Pardon my ignorance. I am moving to the San Jose area for 6 months beginning Oct 16. I would like to bring a handgun with me, but am unsure if temporary residents are required to register handguns.

Are there any of you CA folks that know the answer to this question?

Re: Temporary move to CA

I'm pretty sure you are screwed as far as carry but not possession.

Condolences on your temporary relocation to kommiefornia.

Here is where I looked for info when I was visiting family in that hell hole.

CA is not as bad as people claim. I'm 23 and a CCW holder. It wasn't hard in the least to get that permit. However, with handguns, you have to have a handgun that has been approved on the DoJ list when it comes to importing them into the state.

Wrong wrong wrong. CA is about the worst state in the country as far as gun laws.

The safe handgun roster refers to handguns sold by FFLs in the state, individuals are perfectly able to bring in non rostered handguns into the state, when they initially make the move, otherwise it is considered importing and thus illegal. Other legal paths that bypass the roster is by having immediate family, spouse, siblings, parents, gift you the handgun, although it has to be sent to an FFL, you then have to pay the $35 for the DROS, wait 10 days and pay a transfer fee in addition to the DROS, which will vary from FFL to FFL, I've seen them as high as $145.

Additionally, getting a carry permit will vary county to county, some counties in CA are truly shall issue, others, like L.A. its not happening, period. There is almost 10 million people living in this county and Sheriff Baca has only issued roughly 200 permits, you basically have to give 25K to his reelection fund to even be considered. LEO are also exempt from the Roster, so they can buy any pistols they want, and, at the moment anyways, able to then sell them to the general public at a later time.

Add in the magazine restrictions, bullet buttons, no NFA, lead free hunting zones, the retarded AWB and a number of other insane laws that make this state near unbearable.

OP: if your pistol has magazines that are greater than 10 rounds you cannot bring them into the state assembled, you can disassemble them to bring them in, but you cant put them back together again while in the state. Also you will have a time period in which to "voluntarily" register the pistol with the state, the form is online and involves a fee along with it, $19 if I remember correctly.

When in doubt, head over to Calguns, while they have their fair share of idiots on the board, there is a huge wealth of CA specific gun info regarding the laws in the state.
