I have the Hornady Powder dispenser, the scale is terrible, it has never gotten one charge correct, I have to check and add or remove grains with my Redding balance scale. I have tried leaving it on before using, I constantly calabrate the pos. I think I may get the RCBS one. Is there a trick to making this thing remotely accurate, I am loading for a match and it takes twice as long with this thing........

Re: Hornady Auto Powder Dispenser sucks, help

You're not the first to say that.

Re: Hornady Auto Powder Dispenser sucks, help

I use mine for loading all our match ammo for our LR matches. It really don't like H4350 very well, gets down to the last .1 or .2 and drops 3 or 4 kernels in and that makes it go over. I've checked it many times against my beam scale and it's always right on the money with what it shows. I've tried the straw trick but it doesn't seem to work for the Hornady as well as the RCBS for some reason.

I have found if I set it to slow down about 6 tenths early using the mode button and also setting it on the slow speed setting it does much better. Just about the right timing to let me seat the bullet, wipe it down and put it in the box. Using a powder throw and trickler is faster but I enjoy the slower pace although getting a few overages in a row does get frustrating. I'm thinking of making an insert with a smaller hole for the powder to flow into as it makes it way into the pan thinking that will slow the amount of powder that is in the tube at any one time.

We're only shooting out to 1000 yards on steel plates at our matches with some being 3/4moa or even less in size so it's not like we're needing Bench Rest accuracy. We did have to send back our first one, the buzzer quit working but it was a really low serial number. The replacement was a later version and we've never had any problems with accuracy using this measure since it was replaced.

I don't have any experience with that balance, but have played with analytical balances
Never really heard about people doing it in the reloading world, but you could build a Faraday cage to make sure you don't have any RF in the room messing with it.

Re: Hornady Auto Powder Dispenser sucks, help

Maybe it is static electricity. Get some anti-static spray. Also, it takes a few hoppers full of powder to get a nice graphite coating on all the surfaces. This helps a lot to dissipate static.

Re: Hornady Auto Powder Dispenser sucks, help

Thanks guys for the help. I have to load 200 rounds for a match this weekend and it is taking forever when I have to check every round for accurace of the powder, I have had some big swings in the loads from right on to blow the rifle up over. I will mess with the dispenser again and then decide if it becomes a target or not.

Re: Hornady Auto Powder Dispenser sucks, help

My wife's cat dumped my Charge Master on my garage floor sunday, big mess, won't dispense powder.

So I borrowed a friends Hornady L&L powder dispenser.
What a pile of shit this thing is, would throw ball powder .2gr over. I would pick it out with my tweaser, get it close, call it good. Took the ammo to the range Monday, the rounds shot every bit as good as any I've loaded from my Chargemaster, so I'm not sure!!
The thing really sucks with big kernal powder like VV N-570, I adjust my charge .2gr low, usually comes out ok.

But definitly not as user friendly as the RCBS.
I would recommend calibrating the scale, and watching it, should do ok.

Re: Hornady Auto Powder Dispenser sucks, help

I recalibrate about 10 times a loading session, because I never get the correct grain. I litterally check every round that is measured on my balance scale and they are all off significantly. I have 75 more to load tonight, I will mess with the scale and report back. Otherwise, it will be shot at noon.

Re: Hornady Auto Powder Dispenser sucks, help

After mothballing my RCBS 10-10, I can't even imagine weighing a charge on a beam scale, fuck!!!

Honestly without check weights, who knows which one is right?
I guess consistency would be the key.

Instead of using up one round and using the Powder Measure as a target I'll send you a box of 100 new bullets for your gun and you send me your red headed step child? I'm pretty happy with mine and be happy to give your messed up unit a good home, maybe mine will talk to yours, give it some counseling and get it to quit misbehaving.

Re: Hornady Auto Powder Dispenser sucks, help

I sent mine back to hornady with a letter explaining what was wrong with it and they sent me a brand new one. I then put the new one on ebay and bought an rcbs chargemaster for about 75 bux more then got a 50 dollar rebate

Re: Hornady Auto Powder Dispenser sucks, help

Let me play with it tonight. I may take you up on that....jk I am hoping your advice works with my pos. I do like the idea of getting a new one and selling it as new for a better rcbs. We will see.

Re: Hornady Auto Powder Dispenser sucks, help

Both of ours works like a charm... keep all fans and A/C off when using it.

Re: Hornady Auto Powder Dispenser sucks, help

Same experience here. Make sure there is no air moving when you are throwing the powder. Mine works fine as long as I turn off the fan and make sure the a/c isnt blowing.

Re: Hornady Auto Powder Dispenser sucks, help

Also, the last time I used mine I forgot to calibrate it, but checked every measure with a RCBS scale. I would say it was maybe 1-3 kernels off.

One other thing i have noticed with them is dont have your cell phone sitting on the same bench when using your dispencer. Good luck at your match!

I have found that if you hold the MODE button and set it to 1.5 or 1.6 it will stop feeding at 1.5 and trickle until it hits its mark, its much more accurate, leave the speed at normal as well.

I turn the speed down to slow and mine works well.

Also, in my experience, the straw trick works pretty well with ball or flake powders.

Good luck,
