New member here. I am starting to build MY first custom gun. I am wanting a 308. I will be hunting and shooting paper for fun out to 600 yds regularly(further when I can) with this gun. I don't mind carrying some extra weight as I carry an LR308B to hunt with now and love it. I have a friend that will be truing the action and installing the barrel. I want a short heavy bbl. I load my own ammo and will be shooting 168 gr Barnes TTSX or SMKs as fast as I can safely. I do not have a bottomless wallet but want my rifle apocalypse dependable.

I need suggestions on barrel makers, tapers, lengths, fluting, twist rate, etc.

I am also looking for a stock. Would like to find something gently used.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: First ground up bolt gun build. Help needed.

What would I do in your situation?

I would get a Badger M2008 Action or R700
18.5" or 20" M40/M24 Contour Barrel (Mike Rock, Krieger, Obermeyer, or Bartlien)
Surefire Overlap Brake w/ thread cap in case you can't legally hunt with the can (because I have the can inbound)
Manners T2A Stock
Badger M5 Bottom Metal
Standard Remington Trigger, or Timney
Badger 20 MOA Base

What remau said but it sounds like you already have the action. I like the heavy palma contour barrels a bit better but the m24 is ok too.

I' do. It will be built on a 700 action. I like that manners stock. Do they have one with a full aluminum bed or just the pillars? Where is the best place to pick one of those up?

Looking at the Manners website, I really like the M4A stock but they don't even offer a block bed. Why is that?

Typically, if you buy a fiberglass stock, you plan to have it bedded. If you don't want to have a gunsmith bed it, then you could buy a stock that doesn't need bedding like an Accuracy International.

Re: First ground up bolt gun build. Help needed.

I like medium or heavy Palma contours. Much better looking and a fair bit lighter weight than standard taper contours.

If you end up with a traditional style stock (McMillan, non-chassis Manners, etc.), you can do the bedding yourself with a jar of Devcon, Kiwi wax, and Play-doh. It's very easy, just a little bit scary the first couple times. If you have a 700 action, though, I would just get the Manners mini-chassis.

Re: First ground up bolt gun build. Help needed.

A "sendero/remington varmint" contour would work just fine. There's a black manners T2 mini chassis for a Rem700 SA and sendero barrel contour ready for shipment at manners right now. Southern precision rifles (aka bugholes) has several Rock 30 cal barrels in that contour for sale right now too.

I think I am going with the Rock Creek barrel rem varmint contour, 10 twist. I spoke with my dad and he has a Remington R5 stock laying around. The price is right on it as you might expect. Is there any reason I shouldn't utilize it? I like the HS PSS stocks a lot.
