If this is Political please remove it, it is only meant to show the state of our nation and its direction at this time.

Here are a few headlines from recent national publications.

Where will we go from here?

Again, this is only to show where we are as a society, a whole of it parts.

Re: American tolerance

Pretty damn sad when you think about it and I fear it will get worse before it gets any better!

Re: American tolerance

This is just the beginning. All the things that I thought growing up were right have now turned to being wrong. And, what I mean by that is common sense is not so common anymore and the term "Political Correctness" actually means anything but that.

Re: American tolerance

Diversity is great stuff, but I think is the result of the influx of TOO MUCH diversity, too quickly. At one point there was a national identity. Now there seems nothing but opposition groups fighting for their own little piece of real estate. But thats been the case throughout history. Til we find at least ONE THING that we can all agree on, it will remain pretty much the same.

On the other hand I can name several that are just as wrong in the other direction, but wont because that would definately push it into either political or religous ....I dont like the hammer.

Re: American tolerance

personally I don'give a damn about the religions, BUT : as the muslims arrived in the (mostly catholic) italy, beside being allowed to have their churchs or whathever are called to pray and/or reunite, often even builded or given in use thank to the economical assistence of wealthy italian business groups, they started a complaint about the removal of the crucifixes from the italian public schools ,frequented by their sons _ that's the trend _

So then, how did we manage to survive the other periods of immigration in the past? Minnesota absorbed a million Swedes, to no ill effect. The country, as a whole, absorbed another two million Scots-Irish, and well over five times that of the Irish. What's different now?

Re: American tolerance

Sounds to me some self-proclaimed great civilizations will come crying to once thought to be barbarians about new age barbarians overrunning them...

Tables have turned a bit i'm afraid and for me problems from the first post are only symptoms of something larger (dying society) as focusing on one religion and its demise can narrow ones vision of the "forest".

Re: American tolerance

I'll still remain optimistic. Pretty much all you can do other than bitch and moan about it.

Because those people who came here wanted to have the life that was America. Now people leave their home countries, come here and refuse to assimilate. Instead they want to turn America into the shit hole they just left. There is a huge difference.

Re: American tolerance

New York managed to absorb many waves from many nations, and even managed to do it long before "diversity" and "tolerance" became college minors.

What we have now is not tolerance and diversity, it is the intolerant tyranny of the minority.

...and in other news.

Re: American tolerance

Our local school board just passed a motion saying that the reciting the Pledge of Allegiance before meetings is to be done "on people's own time" before the meeting begins. It will not be recorded in the minutes and will not be part of the meeting itself.

This charlie-fox of counter-patriotic political correctness was propogated by a bunch of flatlanders who moved here from 'away' because they wanted what we had to offer in our town, not what was common to their urban sh*tholes. You know, safety, values, community, neighbors, etc.

I will stop now before unleashing a string of unexpurgated invective that will get me banned in perpetuity.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: American tolerance

We did have waves of immigrants in our past, and there were issues with them. Anti-Chinese, Anti-Irish, etc movements brought aggression and segregation into their lives. We forced native languages out of their children in our schools, and over time they became the "normal" American. Fear of the Irish diluting our culture or stealing our daughters faded.

I think however, that during the civil rights movement, more political attention was drawn to the rights of US citizens and non-citizens. Politicians and lawyers could now make a living off of granting equal rights to those treated unfairly.

I think that over time, this grew into big business/political platforms, and after the major inequalities were addressed in the 60s and 70s, those now making money or power from the system of civil rights were forced to fight more specific and much smaller issues. Such as taking God off of the wall in X small town courthouse because Y person was offended.

My interpretation of this is that more people are depending on the system to make money, which breeds stupider fights.

Making it worse is the fact that people are no longer part of a community of neighbors that HELP and KNOW each other, now these people no longer know their neighbor and have no qualms screwing their community to advance their own ideals. Lawyers wanting to make money off of these fights are thus supported by masses of people no longer a part of their community.

Maybe I am wrong..

We do have a lot of infrastructure to rebuild I'm told: Crumbling roads and bridges and then there is all that high speed rail we supposedly need...
