since I plan on using this for hunting whitetail as well as hobby target shooting. I'll check out that SWFA super sniper 5-20x for sure. I have my Leupold, thats been a good scope. I had that on my Model 70 25wssm and Ruger M77 7mm Rem mag before that. Great glass, but I want to put it on my Rem 700 243, so new glass is in order for the new rifle... I was looking at US Optics and Nightforce, but I can't spend that kind of cash..

Thanks again!
Mike

I have the same gun in 6.5, it shoots better than I can that's for sure. I put a vortex 6-24 on mine. I'm new to LR shooting but so far I don't think I would have done it differently.

Re: Savage Model 12 LRP 260 Remington

I just picked up this rifle over the weekend. I'm swapping my Vortext Viper PST 6-24x50 MOA in a GaP-10 20MOA uni-mount between this and my LR-308. I went with an EGW 0 MOA base.

As suggested skip the range finding scope and spend the money on a quality optic with a reticle that has

I'm starting load development this week running Hornady A-Max 123gr over H4350. Because this will be my competion gun and most of the matches I shoot are "lost brass" I couldn't justify starting with Lapua brass(budget reasons). I'll be forming cases from my surplus stock of .308 LC brass I have. For dies I went with the Redding 3 die set (FL, NS, Seater) and a Forster FL Benchrest die for forming the .260 brass from .308. Good prices from Midway on dies with the coupon and Powder Valley for powder and bullets.

As this project progresses I'll post up any pertinent info and results.

I've been using this thread as a guide:

One thing I've already found out via the interwebz is that the HS stocks recoil pad is of the glued in/epoxied type and there is a hollow cavity underneath (think AR-15 A2 stock with cleaning rod compartment) that you could add weight to in order to balance the front end heavieness.

Second, I'm not 100% comfortable with the Accu-trigger and may be swapping in a Rifle Basix.
