Just got my Sparrow a few weeks back. I took it camping this weekend, and put somewhere around 2k rounds through it. Deciding I should examine how much buildup is caused by 2k rounds, I tried to take it apart and found that it is pretty well seized up. I can't get it apart, and I have a STRONG grip.

What should I do? Squirt it with penetrating oil? Use heat? Boil it?

It's an aluminum sparrow, for what it's worth.

Re: Can't get my Silencerco Sparrow apart

Not sure how these come apart, but with my YHM Mite, I used some penetrating oil and let it set for a few hours. After a few hundred rounds, Ive always taken apart the Mite to make sure it doesnt seal up, put it back together and shoot on. But 2k rounds? Yea, you might have a problem.

Re: Can't get my Silencerco Sparrow apart

I have the aluminum sparrow as well. Mine is COVERED in scratches from having to work to take it apart.

I got it apart with a vice grip and a pipe wrench.

I don't know if there is some end plate adapter to get it apart easier.

Clean the hell out of it when you get it apart, it is difficult to get back together if you don't. I actually had to scrape the carbon off the red "sleeve" things.

Re: Can't get my Silencerco Sparrow apart

If you get one of these it is easier to take apart. Disassembly Tool Still not easy though.

Edit: Just saw that they are out of stock, give them a call and they may have one laying around somewhere

2K rounds through it in one weekend, that must have been one hell of a camping trip!!!How did the Sparrow hold up through it all?

Off the grid, no power, no cell, etc. So we shoot a lot because it doesn't bother anyone. All night, because it's about the only chance for night shooting I have. We tend to put a LOT of rounds down range when it's all said and done, through a number of different firearms and and calibers.

The sparrow did great! Very quiet. It's the first .22 can I own, but I am satisfied with my purchase, though I should have done a BIT more research. The SS can was out when I bought this one and I didn't know there was more than one type of Sparrow. I would have bought it had I known.

I did get the sparrow open. I ended up using a pipe wrench. Not nearly as dirty inside as I thought, though I can't get the lead off the clamshell pieces. I got as much off as I could and figure I can shoot the shit out of it while I am waiting for them to contact me about my SS baffle upgrade, and they will clean it while they are making the update.

A pipe wrench? Did you scratch it up? The way I clean my Mite can to get the carbon off the inside of the can is buy using a 10ga shotgun brass brush attached to a drill.. cleans right up!

Re: Can't get my Silencerco Sparrow apart

Regarding getting the lead off the clamshell pieces. I coat them with Hoppes #9. Let soak 10-15 minutes. Using either an empty brass 45acp case or an empty 45/70 case, at a shallow angle I scrape the lead off with the case mouth. Doesn't appear to hurt the clamshells and gets the vast bulk of the lead off. Probably other bore cleaning solvents would work just as well in helping to loosen up the lead and carbon fouling.

Re: Can't get my Silencerco Sparrow apart

Yes the end pieces did get scratches. sucks.

Good to know about using the 45 case! I'll have to give that a try.

Re: Can't get my Silencerco Sparrow apart

Well, if you have trouble cleaning it, you can send it in and we'll take care of it for you.

Avoid using any ammonia or corrosive solvents as it will start to erode the aluminum. An ultrasonic should be avoided too.

Give us a call or email me tomorrow, and we can get to the bottom of cleaning this up for you. Thanks!

Re: Can't get my Silencerco Sparrow apart

For next time, it can be nice to lightly coat the clamshells as well as the threads with some anti-sieze. Really helps take down.

This. Ive got two. A new SS and an older aluminum upgraded to SS. Ive had the issue getting one of the apart before...so much so that I had to put it in my vise. Anti-seize is the answer.

Re: Can't get my Silencerco Sparrow apart

My Sparrow clam shell cleaning tool made from a 50BMG case...
Don't think I have ever shot more than 500 rounds without dissassembly.

Re: Can't get my Silencerco Sparrow apart

mine was locked up around 1k took it back out to the range shot 25 rounds through it quickly to warm it up it came apart with ease

Re: Can't get my Silencerco Sparrow apart

Brass case is genius.

I've been using brass punches with some luck, but they're harder to 'dig' with.

Re: Can't get my Silencerco Sparrow apart

Per manual, clean after 1000th round.

Re: Can't get my Silencerco Sparrow apart

I have the sparrow as well. I have put quite a few reounds down it and have yet to have a problem getting it apart with this method:

1. Using the cheapo Lyman knock off ultrasonic cleaner and the ed's red cleaner, with heat on I run it through one cycle.

2. Open it up (unscrew end cap, slide off outer sleeve, and then the baffle covers come off easy).

3. Using a toothbrush, I scrub the baffle and the covers.

4. Clean it one more time

5. Wipe it all down.

6. Put it back together.

The ed's red cleans it nicely without damaging the aluminin covers or the o rings (so far). It also leaves it with a nice lube job to making the outer sleeve slide back on without abrasion.
