Great! I got an SPS Tactical for my son, changed the stock to a B&C Medalist, added a Bushnell 3200 Tactical scope on a 30 MOA base and I have shot it out to 1165 sucessfully. Told the kid it was his when he graduated from A school, which he did. He gradutes from bubblehead school a week from Friday and we may be there together on the 13th for the Head Hunter.

Wade any word on a November schedule, if any? Got a Cincy crew looking for another trip, and it seems like then may be the only time all of our schedules coincide. I know John was there a week ago desparate to get his 284 to a mile, but that lucky loser is in Columbus all the time for business anyway!

My work schedule changed so I won't be making the open range day this Saturday. Too bad because I just bought a Millett TRS-1 and some Fed 175gr Gold Medal match ammo.

I live just south of Butler Pa. I have not made it out to TV yet but I am looking VERY forward to getting out there. I would like to work out maybe a split the gas situation with anyone from the Pgh. area. I roll in a 99' Chev " Frankentruck" with a Vortec 454. So as you can well guess it is a BIT THURSTY to say the least. I am new to the LR shooting but my equipment is sound. Respond here or drop me a PM .......Thank's.....Rick

U might want to hold off till summer. Went today and Tom was a no show, only 3 people showed for the match. And no one to run it.

Last months HH Tom was a no show for that as well and we just ran the match our self.

It would be nice if he posted if he is going to be there. One guy drove 3 hours just for the match. For pissed and left.

Last month at rayners there was 40 shooters.

Not to be picky but there were 55 separate shooters with some shooting both days which I think made about 62 entries at last months match at Rayners.

im not the only one thinking this, every time i have been to TVP or other places i hear the talk..

im putting it here hopefully so others who feel as i do will speak up to and say something or come up with ideas to help TVP..


i like tom, i have nothing against him, i like shooing there, ive heard people bad mouth him, but im the type that dont really care unless it effects me..

its effected me 2 times now..

i would like to see bigger turn outs when i come to a match... but there is a reason why turn out keeps getting lower...


and i would like to see those things change before its to late

I have shot there when only 3 of us showed up. Had just as much fun as any other time. Do you really need some one running the show when there are only 3 shooters? My guess is the low turn out had more to do with with the time of year, and it being deer season for most.

This statement is a mute point. 65-70% of the shooters you speak of are either too old, physically incapable of walking the coarse at TVP because of being out of shape, or can't shoot fast enough to even get through half the targets at each stage at TVP.

The comparisons of the two coarse of fire are not fair to either range. Tom Rayner and Tom Sarver are good guys that do everything they can for their shooters. At no fault of Tom Rayner his competition has turned into a bench rest competition with some guys taking 5min+ per shot. He has guys that drive between target stages because they can't walk the stages and I think that is great so everyone can enjoy the sport but that also keeps ones heart rate down and everything is a low stress shooting experience. This is great for new shooters or guys that can't take alot of stress. I love going there because there is alot of joking around and I for one try not to be too serious on my days off.

TVP is quite different. Sarver's courses are higher stress per design. Some people talk of buck fever when hunting well in combat you learn to calm it as much as possible but it's always there. Tom tries to re-create that as much as possible. Also shooting there MAKES you become a spotter and frankly that's a big reason I don't shoot there as much because some of the guys I shoot with need more time and help learning to spot or don't have the equipment to properly spot. Once you shoot the coarse once you'll understand what I'm saying. I prefer to shoot at Toms when he doesn't allow anyone to drive the coarse. Separates the men from the boys when shooting and makes it a lot more realistic, but when you do that alot of the shooters I spoke about at Rayners couldn't compete because of age, medical reasons, or being out of shape. So it's kind of a catch 22.

Also you're looking at matches EVERY weekend vs matches once a month as far as long range shooting is concerned. And everyone is entitled to a day off. People get sick and crap happens.

I'm thankful we have both of these ranges in the state. Even though they are on the other side of the state I do everything I can to make it to both ranges as much as possible.

true, vary different crowds at Rayner's, much more "old guy hunter" but from what i saw but would say it was close to 50% split from them to tac shooters...

1 of the funny comments i heard was a guy looking at my buddys sako that had a spur and a S&B and commented on what a cheep/crappy mount it looked like.. :|

listening to the "spotters" call shots was fun as well... things heard like "ya... it landed a tad over the targets right side, your left.."

there were plenty of younger guys there that shot from a bench and that didnt need to, and shooting from a bench does nothing but tech you bad habits..

but in the last 2 years of going to TVP, i have seen 1 guy walk the course, everyone else drives it...

Obviuosly this guy does not know what real equipment looks like !

Every time I have shot either the intimidator or the HH if the group walked the course the course would not have been finished or it would have been really late...also if you have a decent group shooting your heart rate is at resting b/c you have waited so long for your turn!
Also people are there to shoot not hike! I have a pretty physical occupation so I stay in decent shape but I am glad you can load up and move from pt A to pt B. I am one of the guys that usually drives and my truck is FULL.

There is no doubt that TVP is going thru some growing pains. I know what its like to be busy 24-7 and NEVER get a chance to get away and its good and BAD. I live about 2 hrs away. before I leave I make dam sure what the schedule and if it changes then you shoot anyway!

