Here is my newly completely .308 that Russell at Scout Supply Company built for me. This was originally a AAC-SD model. I wanted a bit shorter and thicker barrel so Russell trued up the action, put on an Obermeyer MTU contour 1-10 twist stainless cut to 18.5". The end is threaded 5/8-24 for my suppressor that is on the way. He bedded a HS Precision take-off stock fitted with Badger M5 bottom metal. The trigger is a Timney, set at 2.5 lbs. Badger 20 MOA base, Badger low 30mm rings, and a US Optics SN-3 1.8-10x with 44mm objective.

He even cut the foam out of a Pelican case to fit everything nicely.

This is a group shot at 100 yards with Federal Gold Medal Match 175 grainers.

I messed around yesterday to see how it shot farther out. The first is a group of 175SMK handloads at 375 yards.

This is the same gong with 5 more shots added from 500 yards with 168 grain amaxs.

I'm still working on finding the best load combination but so far so good! Russell was able to get this done and back to me in about a month. He is great to work with and has been a big help in working with me during load development for my rifles.

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

Excellent rifle! Very well done. What does it weigh in at fully dressed out?

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

I like it!

I don't like the grip area on the HS stock though, gonna take some gettin used to.

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

That's a sweet rifle. How are you liking that USO 1.8-10x?

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

Beautiful rifle that barrel looks like it weighs a ton. Russell is currently building me a rifle to say I am excited would be an understatement.

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

that looks awesome. russell is working on a 308 for me also. should be done anytime now. seeing yours and your groups is getting me a little impatient

I'd guess ~12 lbs.

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

Very nice build..and shooting. Which reamer did he use?

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

I really liked the color scheme on this build and I might be repainting my personal if I can ever find the time.

This rifle turned out really well balanced. I didn't weight it before it left the shop but it wasn't all that heavy. It was going to have a 20" barrel but the just didn't look right with the flutes and the weight was a bit off. So we decided to cut it down and make it a little handier for climbing in the tree stand. Now we just need to get you in the stand instead of on the range... If your 260 is the Pig Slayer then let the Deer Hammer get to work!!

peligro113-- I just got through bedding your rifle and it well be here waiting for you when you get back.

Boydo-- You just got the call up from the minors my man. Your action is in the lathe as we speak and will post some trueing pictures on my facebook page as they come along.

kyyotestalker--It is going to be hard to get yours done with all the parts but the barrel sitting in Kentucky.... I should be ready for them next week or two. Just when you get time send it my way.

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

That's a good looking rifle you've got there! As for 308 loads, I find my shorter 308s like 44.4gr of Varget with the 175 SMKs. That's usually what makes the smallest and most consistent groups for me. YMMV, so test around that area and you should find a good accuracy node.

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

That's a great looking gun, I have one on the way from Russell and after seeing this one I can't wait.

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

I'm not sure exactly on the weight...I don't have any way to weigh it. It doesn't "feel" heavy at all. It is superbly balanced and handles perfectly. I know it's much easier to get into and out of a tree stand with than my 26" heavy-barreled .260!

I really dig the USO scope for those who asked. I think 10x is plenty for deer hunting and it worked fine for shooting at my steel plate at 500 yards. I was most concerned about the low-light performance but it seems to be pretty decent considering the 44mm objective.

The reamer Russell used was a Bisley Palma reamer, .343 neck, and .091 FB...I'm guessing FB is freebore...also the bore on the barrel is a bit tighter than normal at .298 for anyone interested.

Oh, yeah I forgot to mention Russell did a nice job trimming down the front of the scope rail so we could use the lowest rings possible and still fit the scope. I really wanted it down low so I would not need a pad on the stock.

And for all of you waiting on rifles for Russell, get excited! He really does a great job! With that being said, I don't mind at all if this turns into the "Hey Russell! Where is my damn rifle already!" thread!

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

Man,

That is a fine looking rifle and it appears to shoot even better than it looks! Keep the updates coming. Interested to hear what load you settle in on (supersonic and subsonic data).

Aught to be about perfect for anything from deer blinds and mid range matches!

Good choices on the build from SSC.

