Madison, Ms
Alright gentlemen. I bought this scope as a hunting scope to put on my .300 win mag 700 5r. With a muzzle brake ism. I also own a 700 police with a muzzle brake in .300 win mag. Put it on the police first and it worked great. Badger Ordinance base & rings on it. All of a sudden it went to shit. Sent it back and got it back w/in the week. It worked just like it should. I have sense purchased 2 nf nxs 5.5x22 scopes. Jumping foward. The vortex will hit 3 or 4 times same poi then shift right. Whereas the nf I put on as test will not move in regards to point of aim. This will be the 2nd time I will have to ship it back. Frustration is all I can say. Anybody had this problem?? It's a 6x24x50 pst. Vortex is a great company in reguards to customer service but damn I'm tired of this.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Have someone else try it on their rifle before you make the absolute determination that it's the scope.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

I put the vortex on my gap crusader ... Same thing. Whereas I put my nf on the ss5r and shot 1/4 moa at 100 yards. Reticle is moving. Turrets are still good but I guess the concussion may have broken the etching.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

I didn't have that problem with mine but then it was only on a 223 AR. My 2 cents is to send it in (again) and then either relegate it to a lower caliber rifle or sell it.

BTW I have a 300 win mag sendero, uncompensated and it has eaten 3 leupolds however the bushnell 3-12 on it now has held up great. I really think with magnum calibers the mid-priced scopes are trial and error until you get one that holds up.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

I'm going to try & swing a new one & sell it then spend a few extra bucks and get another zeiss. I've got the mc conquest 4.5x14x50 and I love it. Probably step up and get the higher powered one. I hear that they hold up very well with magnums

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Never ever a minutes trouble with my Viper PST. She has ben a 308 but will go on my 300WSM. Will advise.....

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

I hope that isn't too common. I just mounted one on a 338 lapua today.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Yup. Mine is all over the place. Kinda sux when you put three shots inside two inches at 500 then the next two are 10 inches away. Bout to give this famed Vortex customer service a try

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Cool Joe , you nailed it. Was at the 520 yard line hitting 3" groups all of a sudden it shifted right 5" so I decided to see what was going on and continued firing with the same poi right. Moved turret 3 left and was Back on. But damn after $ for vlds, brass, powder, ect.. Ntm my TIME at the reloading bench I would expect a little more. This is the second time so I am demanding a new scope. They are great at customer service. Had it Back in 3 days the 1st time. Viper Vortex pst 6x24x50 ebr1 mrad anyone??? I've got to many damn scopes anyways.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Is all the ones with problems on rifles with brakes? I'm just wondering if the braked rifles are some how harder on scopes than un braked magnums.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

We were hitting 400 yds with my pst the other day with no worries.
But that was on my 308.
It will be on my 300WSM and Mike will have his PST on his 338to Lapua
We will be shooting 500 yds next
Saturday and will advise if we run into the same thing. My FN does not have a break though

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

That's what Vortex rep told me. Bc of of the concussion coming from the side and not outwards, it's actually putting more force on the etching. I guess you could compare it to putting it next to a sub woofer compared to a normal loud radio speaker.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Well, maybe mine will be ok. I certainly hope that Mikes
pst does good too.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

You should be fine. It takes a while for em to start messing up if they are going to mess up anyways

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

I hope I don't have problems with it. I guess if I do I'll try a razor.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Muzzle brake causing this??? I doubt that. I had a VX11 on my braked 338 lapua MLR for 200 rounds before my Nightforce came in and I had no problem with it at all. Send it back and ask for a new one.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

I'd say the reputation of Vortex has been called into question at the very least with this post, which is a switch outside of a few on this forum.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Im not calling out vortex by any means I think they're cus service rocks. And their scopes. Its not like I shot it 17 times and it messed up. This has been around 600 rounds later after the first fix. Just imagine a .300 win mag loaded wayyy hot going off that many times. Bound to happen. It's my .300 rem 700 p that actually started all this. I have 4,000 ft/lb at muzzle. It will actually blow your ear plugs out of your ear if you don't have them in tight. I shot it around 900 times bf it messed up first time. Ps shipped it this morning

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

That makes me feel better that it took that many rounds to cause a problem. I might not reach that many before next year at this time.

Lol. Why? Did you think they were utterly perfect and their parts were infallible?

