The plastic flip-up scope cover that came with my Leupold M4 lasted all of one day. It just kept flipping open. Finally not noticing it I rolled the rifle on it and snapped it off. I ordered the Alumina covers that are, well aluminum and are held closed with rare earth magnets.

Anyone have any experience with these?

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

I've seen lots of good reviews for them. I'll be ordering a set for my MK4 very soon. Do a search on google and you can find some reviews on them

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

I bought them last year after snapping off the plastic ones while yote hunting. I like them a lot better. The magnets hold the caps down pretty well, much better than the plastic caps, and they're obviously quite a bit more rugged.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

Looking for a set.

Where did you find the best price?

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

I got them on a pro purchase through work.
I hope to see them later this week and I'll leave some feedback.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

I've used them on my Leupold hunting scopes since they came out and really like them. Not only do they seem stronger than the plastic ones, they match exactly to the outside diameter of the scope. Looks better and no issues with needing additional barrel clearance.

Now if something similar were available for my Nightforces.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

They are good to go. Ran them for 3+ years on a Mark IV 4.5-14x I used to own. Still looked and functioned brand new when I sold it. I only wish they made a plain version without the gold Leupold symbol on it.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

Like the OP, the faux Butler Creek (Leupold) covers on my MK 4 would not stay closed. Neither would the replacements that Leupy sent me. The Aluminas I've got now are very nice, but won't take any measure of abuse. The only tough covers I can think of are the Nightforce type or a scopecoat.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

Butler Creek, since they were purchased by their new parent company... took a nosedive in quality. They are now the worst covers made.

The Leupold Alumina caps... when you can find ones that fit your scope... are great.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

The caps I ordered were a set made for the M4 6.5-20X50.
I called the LE rep to make darn sure they were the correct size, so they should fit.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

I have a set and ran them on a Mk4 3.5-10x40 M1 and really like them. They are pimp!!!

I like them so much I took them off before selling the scope and kept them just in case I bought another 40mm Leupy. Some things are worth just hanging onto.....

A set I had on my SR15 Match rifle.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

I have 3 different sets I like them so much. They will occasionally flip open when hunting (or if they are flipped open a branch can push them up and away from the scope housing), but they are quite sturdy if they do. I am known to hunt through some pretty treacherous terrain and I am surprised I have never ripped one off.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

mine are somewhere in wyoming on a huge ranch, stalking pronghorn was too much for those crapy covers, they are replaced with bikini covers and zip tied to the scope, haven't lost them yet.

Did you break Butler Creek caps or Leupold Alumina caps? I certainly have gone through a fair amount of brush with my Aluminas and they seem to be holding up fine.

You can get the Tenebraex ones for nightforce now that mount onto either a screw in adapter or one of the "TT" Tenebraex ARDs

got tired of breaking those cheesy butler creek so i spurlged for the alumina, they look good and they fit nice and tight but apparently not tight enough to bounce around for a few days in a truck and do lots of crawling and stalking and all fours..never buying another set.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

Since Buttler, who makes most of the plastic covers for Leupold and others off shored to China they have become POS

I changed all my Leupolds for Alumina covers and love them.

Stan Pate and I did a commercial for an AR Manufacture where we dunked rifles in 3 foot tank of water for 12 hours, dropped in mud and dunked in tank again. We used Leupold Scopes. We covered the lenses with Alumina covers and did not even get a drop of water inside on the lenses. Outstanding to say the least. Not cheap but the best

I've been working from my supply of 10-20 year old Butler Creeks so far, but yesterday needed to pick up a new one for a non-Leupold in a size I didn't have. The package is marked "Made in Philippines". Were they definitely made in China for a while and we are actually now looking at a third generation of covers?

I hope there's a change. I used to use Butler Creeks with no problems. The last three sets I've bought all broke just from being moved around inside a soft case. Nice way to screw up a good product.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

The Alumina's are nice if you use your rifle on the range or don't do anything very rough w/ it.

But bump them one time with the covers open and they are toast.

The hinge pins will also walk out if you use them very much. I've had 2 of them do that and you have to push them in and re-stake them.

Completely different experience than mine. I have beat crap out of my Alumina covers and they work far better than the plastic ones.

Can I ask what brand you have and where you got them?

I don't mean to answer for someone else, but perhaps I can help clarify: ALUMINA is the name of the ALUMINUM flip up caps made by Leupold that are designed to fit their threaded eyepieces and objectives.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

I had the flip up caps on a Mark 4, I really liked them. But if you want something stronger just get Leupold Alumina Threaded Lens Covers, they don't flip, but should be strong.

Re: Alumina Flip-ups

It's funny, I haven't bought a set of Butler Creeks in over 3 years. I had a set, correction 3 sets, for my old Bushnell 10x40.

The eyepiece was fine, flipped open as it should, never an issue. But the damn objective lens cover ALWAYS broke right at the hinge. Bend them a few degrees in the wrong direction left or right and it was as good as garbage.

I went through 3 objective lenses before I just said screw it and kept them off. Wasn't worth the hassle any longer. Now I just use the sunshade and pay attention. When I invest in a better scope, I'll wind up grabbing some bikini covers or something.

These seem like viable options as well.
