My wife finds an AR too heavy for a four day class. Any options other than an FN P90?

Re: recommendation needed

My wife shoots an M1 Carbine pretty well. I know its not necessarily tactical, but its a light weapon system, and with 30 round mags, iron sights, and a good sling, shes pretty lethal with it. Just food for thought.

What does it weigh?

Re: recommendation needed

I weighed an old colt lightweight sporter AR without the magazine and it was 6.2 lbs - some of the carbon fiber AR's may shave close to a pound off that

if that is too much the best bet is probably some weight training

Re: recommendation needed

JP Enterprise makes one of, if not the lightest AR-10 on the market. But comes @ a cost. Worth every penny !!!!!! Take a look.

Re: recommendation needed

If you're willing to build this should be very lightweight as well . . . I've been thinking about it for my wife, but haven't taken the leap. Should come in around 6lbs I think, maybe less, with quality parts.

-Lightweight 14.5 barrel (something like Daniel Defense or BCM)
-Rainier or Les Baer upper without forward assist
-Noveske 9" or 11" NSR rail (or Midwest Industries Gen 2 tubular rail)
-LMT semiauto BCG or JP low mass BCG
-Old Colt Fiberite/Fiberlite CAR-15 stock (~5 oz), M4 stock (~7oz) or Magpul MOE (~8oz)
-Aimpoint Micro H-1/T-1

Optional depending on purpose of rifle.
-KAC micro BUIS (if you need them) or Daniel Defense fixed BUIS

Re: recommendation needed

I had a custom Noveske built for me earlier this year which I took to a three course at Thunder Ranch. Essentially it was their Gen 2 lower, light weight upper with forward assit, "skinny" 14.5 inch barrel, brake, their brand new 11 inch NSR rail (and I mean brand new at the time - they received their first bunch on a Thursday morning and shipped me my rifle that afternoon as my class was starting the next Thursday), an ACE skeleton stock, Noveske BUIS set and a Trijicon RMR red dot - total weight including an empty mag - 6.375 oz.

And let me say, INCREDIBLE rifle.

Re: recommendation needed

I know you said, "other than" concerning the P90, but a friendly reminder on that weapon, my wife complains about her finger getting tired on that gun after 200 rounds or so.

Have you had her try out an AK74? This is bar none my wife's favorite, even her light weight S&W MP Vtac doesn't come close to the AK. Don't get a folding stock, they tend to weigh just a tad more, since they have a muzzle brake already it is seriously a joke for recoil.

Re: recommendation needed

Are you saying that the difference between a 6 pound rifle and a 7 pound rifle is relevant to her ability to learn?

Because there is no way to save a meaningful amount of weight on a tactical AR platform.

Re: recommendation needed

Cheaper solution... Muscle building. Not trying to be an ass, but IMO trying to get a rifle as light as possible isn't going to do her any favors in training but instead handicap her.

Re: recommendation needed

Thanks to all for the advice. My wife is tiny, does work out, but has a chronic illness. Hopefully, she will get stronger, but who knows? Recoil, however, is not an issue. Any weight saving is worthwhile, as is bringing the weight closer to the body. Unless I am misreading the numbers, while the AK74 is lighter than the AK 47, it does not appear lighter than an AR.

Thanks for the tip about the P90 trigger. I will check out the M1 carbine--any particular manufacturers?

Re: recommendation needed

M1 carbines are pretty sweet little guns, bit range limited but fun, and nostalgic.
One question though, I didn't see where it'd been asked, what's the set up of the current AR?
Allot of people myself included have FAT ARs, 8 or more pounds is not uncommon. 14.5" or 16" light profile barrel with carbon fiber or aluminum no rail handgaurd, and a light buttstock should be pretty light, composite receivers could reduce weight even more. And check your optics selection if it has them, allot of them are pretty heavy. Ditch the BUIS if you don't need them, don't store crap in the grip or stock.

Re: recommendation needed

Upper body strength exercises.

I know that there's a special place in Hell for me...

OP, best to you and your better half. Hope she has a full recovery or total control. Again, best to you and yours.

Re: recommendation needed

I actually own a universal M1 Carbine. I know, I know, not real 'Merican but I picked it up for 200 bucks this year and it came with 6 mags. You can reach out and touch someone at 300 yds, but past that its a little like lobbing rocks from across the pond. It's an awesome gun though. Hornady even makes "match" rounds for it now.

Re: recommendation needed

What is she using now and what is your budget? I can't think of many rifle caliber carbines that would be much lighter than an AR.

-14.5" LW profile barrel
-9"-11" Noveske NSR rail
-Standard M4 recievers
-MOE furniture
-No BUIS
-Aimpoint T/H1 with Daniel Defense mount

This would make a very lightweight yet still reliable AR. IMHO many people sacrifice reliability in an effort to cut weight. Items such as low mass carriers belong on comp guns, not "battle" rifles/carbines. Of course everyone has there preference, but I believe reliability comes first.

Re: recommendation needed

i think i'd have to agree with the strength training, but that seems to be an issue you can't overcome. if having weight forward is the issue, look at other bullpups.
FN's FS2000 is a great alternative to the PS90. it uses STANAG magazines (cheap, light, plentiful), fires a 5.56 nato (which is way easier to find than 5.7x28), can accept any optics that the ARs can (or your current optic) and it looks like something out of Judge Dredd!
another option in the bullpup line is an AUG. i've heard lots of negatives about the MSAR clone, but the Steyr is a great gun. however, it does NOT accept STANAG magazines to the best of my knowledge.
the M1 Carbine is an awesome and nostalgic gun. i'd avoid one with a paratrooper side-folding stock though, there's no such thing as a cheekweld on that wire stock. the solid wood stocked guns are nice, VERY low recoil (for quicker followup shots, not that she's recoil sensitive, you've already stated otherwise)

or, if AK's are an option, look for a bullpup AK. 47, 74, either one would be just fine.
