Re: 9/11 ROLL CALL! Millitary, Fire, Police

I had an upcoming assignment change and on that day I made the decision to switch from an air-air only fighter to one including an air-ground role because I wanted to be a part of the revenge I knew was coming. Now looking back on it it almost seems naive as I realize now that you can never exact enough revenge to satisfy a hurt. Still, it was easily one of the best decisions I ever made because I got to do the most rewarding job in the world, close air support. So proud of the Soldiers and Marines I had the honor to work for, and wish I could have done more.

Re: 9/11 ROLL CALL! Millitary, Fire, Police

I don't think that was naive. You did what you could to exact some revenge. Much more than most other Americans can say. Thank you for what you did!

Those of us in public safety can only keep coming to work, getting in the fire engine, truck, ambulance, or patrol car and show the bastards that you will not run us off.

Re: 9/11 ROLL CALL! Millitary, Fire, Police

No longer on the engine. A department change and a promotion later I'm an Asst. Chief. 24 years next month and still going.

Re: 9/11 ROLL CALL! Millitary, Fire, Police

Thanks, Chief.

We need you. I don't want to be in an office, but I'm glad there are fire service vets that do it.

Re: 9/11 ROLL CALL! Millitary, Fire, Police

I was getting ready for work after PT on 9/11 when the guy with the barracks room next to me told me a plane hit one of the towers. I went and looked for a few minutes. I thought it was odd but being aware of the other planes hitting the WTC and the Empire State building in the past I knew it wasn't unheard of.

When he came and told me a second plane hit, I got a bit excited and knew we were going to war.

I know "excited" is a shitty term in light of the tragedy unfolding but as a young Infantryman the thought of testing your mettle in combat was a welcome experience, as was revenge. We got screwed out of being in on the invasion of Afghanistan but at least we did the invasion of Iraq.

Re: 9/11 ROLL CALL! Millitary, Fire, Police

I was standing in the DFAC dining area talking to a friend when the first plane hit. This little female slut started laughing. I have really not wanted to hit anyone harder than I wanted to hit that little idiot that day. I realized immedietley what it was. This had to be the second attempt and a successful one at that. I walked back to my office, opened my laptop and filled out a DA-31 for 30 days of leave. Walked over to teh CO's office, handed it to him. He asks,'What are you going to do?"
I am going to NYC to help out where I can

"SGT, you are not going anywhere. Mark my words, we will be going somewhere within the year."
A few months later I found myself at this little concrete pad in a metal hanger building a plywood place called the BME. We cleaned blood, mess, and crap out of rooms while they stacked bodies from Anaconda's Bagram takeover. We left befoer we were supposed to so 82nd could take over for the first long tour.
OEF VII, it looked ten times more the city and had way too many politics for my taste. The palce filled with fobbits and POGS who thought they were God's War Children, hard as nails...pussies with guns.
Walking through the UC after working out this morning, it was quiet. A few good conversations with the APSU Veteran's Association, a cup of coffee that was blacker than the cup it was in, adn back home for some chemistry homework. AC suits me fine. Lots of pussies around here too...some even like ruggedly handsome beat up looks too(her words, not mine)

Re: 9/11 ROLL CALL! Millitary, Fire, Police

don't forget the CIA http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/11/opinion/the-bush-white-house-was-deaf-to-9-11-warnings.html?_r=1

"I have read excerpts from many of [the still-classified Presidential Daily Briefs] … and come to an inescapable conclusion: the administration’s reaction to what Mr. Bush was told in the weeks before that infamous briefing reflected significantly more negligence than has been disclosed. In other words, the Aug. 6 document, for all of the controversy it provoked, is not nearly as shocking as the briefs that came before it. The direct warnings to Mr. Bush about the possibility of a Qaeda attack began in the spring of 2001. By May 1, the Central Intelligence Agency told the White House of a report that “a group presently in the United States” was planning a terrorist operation. Weeks later, on June 22, the daily brief reported that Qaeda strikes could be “imminent,” although intelligence suggested the time frame was flexible.

But some in the administration considered the warning to be just bluster. An intelligence official and a member of the Bush administration both told me in interviews that the neoconservative leaders who had recently assumed power at the Pentagon were warning the White House that the C.I.A. had been fooled; according to this theory, Bin Laden was merely pretending to be planning an attack to distract the administration from Saddam Hussein, whom the neoconservatives saw as a greater threat. Intelligence officials, these sources said, protested that the idea of Bin Laden, an Islamic fundamentalist, conspiring with Mr. Hussein, an Iraqi secularist, was ridiculous, but the neoconservatives’ suspicions were nevertheless carrying the day.

In response, the C.I.A. prepared an analysis that all but pleaded with the White House to accept that the danger from Bin Laden was real.

“The U.S. is not the target of a disinformation campaign by Usama Bin Laden,” the daily brief of June 29 read, using the government’s transliteration of Bin Laden’s first name. Going on for more than a page, the document recited much of the evidence ….

And the C.I.A. repeated the warnings in the briefs that followed.

***

Yet, the White House failed to take significant action. Officials at the Counterterrorism Center of the C.I.A. grew apoplectic. On July 9, at a meeting of the counterterrorism group, one official suggested that the staff put in for a transfer so that somebody else would be responsible when the attack took place, two people who were there told me in interviews. The suggestion was batted down, they said, because there would be no time to train anyone else.

Re: 9/11 ROLL CALL! Millitary, Fire, Police

I was walking in to work at the GS Generator shop on Ft. Bragg. Some girl in my platoon drove up and started yelling... "The twin towers were bombed...the twin towers were bombed." I said..."What the fuck are the twin towers?" Cell service was so jammed up it was tough to get through. That night me and a Sargent got over 100 reefer vans ready to go to NY to store dead bodies in. 2 months later we were in Uzbekistan.

Re: 9/11 ROLL CALL! Millitary, Fire, Police

And what branch of the military, what law enforcement org, or FD were you then or still affiliated with?

Re: 9/11 ROLL CALL! Millitary, Fire, Police

Thank you for your service!

My question was to graywolf260. He didn't mention what branch he was in.
