Best Battle Style AR-15

Hey guys

I had a Noveske N4 16 inch, and ended up selling it a while back. Wanting to get another AR 15, I am trying to decide between the JP SCR-11 and LaRue PredatAR. Just for advice, for a home defense, battle style rifle, with range use, probably never more than 1000 yards, which would be the better pick? From what I've read they're neck and neck. Also is there any other reason to go with a 7.62 other than longer range?

Thanks!

This tells me all I need to know about how much you know. Go to your local newstand and buy all the gun magazines you see. Probably cost you maybe 40-50 bucks depending on how well stocked your local grocery store is.

Read them all, and then come back. It'll be the best firearms investment you ever make.

Well, you've already owned the two best 1000 yard ARs on the planet...so...

Re: Best Battle Style AR-15

Guess I should have reworded my question, just trying to find more information on how JP compares to Larue and Noveske.

Thanks for the input so far!

1000 yards?

You must have a really big house ^5

I think he typed an extra 0 and meant 100 yards

Re: Best Battle Style AR-15

Taking account I was infantry when infantry walked I'd go light.

If I was to pick the perfect rifle for "battle" (something I'll never see again) it would be a M16A1 with a 1:7 twist barrel and the A2's rear sight.

Weight would have to be the same as the orginal M16A1. I'd even go back to the M7 bayonet. The M9 is nice but too heavy. I know for a fact I can dig a pretty nice hole pretty damn quick with the M7.

I think the "go buy magazines" comment was based on the the stated desire for a "battle style rifle" then talking about shooting to 1,000 yards . . . and possibly that the JP and LaRue are not your typical battle-style rifles.

A battle style rifle would typically have a chrome lined barrel with FSB. Something like a chrome lined, FSBed Colt, BCM, LMT, Daniel Defense, Noveske and others. They will last a LONG time and be sufficiently accurate and durable for "battle" or the range.

If you really want and plan to shoot to 1,000, I think pretty much everyone will tell you to go with a larger caliber. In the smaller frame, 264/6.5 could work. In larger frame, take your pick of caliber . . . LMT MWS, GAP-10, LaRue, JP and others are all options with some being more or less of a battle style rifle.

If I was getting back into ARs, as you are, I would buy another chrome lined Noveske. They are a great balance of accuracy and durability. Look for jakhamr81 in the group buy section for a "Noveske Group Buy" thread if you're interested.

Re: Best Battle Style AR-15

One more thing, if those are really your only two considerations . . . The LaRue would probably be considered more of a battle rifle.

Re: Best Battle Style AR-15

Let me know where you are located - I'd love to put my cobbled together in the basement from blem parts AR up against your wonder wand, whatever letters and numbers it ends up with on its side.

Why did you sell your Noveske?

Re: Best Battle Style AR-15

It all depends on what your budget and skill level is at.

I just got done with a new student and his new M&P-15. It's the base model with the Magpul rear sight and regular handguards. At the end of our session both he and his wife were tearing the center out of a seven yard target. This is perfectly adequate for "home defense". The rifle ran and didn't have a single malfunction.

However last month I was at a writers conference where JP rifles were supplied. It's like comparing a scalpel to a cleaver. I came away incredibly impressed with how fast and easy the JP rifles are to shoot. It's no wonder you see them all over the 3-Gun games.

Finally, 1000 yards is extremely optimistic for an AR15. It requires that you setup the rifle in a manner that would put you at a great disadvantage in a home defense situation.

I recommend the VTAC edition of the M&P 15......if you want 1000 yard AR-15, let me know if you find it. The high end LaRue's will get you Designated Marksman quality between 600-800, but beyond that you have to be really good, IMHO.

Re: Best Battle Style AR-15

I just got me a Knights SR-15 and love it. For me a battle rifle type AR has a chrome lined barrel, is light, has a 16" barrel. I would never expect to shoot it past 600 to 800 yards and if I can hit a zombie anywhere at that distance I'm happy.

For home defense, CQB style fighting, 16" for sure. 1:8 twist as well for the heavy bullets.

Re: Best Battle Style AR-15

Had a couple of M&P AR's, they ran fine, had really decent riggers, no problem rifles. JPs are on like a totally different level, cost twice as much. Good barrels, good triggers, finished like jewelry.

Obligatory porn.

Now if you are talking .308 rifles, I've got my flame suit on, here's my pick. My pick for optic is a USO SN-4 w EREK. Weighs a lot less than my LMT, shoots softly, 1" rifle, completely .mil.

Is that the Gen 1 or Gen 2 VTAC?

Re: Best Battle Style AR-15

Noveske skinny MOE, everything you need an nothing you don't. Not sure why you sold your Noveske in the first place. JP and Larue are nice guns, but not the direction I'd look for a HD gun. Look into Noveske, Colt, BCM, DD, LMT.

LOL

I ran into a geezer at a gun show who was talking about how soldiers today are pussies and that when HE was in the Army 'men were men' sort of thing. I asked if he was in the 'big one,' he said yes, I then asked 'Union or Confederate'.

Haha, Gold.

Re: Best Battle Style AR-15

For a 'battle style' rifle, between those 2 I'd most likely go Larue- but my JP ain't for sale and would do just fine for your use. Whichever you choose will work better than fine.

Re: Best Battle Style AR-15

Colt 6920 or 6940 and let her eat. They are of course where all others originated.
