Hey guys,

Im wondering what 308 factory ammo is the most accurate. I've been looking at Hornady Match 178 gr A-Max's and Federal Gold Medal Match 175 gr SMK's.

P.S. I'll be shooting them out of a 26" barrel with a 1:12" twist.

Thanks

Re: 308 Factory Ammo

I'm not so concerned with paper-punching accuracy.. I'm worried about down-range performance, high BC, staying super-sonic the longest, etc.

With a 26" 12 twist BBL I'd probably try both and then realize launching the 155 scenars at close to 3000fps will be for the win.

Re: 308 Factory Ammo

I also would like the best accuracy I can get. How well would those 155's go through the transonic range?

I plan on stretching my gun out quite a bit.

Re: 308 Factory Ammo

155 Scenars are pretty bad ass. 175 SMK's are my favorite, but the 155 Scenar comes in right behind it. You will ring the dong at a grand with either pretty well.

My advice is to try a box or two of each and make a decision. Shooting just like everything else, it has nitches. You will get 5 guys that like 178 Amaxes, 7 guys who like this and that.

And by the way, my 308 factory ammo is the most accurate.

Re: 308 Factory Ammo

Which company loads with the 155 Scenar?

Also, how much would shipping be from you to order a couple boxes of ammo? I live in New York.

Re: 308 Factory Ammo

We load them.

Shipping depends where in the state. It could be around $19 for 200 rounds or $24 for 200 rounds.

Re: 308 Factory Ammo

+1 on what Zach said. I bought some ammo from him a few weeks ago. I got some smk's, vld's and scenar's. your rig will shoot one better than the rest. you just have to shoot several different bullets and weights to find out what she likes best.

And I also agree the Scenar's are Badd Ass

You speak the truth. I'll be ordering some more of your 175smk's very soon.

0.165moa 5 shot group. I believe it was 0.050 without the one flyer.

Great ammo.

Re: 308 Factory Ammo

Thats one hell of a group, which 175 smk ammo is that from SWA. I saw two types on his website.

Re: 308 Factory Ammo

Mike did some reorganizing on the web store, let me take a look.

It's actually the cheaper Winchester brass 175's.

I appreciate it.

Re: 308 Factory Ammo

Bryan Litz also produces some ammunition through applied ballistics with projectiles specifically designed for transonic stability at extended ranges...it won't be cheap though. The real question is what is your limiting factor right now? Your ammunition? Your rifle? Your skillset? Spend money on your weak points not your strengths.

Re: 308 Factory Ammo

Well im trying to find some great factory ammo for my 308 since the prices are so good compared to other calibers. As of now im not reloading for it but Im most likely going to end up doing so. I already reload for my other rifles but since there is so much high quality 308 ammo out there I figured I'd give it a try first before buying another set of dies.

Quick edit, we reload the Scenars for $.74, smk's for $.60

175 smks are no joke, just compress the shit out of powder with heavier loads in thicker case walls....federal cases to be exact

njnicky,

You should fix that post, looks like I said:

"175 smks are no joke, just compress the shit out of powder with heavier loads in thicker case walls....federal cases to be exact".

As a commercial loader, I could get some heat for that. Some people take things incorrectly.

What is the turnaround time for that?</div></div> Well, throughout the last 12 days we have received 9,000 pieces of brass with 12 different people. I will have 9 of the 12 out on Monday and the last 3 on Tuesday. The first order is at about 10 days, but he had some brass I know nothing about so I got some and did some testing before I loaded it last night. The rest are about 8 days and less out my door if I get them out Monday and Tuesday. The brass I received yesterday will be out in 5 days. We are doing pretty good with this so far. The goal is 8 days from arrival to departure. Volume will factor in down the road but right now it should be pretty quick.

Re: 308 Factory Ammo

The SW Ammo factory 155 Scenar ammo shoots very well in all my rifles. It has become my go-to factory load for matches when I don't have time to reload.

And it's a conservative load for hot weather (as found at Rifles Only or the summer CD matches) which also has temp stability and gives good velocities in shorter barrels.

The best I shot was Southwests 175s and FGMM 175s out of a 24 inch barrel out to 1000 yards.

Re: 308 Factory Ammo

Has any chrono'd SW ammo? What kinda variability in velocity is there? I was advised by a well respected precision rifle instructor that he cannot recommend SW Ammo due to inconsistent velocities.

I dont mean to stir the pot but id like to hear ur experiences.

With this same batch of ammo I have shot a 1.8" CTC 5-shot group @ 600y and a 3.5" 3-shot group @ 1025y

I don't know if this is how all the ammo SW puts out shoots since I have only bought one order of 200rnds, but needless to say I have been impressed.</div></div> This was recently posted in another thread.

I've shot about 1000 rounds of SWAmmo with the Federal and Winchester Brass from 100-1000yds. It shoots very well. I've never chroned it, but it always has low vertical dispersion at distance.

Well, I'm not saying he didn't have any issues, but I experienced the exact opposite. I only chronod 5 shots because I was required to at my range to shoot at 1000yds. I don't know much about standard deviance, but apparently the 16 I got (if I recall correctly) was pretty impressive. I actually got the same number twice out of the five shots. All were very close.

I actually didn't know that was good, but one of the hot shots at the range had to look my paperwork over and he was very impressed with that number. He said the best factory ammo he's ever seen had like a 25.

I was all like,...not anymore bee-otch.

</div></div> Wish he would have let me know. Just like every other ammo company, we cant do it perfect every time. I would have sent another batch to try.

I also hope he was not comparing my run and gun 308 we use to load. The mixed LC LR cases can be an issue.

I am editing this because this sounds like I am being an ass.

I am a little backed up on the reloads, we are at 19 days from arrival to us.

I do however have everything re-sized, trimmed, and cleaned, I just need to load them and I will start shipping them today and tomorrow.

Thanks,
