been thinking about a 700 police in 223 rem, but almost the same price i can have a tikka varmint, i just got a t3 lite in 308 and love it but, always wanted a 700 police. just wanted to know what yall think bout the 700 police in 223 . what twist rate is ? how heavy of a bullet can u use in it?

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

I have 700P's in .308 and 300WM. They are both great rifles. I've never shot one in .223, but I used to have a 700VS chambered for that cartridge. It was a 1 in 12" twist if I remember correctly and it was a tack driver with 55 grain bullets. With that rate of twist, though, I don't think I would run it with anything much heavier than that.

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

You could also consider the R700 SPS Tactical? 1:9 twist which will shoot the 69gr SMK's. The 20" barrel really doesn't seem to be an issue, I shoot mine out to 800 regularly. You'll just need to factor in a replacement stock, the Hogue really isn't up to much. However if you can get a T3 in 1:8 that would definitely be worth a look.

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

I have a sps in .223 and have had good results with the 77gr. Smk's.

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

I got a Tikka T3 Scout 20in Heavy Hammer Forged barrel. The gun is a Freaken LASER! I don't think any factory Remy700 Can touch it in terms of Accuracy/Quality. The Action is Butter Smooth (As mentioned by many) and Rock Solid Build. After owning Rmington 700 5R, AAC-SD I think Tikka is the Way to go for True Factory out of the box Accuracy Beasts.

Cheers.

Hard to beat a Tlkka for out of the box performance.

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

I would love to get a Tikka Scout in 308, but nobody has them in stock! Where have they all gone?

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

I have a Tikka T3 in .223 and it's a 1 in 8 twist and shoots 77 gr sierras great.....also have a super varmint in .308.....and this gun can shoot. I highly recomend them...

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

I sold both my Remington 700 and replaced it with Tikkas if that says anything. One of the Remingtons was a 700 police in 308.

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

The 700 Police and LTs are 1/9 twists, so you're looking at a 75gr Hornady BTHP as possibly the heaviest you can go.. Maybe. 69gr SMKs or the Barnes Match Burners should work no problem.

The Tikka's are nice rifles, and they have a good twist rate to shoot heavies if you're wanting to try some good distance with a .223.

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

I have an old 700 sps in 223 and love it. It shoots 1/2 moa all day with my reloads, never shot the heavier bullets, it was my squirrel shooter.

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

I have a R700 PSS in 223 and it's very, very accurate with 75 a-max and 80 MK, will not shoot the 80 a-max.

if I had to do it again, I'd get the Tikka

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

+1 for the Tikka T3. Got the 223, 8 twist and heavy barrel. Shoots the Nosler 77 great and shoots the Sierra 80 better(single load on the 80's though). Didn't care for the factory stock so I dropped it in a Bell&Carson Medalist. Will probably add CDI bottom metal with the AICS mag to allow for a longer seating depth.

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

I love tikkas (have 2) but I would go with a 5R due to the fact of all the aftermarket parts for the Rem.

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

What aftermarket parts would you like that aren't available in some form for the Tikka??

It even happens that products (chassis for instance) are available for the Tikka before they become available for the Remmi.

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

no brainer tikka, smoother action, better twist, better trigger, magazine fed. just because it has a plastic stock doesn't mean it doesn't work great!!

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

unless you wanna do work on the rifle, like bedding, gunsmithing the trigger, etc, get the tikka, it will likely shoot better than than the remington out of the box after all the work has been done to the remington.

Re: 700 police or another tikka ?

Tikkas are fantastic rifles with an ever expanding aftermarket. I wouldn't call this a no brainer, but to me Tikkas over Remy in 2012 is a solid choice (different 5 years ago when Tikkas were still awesome, but lacked any aftermarket).