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

I bought mine used on this forum and have less than 100 rounds down range on my .308 however I'm very pleased with it so far. I don't have a muzzle brake however it has been repeatable. I wanted a NF but couldn't swing double the $.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

A .308 is a great platform for this scope. If I don't sell my new one I'll put it on my GAP Crusader. Should be perfect rig for hunting & then during spring & summer move one of my nf's on it for comp & rec shooting. Anyways got to go w/ what you got

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

I'm pretty green when it comes to bolt guns. This is my first one and only have 240 rounds through it. It's a Remy 700 aac-sd .308 with a YHM muzzle brake. I'm trying to exhaust all other possibilities before I call Vortex. I just utilized my new OAL guage an it seems that the throat in my chamber is way long. 2.963 oal with SMK 175s. Got a box of black hills with 175s and they measure 2.785. Oglives are 2.378 to 2.204. Quite a jump to the lands. If I reload to this length, the rounds won't fit in my AI mags. Beats me. Going to try a 10x scope in a couple days to see if it really is the glass

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Joe cool, vortex will take care of you I promise. You'll have it back in a week. May get a new scope as well.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Sure Vortex will take care of him.
All he has to do is but pick up the phone.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Their customer service is excellent. Bought a Pst for a moose hunt and it suffered internal fogging first time out (went on a test trip prior). With a week and a half before the hunt the got it repaired and back to me so it could go along. And no, it didn't fog in some of the usual Yukon river weather. Bummer that ithad troubles but fast and painlessish fix.
I will buy another one real soon.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Well I talked to the folks at vortex and as I presumed the etching was broke. The lady I talked to said it was moving everywhere when they tested it. so guess what NEW SCOPE!! Sell this one & move on to something more rugged or keep it?? Thoughts??

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

I suspect you have already decided. You could go for strike three but you have lost confidence in the scope and that is not a good thing.

Great Customer Service is nice but useless when you need a scope that works on a hunt, competition or engagement.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Sorry, I fixed my mistake. Bad day and I'm not the one reading very well.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

I have a PST 6-24X FFP and really like it.

But one thing about a warranty, you shouldn't buy a scope because the company has a good warranty, you should never need it.

You should buy a scope because it will hold up under all of the conditions under which you expect to use it.

If ya have to send your scope back for warranty work, it's kinda hard to shoot that < 1/2" group at 100m.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

I can honestly say warranty was the last in a very good line of reasons I bought
PST VIPER. Nevertheless, warranty has its place.
As long as human beings are involved in making scopes then
I will always consider warranty.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

Ive also got a pst 6-24x50 ffp. Havent had a single problem with it so far. Ive had it about a year

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

I very briefly owned a 4-16 FFP MRAD and wasn't happy at all with the glass clarity-- it always seemed slightly hazy & out of focus no matter what the diopter or parallax. Everyone else who looked through it felt the same way.

I have a pair of 6-24 FFP MRAD PST's at the house right now for a friend that the glass is (or should I say, was) perfect on. The clarity of both is far better than the 4-16 PST I briefly had.

Unfortunately after mounting the first one one on his .338 win mag braked hunting rifle and taking 8 shots the reticle had 27 flakes of debris on it; some small, some large, and one that looked like a curled shaving from machining. Phonebooking the scope managed to get all but 6 of the flakes off the reticle but since the scope is FFP the flakes go from somewhat small and "not too bad" at 6x to very distractingly large at 24X. I just got off the phone with Vortex who were very understanding and I had a FedEx return label waiting in my email before I was even off the phone with them! Vortex CS is great.

I phonebooked the second unfired 6-24 PST last night as a "pre-check" and nothing fell onto the reticle; I mounted that on the .338 and will be shooting it this week while PST #1 goes back to Vortex. I'm very confident they'll make it right as in my previous experience Vortex CS is fantastic.

Keeping my fingers crossed the 2nd scope (which was drop shipped from Vortex at the same time as the 1st one with debris) doesn't also develop debris issues after being fired; that rifle & scope need to go to Utah in 4 weeks for mule deer season!

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

This really doesn't make me feel good about using one on my 338. I only got one shot off last weekend before the storms started up again and shut me down. I hope this weekend I can get the rest of my loads I did for it shot.

Re: Anybody had problems w/ Vortex viper pst

So, the trouble no doubt is from braked magnum rifles.
Thats such a darn shame. Im glad none of my rifles have brakes.