Josh

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

Great looking rifle that barrel is sweet. One question: does badger now sell bases with the full pic cross slots as pictured here. If so where can i get one very nice. I have only encounterd thier bases with half slots.
thanks

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

Thanks Josh! I haven't had much time to work up any more loads yet but I plan to once the deer season is over. It will shoot about anything well enough to hunt with and the rut is going on here right now so hopefully ill have some pics of a nice buck taken with the new gun soon!

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

very nice shooting shorty, amazing what quality componants put together properly can do.
well worth every penny i am sure.
congrats.

Thanks ZL! I'm going to make a few with your recipe and try them today. Ill let you know how they shoot.

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

Rifle looks great man, and it looks like it shoots just as good. I just talked to Russell and he's going to build me a 260. To say that I'm excited would be an understatement. He sent me this link to check out the color. I like it, especially with the OD green stock. I'm going with that same color but with a AICS chassis. Now get the deer pics up!

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

Well I did finally get a deer but it was not pic worthy...I saw what I thought was a nice sized doe at about 250 yards on Friday. I held over a mil and squeezed and it fell where it stood from a 178 grain Amax to the base of the neck. When I got down and made my way over to the deer I saw it was actually a 90 lb spike buck. I was a bit disappointed to have shot such a young deer but I was very impressed to have it drop dead from 250 yards. I see now that a scope with a bit more magification might be a good idea for longer range shots.
Hopefully his big brother or dad will show up soon!

Thanks for the comments on the gun! Russell does a great job! You will be happy when your gun shows up!

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

Don't feel bad about taking a spike. Get those genetics out of the herd. Spike Study We have a pool at our lease- $50 buy in and pot goes to "best" spike as voted on by lease members. Too many guys have just come out and take a "nice" deer and vanished for the season. The contest is designed to get a bit more interest in herd management.

Oh, nice gun!!

Sorry to hear it, but as the other guy said that it's not bad necessarily. I just got a NF 5.5-22x50 off of a guy. Hopefully that's enough magnification, lol. What did you order?

Oh, and it was the review from here that gave me faith in Russell, lol. Nothing against him it's just hard trusting someone that you have heard nothing about. His price and turn around time is hard to beat right now.

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

if you don't mind me asking what did it set you back? I am in the market for something like this.

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

Well I sort of pieced it together so it's a bit difficult to figure but here goes:
Original rifle-$700
Take off HS stock from 5R Milspec. I used one of another one of my guns but if you had to buy one...Say...$250
Timney trigger $125
Badger base $125
Badger rings bought used from SWFA $100
New obermeyer barrel bought on the hide $400

I sent all this stuff to Russell at SSC along with $1200 and he did all the trueing, fitting, bedding, added Badger M5 bottom metal, badger knob, threaded new barrel, added thread protector, and paint. He also modified my Picatinny rail by cutting the first two sections off and flattening the rear section so I could use the lowest rings possible. He also custom cut the foam in my Pelican case and shipped it back to me at his expense.

I think if you had him build one from a new action it would be cheaper but mine all in except the scope was around $2900. I paid $2000 for the scope lightly used from SWFA. So, just under 5K all-in. It's worth every penny:)

Glad I could provide some good feedback! I didn't order a new scope I meant the deer's big brother or dad, haha!
I think that NF will serve you well! What exactly are the spec on your rifle Russell is building?

Re: My new Scout Supply Co. shorty .308.

He is building the barreled action for me, but the build will consist of:

22" mullerworks barrel (came highly recommended by Greg at bugholes)
Trued action from SSC
Badger bolt knob
Jewell trigger
Same color as you dura coat
SAS T.O.M.B.
SAS arbiter can
AICS chassis
Victor company viperskins
Victor company grippy cheek rest
NF 5.5-22 x 50 (mount undecided)
LaRue 20 moa rail
Undecided on bipod, but leaning towards the Atlas

The rifle will be chambered in 260 Remington. I can't wait to get it all together. The barrel should be to Russell Thursday.

Pretty much they same here. 44.3 gr. Varget under 178 amax or 175 smk

Sweet looking rig!
