Looking to upgrade my stock and have found either one of these listed, I cant really find much info on either besides the LTR is lighter than the 700"P" version because its shorter and has a hollow butt? The VSF is a total mystery to me besides I believe it was used for the varmint rifles..... cant tell by the pics but are they the same stock? The LTR has the aluminum bedding block so I'm gonna assume the VSF does as well.
This will be going on a 700sps tactical with the dreaded Hogue,
just wanted a little info on both stocks maybe pro's and con's if any, but if they are the same than nothing really to tell.... I guess.
Thanks in advance

Re: HS precision VSF or LTR?

The HS LTR and VSF both have the aluminum bedding block. The LTR is shorter and has a narrow fore end. It works great with the shorter 20" bbl for handling and shooting prone and off-hand. The VSF has a wider fore end for shooting off bags.

I dropped my SPS-tac into an LTR, and with a Vortex HS scope it only weighs 9.25 lbs.

Re: HS precision VSF or LTR?

From what I have been looking at, HS precision still makes the stock like the vsf, the PSS or PSV. I cannot find one like the LTR (LTR stock?) , maybe not made anymore?
How do you like the smaller stock? I was leaning more towards the LTR as its the lighter of the two.

Re: HS precision VSF or LTR?

I got rid of the LTR stock right after I bought the rifle, it just didn't feel good to me...never could get comfy with it. I sure didn't have any trouble selling it though, they seem to be in demand. Replaced it with a B&C. My VSSF has an HS Pres. stock that I believe is the same as the VSF stock and I really like it, a good solid stock and very comfortable for me.

okie

Re: HS precision VSF or LTR?

Right now those are the 2 stocks I'm trying to decide on, a new B&C would be nice but can't afford that much right at the moment, $250'ish is where I'm at and that's about the price for either one of those. The hogue stock that's on it seems comfortable to me size and fit wise but it's as everyone know... flimsey
Im not sure if I would like the feel of the LTR but I have nothing to compare to, guess I could get it and if I don't like it, sell it..... Got a few more posts before I can advertise anything here. I have the 20" barrel with the bull barrel contore, bull or varmit, not sure which

Re: HS precision VSF or LTR?

Guess I could get a new B&C M40 for that price though...... decisions, decisions
why does the used HS precision stocks cost more than a new B&C?
also, wonder what the weight differences are

Re: HS precision VSF or LTR?

I really like the B&C Medalist series stocks. I've got the Tactical on my LTR, been on it for years and always liked it. Been thinkin about makin it into a hunting rig lately though, if I do that, I'll be putting an M40 on it.

okie

Re: HS precision VSF or LTR?

I seem to be almost the only one talking in this thread but I have one quick question,
My 700 sps aac-sd has a good sized barrel, will it drop into the HS precision VSF, or will I need to get work done? I am assuming that since its a varmint contour it should work but my guesstimations have been off before.....
if you cant tell, im leaning towards the VSF, just afraid I wont like the LTR
also from the info provided by stockey, the VSF weighs the same as the LTR @ 2.5lbs or a 40oz'r for all you drunkards

Re: HS precision VSF or LTR?

I bought a lefty, Rem 700 VSF in .308 Win back in 2005. A few years ago I replaced the VSF with a Manners MCS T5A when they were offered in a group buy. The VSF was a decent stock. Had a varmint contour barrel (0.82" at the muzzle) that fit fine in the stock. There was a palm swell on the grip which felt great at the gun dealer's, but after shooting it a while, I decided I prefer a slimmer grip on the gun.

Yes, it has an aluminum bedding block. Many suggest to skim bed this. I never did (nothing against skim bedding; just didn't want to spend the money and had doubts about my own skills in the regard).

Okie, did you have any discomfort with the palm swell like natty bumpo?
also, I was just really referring to how much I just keep going on about this, wasnt hackin on anybody that was replying to my Q's

Yes, it's a drop in fit. Varmemt contour of the VSF/VLS and the LTR, PSS, SPS-T, AAC-SD, 5R and other factory Remington tacticals are all the same. If you buy another take off HS Precisions stock or order a new one someplace and it says Rem Varment contour you're good to go. The VSF stock is an alright stock just like and just a little longer than the LTR. I like the LTR, PSS and 5R stocks, none weight a lot by any means. They all offer little differences. The PSS has a large palm swell area and nice fore arm but it's nto everyones cup of tea because if the larger palm area, The LTR, VSF & 5R butt and palm swell areas are all but the same. From that point forward you have 3 totally different stocks. The VSF isn't as wide in the for arm area, the LTR is trimmed down even more & smaller in the fore arm and the 5R has a wider well though out fore arm that seems to be a good mix of not being to wide but still will ride in bags ok and handle well shooting off hand.

I got a bit off topic I guess. The LTR is a nice compact factory package and the VSF with it's 26" barrel is a bit long for some folks. Both are 1-12" twist. If you buy the LTR and dont like the stock off load it and pick up a McM, Manners, another HS in different style, or go the less expensive options out there.

Re: HS precision VSF or LTR?

might just say F it and go the M24 route
I think I have looked over most of the HS line, is the 5R the same as the XCR? the link I posted above says it comes on the 700XCR (wich I thought came with a B&C) and I have found some 5R stocks for sale. seems the people over at AR15.com dont favor them so well

Re: HS precision VSF or LTR?

Yeah the 5R & XCR stocks are differnt. Best bet if you can or have a decent dealer around is go and handle what you can and decide. We all like different things and preferences. Me, I like the LTR, PSS/M24 & 5R stocks but that's just me.

If the budget allowed a bit more my go to is McMillan either HGT or A5. After that it's a big step chassis which is another ball game of selection and wide price range.

Re: HS precision VSF or LTR?

Re-cap
got the 5R stock
