Can you turn a Barrel down without destroying the accuracy
i have a nice Bartlein Barrel that is currently MTU contour i am wanting to turn it down and use it on a hunting rifle build i am doing is this possible or am i going to destroy a expensive barrel

Re: Can you turn a Barrel down?

people do it all the time. Does it destroy accuracy? Theres a lot of theroys behind this. You can send it back to bartlein and have them do it.

Re: Can you turn a Barrel down?

Call bartlein and ask. My guess is that they will not touch it. I had a 1.25 straight kreiger turned down, the smallest contour kreiger would do was an MTU.

If the barrel is not yet chambered, sell it and buy one with the desired contour.

I have had Bartlein turn down a couple, and for what they charge, plus the quik turn around time, it's really hard to beat. Great guys to deal with. Just one good reason I use mostly Bartlein. Best of luck.

Re: Can you turn a Barrel down?

About what did they charge and what was the turnaround time

Re: Can you turn a Barrel down?

Frank green quoted $40 in another thread.
Obviously that's just for turning the blank, shipping and gunsmithing would be additional.
At the minimum, the barrel is gonna need to be re-crowned as they will likely shove a center into the crown.

Depending on what he exactly wants will do it.

Give us a call and tell us what you want to do. Unless it is something that will involve a ton of time your looking at $40 for the recontour.

Yes the muzzles crown will need to be touched up by your smith etc...

Will put a thread protector/collar over your threads so they don't get damaged at all.

Being as it's chambered it wouldn't hurt to double check to make sure there is no small burr at the chamber edge as well but usually there is not.