Well, at least now we know how ya all feel about us. No problem but I've shot at TVP and with a pistol and only got 3rd but it was the short course and two targets I never found with my piddly cheap pistol scope in the weeds and yes I did walk the course. There was not a word said about match types from me, only the amount of shooters present. When you're pushing sixty we'll see how you run up and down the hills. The matches weren't designed for the guns we usually shoot but with us now shooting rifles we've been wanting to try the TVP matches for a new challenge but just haven't made it out there yet.

As for spotting, we understand our calls to each other due to being old time varmint hunters and learning that way but we can also call in moa or mil when it's needed. We'll try to not get anxious and want to help spot when it's not needed or wanted next time. There is another squad that will make your calls in moa/mil so you won't need to decipher the call when we say how far off the plate you are with the miss.

I've only shot 4 long range matches with a rifle and all others with a LR pistol and I feel that might be enough of a handicap it allows me to use a bench. Since it was my post that was quoted and I'm assuming some of this must be directed at me. I shot right beside you Ring and I got my shots off as quickly as you and was ready when it was my turn to shoot. I've also heard from other prone shooters that they feel more comfortable and have a more stable position to shoot from than wooden benches that wiggle and move.

Some do take longer but the match is pretty informal so Tom really don't push the issue unless it really gets out of hand. Just because some of us don't enjoy the prone positions don't mean we can't shoot decent from there. Lots of shooters and types of matches out there and we need to support them all so we don't end up with no where to shoot.

Not sure who made the comment about the equipment, we tend to ignore most of those conversations since we've never had nice stuff but do like to see nice equipment to see if there is anything that might help gain a few targets. There are shooters there from very novice with a basic hunting rifle to shooters with their rigs costing $10,000.00. Sometimes it's cool to hear a comment about something being junk, cheap or not even being worthy of bringing it to a match but if it works and gets the job done then it makes it all the better when you can just grin as they walk away. Ya got to be able to cut the non informed some slack.

TVP is going through some growing pains with Tom now doing much more direct gunsmithing and is also working to improve and increase his retail operation. He also has been very good at keeping something going every weekend.

I really like the open range days better than matches and he is now holding them a bit more often. They are generally well attended.

Most of the matches are informal with no prizes except bragging rights and having a small group matches is for me a desirable opportunity. Having complete access to his entire range with a small group of generally helpful shooters is a great way to learn about long range shooting.

Being in a group of half a dozen people and basically having control of all of the ranges at TVP for the day is an opportunity that is well worth the $20 or $30 match fee and in my opinion is one of the best values around. For instance it costs $20/hour to shoot at an indoor pistol range near my home and $15/hour to shoot at a very nice 250 yard rifle range.

Twenty bucks for a match even with only 3 other people sounds like a good deal to me, and I get to use the benches, Intimidator point 1 , head hunter point one and a short course position up the hill for the rest of the day once the match is over.

right... each place has a different crowd.. and quirks... i like both places... i like the way rayners is run for the match... some of the targets impact areas could be a tad better, the 1k mostly, to much brush to spot impacts.. but all in all. i liked what i saw...

i REALY wanted to come to the sniper match, but it filled before i found a partner... im done for the season now.. so time to load and and build new guns... but ill be back in the spring...

and hope to bring a few more shooters with me... to both places...

i have been to TVP two times so far and never to rainers but plan on making it out soon. all i have to say is that we should all be rather thankful to have these places to go and enjoy what we do. out here in PA there is pretty much NOTHING like either of these ranges. you gotta hike a mile or two into the brush to find a decent shot beyond 500yds, so i will continue to drive the 3 hrs to either range.

as far as equipment goes, i dont care if you show up with a damn bb gun. if you can shoot it have at it man.if you want to learn how to shoot it im sure someone will help you. the more people that show up at these ranges the more money they make and essentially the more improvments they can make in the future to continue giving us a great place to go shoot. thats what we are all here to do in the end right? just have a good time, learn and get better at what we do.

Tom Sarver is a great guy and has helped me alot answering any and every question i have ever had for him. he didnt shoot in the intimidator i went to. but i had a great time and met some very helpful people.(thanks again Nito). i also believe that toms rifles that he builds are second to none, i can only hope to have the funds to own one some day.

For the last week Tom has been in Wyoming hunting and for the last month I have been working 7 days a week/10 hour days, and on vacation out of the country. There were RO's scheduled to be at the range for the matches. Whether they were late or didn't show up was out of TVP's control.

I'm going to make either the Oct 20th or the Oct 28th open range day. Crossing my fingers for good weather. I mounted my Millett TRS and zeroed it, it's better than the Bushnell 3200 Elite I had before.

Anyone planning on shooting the intimidator the 27th? As well, is anyone going to camp? I was there last weekend and I can't afford to do the hotel thing again for two nights. I would like to make it up again tho. I just need someone to sit around the fire with.

I'm thinking about it.....at least camping over Saturday night since I live close enough that I can drive over Sat morning.

Good to see a productive thread again.

Stinking things up with who's range is better really looks like crap, you folks in Ohio really dont realize how lucky you have it. Theres alot of maintenance and relying on volunteers to make this happen and some days it just doesn't work out as planned. We end up making the 20 hour round trip to have the opportunity to shoot there, and we will continue because its well worth the trip.

So keep up the good work, all of the good ranges that allow one the chance to shoot and excel.

I agree, I havent been out in over a year and im itching to use a new load on the ar-10, is there anything happening in november or december?
